Has been retired to the paddocks after her run yesterday at Haydock, where she could only finish 5th. (taken from RP)
TURBO LINN, the rags-to-riches filly who went from winning bumpers to Group success on the Flat, has been retired. After coming fifth in Saturday’s Bet365 Lancashire Oaks, her trainer Alan Swinbank said: “She has run her last race, we have retired her.
“She is fine, and she might have won another race, but it’s amazing what she has achieved and basically she has nothing more to prove.
“When you think that she started in bumpers and went on to win Group and Listed races it is incredible. Her owner has a couple of youngsters coming on, and she will go to stud next near.”
Owned by her breeder James Nelson, Turbo Linn was bred to be a jumper being by the handicapper Turbo Speed, who stood at just £500, and out of Linns Heir, who won three bumpers.
She duly started her racing life in bumpers, and under Swinbank’s care won five out of five, including the mares championship at the 2007 Grand National meeting. However, she will be best remember for her exploits last Flat season, when after winning a maiden at Catterick, she romped home in the Group 2 HBLB Lancashire Oaks, a racethat was run at Newmarket after the Haydock meeting fell to waterlogging.
Ten days later she won Newmarket’s Plantation Stakes and although she failed to win again she was one of the leading older staying fillies of 2007.
“She was a fantastic mare,” added Swinbank.
Turbo Linn, won her first eight races, and in total earned connections win and place prizemoney totalling £86,221
Not bad for a mare that was to go hurdling, lets hope she produces a Grp 1 or Champion hurdle winner
July 6, 2008 at 18:14 #172004A great rags-to-riches story. A Group 2 winner, she won eight of her twelve starts and over £86,000 in prize money.
Not bad for a mare who was far from impeccably bred. Turbo Speed was just a useful handicapper on the flat and Linns Heir won three of only five starts in bumper contests.
She won a fairly average Group 2, but you can’t take anything away from Turbo Linn or her connections, who handled her very well.
I’m sure she’ll produce a few winners under both codes.
