OK i didnt do a report last week from my local track Haydock which i go to a lot so here is brief summary.

Diamond Harry won ok on Chase debut but wont win the RSA Chase,Punjabi wont win the Champion Hurdle and while Our Vic won the Peter Marsh in good style Mon Mome ran a PB and a good trial to defend his Aintree crown.

Yesterday i was all set to go to Doncaster for the Great Yorkshire Chase which is one of my favourite days in the Jumps season, Upon leaving Newton-le-Willows for Manchester my friend Gary text me to say Donc were inspecting at 10.30 so this set me in a quandry as i did not want to get to Doncaster only to go all the way back home straight away.

Having got to Manchester i rang up Doncaster and after many automated messages i spoke to a human so said they were Optimistic, i then rang up Uttoxeter who said Yes even though they had a 10 inspection so i made a choice and decided it was Uttoxeter.

An easy ride down to Stoke on Trent then wait 20 mins for the 15 min ride to the Staffordshire venue was quite easy for once.

Doncaster were charging £15 all in for 7 races which included three Grade 2 races and a Listed Chase, Uttoxeter charged £21 into Premier which inlcuded a Novice Handicap Chase for 0-100, A Conditionals Selling Hurdle and the feature Class 3 Novice Handicap Hurdle.

After paying my money i went to have a spot of lunch which was a nice enough Tuna Sandwich and nice cup of tea which was nice although having the doors open which sent in a slight chill wind was a bit silly but on the plus side having a free Wi-Fi was good to keep in touch on various Racing websites with my iPod touch.

    So to the racing itself.

Race 1 was a Mares Novice Hurdle over 2m in which Nigel Twiston Davies who won the first at Cheltenham at 100-1 won here with Banjaxed Girl at 1-3, always in command she held off the challenge of Arabian Silk who needs one more run for a handicap mark which will be what she needs, Basford Lady from Jennie Candlish was pulled up on debut and their should be more to come from her and will do better on an easier surface.

Race 2 was a Novice Handicap over 2m5f in which 11 set out and only two finished, 11yo Tokpela who had won a P2P kept on in testing conditions after Tanners Court fell at the second last when running a blinder and in turn beat top weight It’s a Discovery from Donald McCains yard, Both arent very good horses and this was their only chance to get some prize money in the owners bank account. The best cheer from the crowd came in this race when Power Shared who fell at the last when very tired got up to his feet after a few minuites rest and galloped up the straight to a nice applause from the crowd.

Race 3 was a Conditionals Selling Hurdle over 2m4f which was low on quality when Calzaghe was declared a non runner and left Foresight the short price favourite but sadly at the fifth flight he broke his front leg and was readily pulled up by Peter Toole who got off but sadly the horse dropped to the floor and died, at the business end Lightning Fire won for jockey Ian Popham after being absent since April, their was no bid for the winner which was not a shock as this was a very poor field

Race 4 was the feature 2m Novice Handicap Hurdle where Karky Schultz finally got a 1 on his form book by making most of the running to win beating Novinov in a thrilling finish with Nomadic Warrior pipping Sweet World on the line for third place.
The winner can improve and possibly pick up a small race again while Sweet World needs to be dropped a few pounds, Novikov in second had a jockey change in Andrew Glassonbury which in turn meant he had 7lbs more to carry because he replaced a conditional.

Race 5 was the Mark Crank Memorial Chase over 2m6f and Pelo de Brief who was carrying hardly any weight recorded his third victory, held up early he took over from Coach Lane at two from home and won very easily in the conditions and had the mare Rosie All Over back in third and these were the only three to finish, This was a real slog and it took some getting.

Race 6 was 2m4f Handicap Hurdle which Zaffarella won making most for Peter Buchanan for boss Lucinda Russell, last ran 70 days ago at Ascot she regained the winning thread and got her second win of the season as she won at Hexham two stars back, A nice enough mare she will probably win again, back in second was Pearl who kept on doggidly with Bret Maverick back in third and in fourth was Glebehall Bay who kept on and may be better going over 3m.

Racing done it was time for another cuppa before getting the 5.07 train back to Stoke before a 10 min wait to get the Manchester train which arrived early which was quite a feat.

A good day out in Staffordshire and although not a winning one it was good to have a back up meeting doing its job when the first choice meet went by the wayside, Uttoxeter also did a nice gesture in letting Doncaster members in free.

Spot on regarding the Peter Marsh being a good trial for Mon Mome & the National.

You make it sound like Uttoxeter is pretty easy to get to from Manchester, I’ll have to keep that in mind next time I think about going racing.
