Fortunately your jaundiced view of the US is clearly not widely shared outside of the barmy left and militant Muslims.
Since WW1 the US have been our staunchest allies and together we saw off the totalitarian right and the totalitarian left, and in the fullness of time will see off the totalitarian Muslim extremists. It is, literally, the sacrifices made by generations of Britains and Americans that means we, and most of Europe, live in reasonably liberal democracies with constantly rising living standards. I take the respect accorded to the US national anthem to be an indication that, deep down, what we owe the US is widely recognised.

Certainly the Russians played a significant role in defeating the Germans. We (the UK and US) then had to defeat communism, now as dead as a doornail (and as, hopefully, Castro and the clown who rules North Korea will soon be).
And no, I take a quite different view of Iraq. A real prospect of establishing a second democracy in the Middle East. The way, long term, to defeat Muslim fundamentalism is the same as that which defeated communism – a combination of standing firm against aggression and individious comparison.

May 29, 2008 at 14:55 #165840Whatever you think of the USA (and I’m with George on that), their national anthem is FAR superior to our dirge. The only shame on the night was the woman who sang it ruined it; she seemed to think that screeching is okay providing you put a bit of a warble or tremor in it. She would never have got into the Beverley Sisters!
