Why is it that certain trainers never seem to get the owners and therefore horses they seem to deserve, whereas other ,imo, less adept individuals seem to be sent a never ending stream of blueblood animals.
Current examples of excellence which could be better rewarded imo include Hughie Morrison and Derek Haydn Jones. Both turn out more than 1 in 3 winners / placed horses to runners.
In the same way it never ceased to amaze me that despite being able to train top notch performers such as Generous, Broken Hearted etc., and also excellent handicappers, Paul Cole never received much patronage from the top arab owners.

4 winners in a week – he’s on fireAugust 10, 2010 at 23:00 #312121It is the old case of who you know and who knows you rather than what you know.

True enough. Mr Cole is very much his own man, says what he thinks, and can sometimes come across as terse to the point of "abruptness" (in the current phrase.) This does not make for a good comms. style fit with the preferred Arab mode of polite submissiveness.
August 11, 2010 at 14:34 #312233Paul Nicholls, imo.

Being a trainer these days seems to be about PR and working relationships with owners. just as much as training ability.
Whilst there are many under rated trainers who dont recieve the backing of big owners, there are also many over rated trainers who continuosly get support of large owners.
Take Brian Meehan for example, Im not going to sit here slating the man, but it is remarkable how many big owners he has relative to his success.
Unfortunately it seems a case of who you know just as much as what you know..
