A couple of bits of NH history from the 80’s – not great quality as I’ve downloaded them from VHS tapes recorded at the time. Something to pass some time when the racing is mostly off this week.
First, the BBC going overboard on Desert Orchid three weeks after his Gold Cup win:

Second, a profile of John Francome by Hugh McIlvanney, broadcast when Francome retired:

December 6, 2023 at 11:33 #1672878I’ve got some documentaries that I’d love to share with people but being a technophobe I don’t know how to free them from the constraints of being stuck in ancient VHS tapes. One is a lovely documentary about the Dove lineage made before the wonderful Flakey Dove was born and one about Roscoe Harvey.
December 6, 2023 at 13:07 #1672882Moe,
I’m sure if you do a search online, or in your local yellow pages, you’ll find a nearby company offering to convert VHS to Digital – and then ask nicely and promise a good testimonial and I reckon they’ll be willing to load the results onto Youtube.
If you can’t find a local outfit, Asda offer a nationwide service:

December 6, 2023 at 13:56 #1672891Given that they were both on the BBC would I get in trouble with copyright if I put it on utube? Over they years I’ve checked to see if anyone has put it on the internet but no one has.
December 6, 2023 at 19:30 #1672913Moehat, the worst thing that would happen is that the BBC get the video removed. Probably won’t happen.
If you have loads of VHS tapes, might be worth investing in a digital converter.
December 6, 2023 at 19:34 #1672915I think the BBC are only concerned when their blue chip programmes are put on YouTube, which they can still make money from through DVD sales, streaming etc. I doubt they are going to worry much about old racing programmes.
December 6, 2023 at 20:03 #1672919There’s already a fair amount of old racing footage and related content on YouTube. Realistically this stuff is never going to be a money-spinner for anyone now, and the possibility of anyone objecting seems extremely low.
Putting it online might help keep alive some shows that would otherwise be lost for good.
December 6, 2023 at 22:21 #1672933I bought a recorder to transfer the videos onto discs many years ago but could never work out how to use it! And technology has moved on quite a bit since then. Mind you I bet my grandson might be able to show me what to do.
December 9, 2023 at 15:59 #1673280If anyone’s interested I’m happy to transfer old VHS racing tapes (especially old races) to DVD and upload to Youtube for free (provided there’s no copright issues).
I would only need to charge for postage if you required the tape/dvd returned.
....and you've got to look a long way back for anything else.
