Just been a man knocked down on the road near here. Why don’t we do away with cars?
stupid comment.
March 20, 2008 at 18:23 #152920Ive always been an advocate of the Water Jump as it is part of jump racing and for me it is a good spectacle.
It was a nasty fall which sadly took East Tycoons life but it could easily have happened at any other obstacle.
March 20, 2008 at 18:27 #152923It does not help that the Ludlow water jump has a rise immediately after the water.

Johnj: the feeling is mutual. Unsympathetic and unhelpful comments annoy me …
I love horses and I love racing and today has really upset me – I accept that accidents happen at fences, on the flat, on the gallops, in the stable, out at grass etc etc but water jumps are unfair – I thought they had been modified to avoid what happened today …
March 20, 2008 at 18:54 #152938but it could easily have happened at any other obstacle.
That is simply not true. Only by the nature of water jumps can you leave your legs behind in the fashion East Tycoon did.
March 20, 2008 at 19:11 #152945After what I saw happen to East Tycoon today water jumps simply must be done away with. I cannot believe that in this day and age of safety being paramount fences are being dolled off left right and centre due to the risk of low sun on one hand and on the other we are still asking horses to jump something akin to a booby trap.
March 20, 2008 at 19:15 #152948The Wesh Wizard and Davidjohnson:
I so agree!Water jump has recently gone from Haydock but …
How many courses still have water jumps? Ludlow, Newbury, Aintree …March 20, 2008 at 19:17 #152949As a fan of cross country racing, I love water jumps and, personally, see very little wrong with them. However, as someone who is involved with a racing stable, it almost destroys me when something happens to the horses. (I haven’t seen todays incident as I’ve just finished work, but my condolonces go the connections of East Tycoon). Therefore, maybe the best idea would be to find a happy medium, and I think it might be an idea to look at the widest water jump in Europe. This is (contrary to popular belief) not at Auteuil, but at the Waregem course in Belgium. Like Auteuil, their water jump is also right in front of that stands, making for spectacular viewing. However, the water jump at Waregem is only a few inches deep, and the idea is that the horses actually land in the water, then with one stride are out again, because there is no ‘lip’ on the end of the water. Unfortunately, it won’t let me copy the photo, however if you go to

you can see what I mean.

March 20, 2008 at 19:24 #152956That’s a bit different, isn’t it?!
Some great photos on the site.
March 20, 2008 at 19:35 #152957Last years race is actually on You tube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-xMMkJr5zc
and the water jump is about 2 minutes in, just after a nasty looking incident at the bank, however all horses and jockeys were fine (although French jockey Gaeten Toupin was limping around a bit).
You can see how the horses jump in to the water jump, then straight out again, as there is no lip on the exit. Maybe this is the way forward for safer water jumps?

March 20, 2008 at 21:56 #153001When you see Denman leap the water jump at Newbury it is a spectacular sight but when horses do make a mistake it often has serious consequences. Nevada Royale was lucky earlier in the season to escape with his life.
Get rid, sooner the better.

Value Is EverythingMarch 20, 2008 at 22:33 #153016As expected after todays sad event a total over reaction by some.
The water jump is one of the safest jumps on a track, ask any jump jockey whether he’d rather jump a ditch or a water.
Think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of serious mistakes I’ve seen a horse make at water jumps in the last few years, the same can’t be said of other fences.
Water jumps make a fine spectacle at the likes of Aintree, Newbury and formerly Haydock before they ruined the jumps track there, can hardly remember any horse making a mistake at any of them.
As an experienced hunter East Tycoon would have been used to jumping all types of different obstacles but unfortunately accidents do happen. I remember a good horse of Josh Gifford’s, he considered it possibly the best he ever trained Rouble breaking both his front legs at Cheltenham when landing after jumping an obstacle and that was a hurdle race.March 20, 2008 at 22:35 #153017The water jump, though spectacular to watch, didn’t seem to cause too many problems, unlike the bank.
Pretty determined effort from the winner Kan Nejd (incidentally Irish-bred by Indian Ridge), I thought he’d got done on the line. Not the best camera position to judge a finish!
March 20, 2008 at 22:38 #153019Wasn’t his mistake at the water-jump in the Champion Chase in 2005 what effectively finished Azertyuiop?
March 20, 2008 at 22:55 #153025Water jumps are different – they were modified because of horses dragging their legs and suffering badly – some racecourses removed them.
Do agree with the modification, however it really annoy me to hear people give out about horse safety when there are so many dangers to horses when running in NH. Its the sport we follow, and we should have to accept these dangers come with the sport.
JohnJ.
i take it you are just a gambling man, and dont deal with horses..? R.I.P
Thats a bit unfair beckster. I love horses and perhaps I should have just said East Tycoon RIP, I accept that honestly.
However, I just think there are a few toothless comments on this thread, the water jump in Ludlow FFS. How about the third last at cheltenham on the chase course, it was an accident waiting to happen, Willyanwoody came to grief here and Ruby Walsh was nearly killed, this is such a dangerous fence. How about Bechers or the Chair in Aintree equally as dangerous, I don’t here any anybody asking for these fences to be modified or banned? Would anyone go so far?
I do believe there are many dangers in racing, but how far are you going to go to make the sport safe, or do we just accept that there are dangers and live with it….

Not sure maybe it was his trainers decision to go head to head in Sandown with Pipe to win the Championship using Azertyuiop.

I’m sure quite a high profile horse lost his life at Ascot’s water jump some years ago but the name escapes me.Bechers has been modified as a result of incidents there – there were lengthy posts on here re this about that idiotic amateur rider who rode his horse too fast at it – I think it was part of the discussion re Cheltenham’s 3rd last – the ditch was filled in and the landing made less sloping.
Re The Chair – a big fence with a HUGE wide ditch in front – I’m surprised that hasn’t been modified – the fence is much narrower than the others and as a result the runners are funnelled into it – I think more room there would help.
