This is always a tough nut to crack and there are always hard luck stories, but it’s
the type of race I love.PREDOMINANCE is well fancied, and you can see why. He won in the style of an improving
horse last time out at Haydock and Willie Haggas is a master at preparing one for a big
handicap. He has won this before (Haggas), but that was 20 years ago and I’m not keen
taking single figure odds in a wide open race.OUTBACKER TRAVELLER is another obvious pick after his eye catching run last time out, in
the same race as Predominance, when he looked unlucky. He has shown he handles this 7f by
winning here 2 years back off 93, he runs off 100, and although I don’t think his mark is
that important, the fact he runs carrying more than 9st is a negative. Only 3 horses in the
last 20 years have carried 9st or above. My idea of the winner is FREE CODE. He had a couple of 7f wins at this time last year
and was brought out for a pipe opener in a 6f race at the Craven meeting, where he travelled
well and after squeezing through near the end he finished well for 4th. I think this has been
David Barron’s plan for a long while and he knows how to get one ready for this race, having won
it 10 years ago with Partners In Jazz, who took in the same 6f race at the Craven meeting as FREE
CODE prior to his win. I also like that Rob Hornby takes the ride and takes 3 lbs off his back,
leaving him with a featherweight 8-5. Hornby is a young jockey who I like a lot. 14/1 is a decent
price, with the bonus of a high draw in 24, as that seems to be the favoured side.My other fancy, who I have bet along with FREE CODE, is THE WARRIER. The only down side
for me is that Pricewise has gone for him this morning, and it’s like the kiss of death to me.
Every time my pick coincides with Pricewise it goes down the pan. However not much I can do about
it now as my money is down. He was transferred to Amanda Perrett’s yard from Aiden O’Brien, having
been tried at some decent races but probably not quite living up to their expectations. He is however
a decent looking horse and on his first run for Perratt last time out, he didn’t have the best of runs
from Ryan Moore but finished well when he managed to see daylight late on. I’ve taken him at 33s but
25/1 is still very worth a bet.Plenty of cases could be made for most of the field, but those two have to cope with the
disadvantage of carrying my cash.Good luck all
May 7, 2016 at 10:44 #1244968OUTBACK TRAVELLER 10/1 been moved to a new yard now and his hold up style of racing suit him here
GRAND INSQUITIOR 12/1
Stoute in flying form and this horse won well at Sandown my two here they are
May 7, 2016 at 11:02 #1244970I like predominance.
May 7, 2016 at 12:06 #1244988Good Luck with your picks G !!
I have backed Grand Inquisitor at 12/1 and Flash Fire at 28/1.
I think Flash Fire will improve massively on this ground and Stoute has given GI a run and will love the pace of the race and the stiff finish!!
the other one I was interested in was Mutawathea which is on the same mark (with Ed Greatorex’s allowance as when it was second to Pastoral Player at Goodwood last year but I am not sure about the trip as it has never won over seven furlongs.
May 7, 2016 at 12:08 #1244991This race favours the younger generation 4yo-6yo with only Global Village (7yo) in 2012 bucking that trend in the last 12 runnings. 96 has been the highest winning mark for 10 of the last 11 races (Gabrial’s Lad OR was 102 in 2014) and the winner was rated 9lbs-19lbs lower than the top rated horse in 9 of the last 11 runnings.
The draw doesn’t give much in the way of clues except perhaps to say that the “outer edges” tend to be where the winners come from. In the last 6 races the winner race from…
2015: Stall 23 (of 26)
2014: Stall 25 (of 25)
2013: Stall 13 (of 26) the odd one out
2012: Stall 2 (of 24)
2011: Stall 7 (of 28)
2010: Stall 21 (of 29)Taking the above into account it leaves the following 6…
Red Avenger (stall 27)
Related (stall 1)
Mullionheir (stall 26)
Supersta (stall 20)
Free Code (stall 24)
Mr Bossy Boots (stall 22)Picking winners in handicap fields is more luck than judgement in my opinion, so I am going for one that I think stands a good chance of a place at big odds.
Red Avenger (50/1) has won 4 and finished 2nd 3 times on Good to Firm so likes the ground, but has yet to place in a race at Ascot having run 4 times before. He moved from Ed Dunlop’s yard to Gary Moore so it will be interesting to see if that has made any improvement. Gary Moore puts up a 5lb claimer on board today which effectively brings him down to 5lb below his previous highest winning mark of 96, when winning the BetFred Mile at Goodwood a couple of seasons ago.
Just a small e/w interest for me.
Good luck with your bets !!
May 7, 2016 at 13:22 #1245013I did Grand Inquistor each way at 12/1. He never got a run last time and would have finished a bit closer. I think Stoute’s are improving for their first run and it’s been some of the stable’s best form for a while.
Predominance did well last time and I felt he was value for a bit more, however the Haggas stable has gone off the boil a bit these past couple of weeks and that concerns me.
Outback Traveller is tipped up quite well but I think his chance has been well advertised and the odds are a bit tight. I usually stick to the 10/1 minimum odds rule for these wide open handicaps.
Grand Inquisitor seemed the value.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
May 7, 2016 at 15:38 #1245020Crackerjack dart that Raymo at 28s.
May 7, 2016 at 15:51 #1245022Well done those who got the winner, the other Godolphin horse was stone last after being well backed, absolutely woeful effort.
Grand Inquisitor was just never quite going the pace and he ran well enough dead-heating for fifth. It looked a no-brainer that the horse needs a mile.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

2nd stall 6
3rd stall 2
4th stall 21
5th stall 4
Seems to be something in large handicap fields at Ascot.Would have preferred to see Red Avenger run and lose rather than be scratched – all that wasted analysis ! Pfft !!
Nice darts Raymo !!
