If you were planning to go to this meeting, take note of this info sent to ROA members today:
GOING TO WARWICK ON NEW YEAR’S EVE?
Please note that Warwick on December 31 – owing to the Grandstand Enclosure selling out – has had to be withdrawn from the Racecourse Badge Scheme for Owners and will no longer be bookable via PASS. A limited number of Centre Course Enclosure tickets are available for ROA members, which must be booked in advance directly with Warwick. To take advantage, email Thomas Williams. Please note, walkups on the day will not be accepted, entry will only be available for those that have prebooked. Not sure how many are allowed in the Grandstand, but I’d have guessed around 5,000, so it’s pretty remarkable that it’s sold out two weeks ahead of the meeting.
December 18, 2023 at 19:45 #1674340New Year’s Eve is on a Sunday this year, which might explain it.
I have been to Warwick on New Year’s Eve three times, twice on weekdays and once on a Saturday. Unsurprisingly, there was a noticeably larger crowd when the date fell on a weekend.
I was not planning on going this year anyway because the trains will not be as frequent on a Sunday but all being well I may try to attend on New Year’s Eve 2024, when it will be a Tuesday.
December 19, 2023 at 11:31 #1674365Just had a look at the official attendance figures and it just seems to be a meeting that has taken off in recent years, regardless of the day of the week.
Up to ten years ago, they’d never attracted even 4,000. The last time it was on a Sunday, in 2017, the crowd was 6,250. The year before that on a Saturday they got 6,550, then last year again a Saturday, it was up to 8,000.
And pre-pandemic in 2019, on a Tuesday, the crowd was 7,700. I can’t imagine Warwick being enjoyable with that many people, given how little space there is between the road behind the stands and the home straight.
December 19, 2023 at 13:42 #1674368I might have to give next year a miss, then. The last time I attended was 2013 when it was a fairly small crowd.
December 19, 2023 at 18:02 #1674378Wouldn’t want to be there on Sunday with that many there.Cheltenham on NYD is bad enough with the invasion of the pram and pushchair brigade
December 31, 2023 at 08:23 #1675839And after all that, the meeting is abandoned (as is Uttoxeter).
December 31, 2023 at 10:38 #1675850No surprise
