Thank you for your entries dear forumites, but please take note that this is some extra office work.
There is still a bit of time left for your answers – Friday 9:00 p.m.

    Mine will be quite detailed….

I look forward to it Ruby.

What appeared to start out as just a bit of fun has remained so but has also become fascinating to hear more about the people behind the (mostly) anonymous usernames and avatars.

It’s become everything I hoped it would be.

    And more tbh.

I aimed for a fiendish quiz, plus an intriguing insight into both all of our lives and our respective propensities to tell a creative lie.

    I have not been disappointed!

Yes I like the seemingly unwritten rule that the lies have a basis in truth. That’s probably why it’s hard to work out.

Has anything in ERL’s posting history mentioned that he definitely has a wife?

It would be a genius move by him if we were all discussing whether or not she had made up some statements, when the lie was that she didn’t even exist!

A very good question, Marlingford and you’ll be surprised how good all of you were. I’ll just have wait until 9:00 p.m. to publish the final result. In case of a tie I’d like to declare the first poster with the same number of correct answers as the winner.

I don’t believe the wife has been mentioned but I was stumped so went with it.

You’d better tell us all Erl, when your wife is going to be on Youtube, “unboxing” and trying on the outfit Ian sent her as a thank you. :rose:

    1. TRUE

My first ever winning bet at the Cheltenham Festival was Montelado winning the 1993 Supreme.

I didn’t know much about racing then and a friend of mine talked me into backing Charlie Swan’s mounts over the three days. He also told me Montelado would be a good thing based on the course experience he gained when winning the Bumper the previous year.

    2. TRUE

The biggest payout in a Tricast Race was the 2007 Champion Chase which netted me almost 3k.

After Voy Por Ustedes won the 2006 Arkle and finished 2nd to Kauto Star in the Tingle Creek, I thought he’d be a good bet for the CC. Instead of having him in win multiples on the day I did a tricast with him to finish first only and added Dempsey, River City, Ashley Brook and Mr. McGoldrick for the 2nd and 3rd place spots. A total of 12 combination bets to a £ 1 stake returned £ 2,929, but also with a lot of luck involved hadn’t Ashley Brook (only a 10/1 shot) fallen at the last.

    3. TRUE

I lost a lot of cash when subscribing to numerous tipster services in the mid 90s.

Terrible decision to listen to other people and pay for their tips. It lasted for about 7-8 years and ended when I cancelled the Henry Rix and Mark Holder subscriptions. They were both quite decent form students and value seekers as well, but you rarely (or never) got the prices they advised and both had a tendency to run into losing sequences. Yes, Rix for instance, advised a 33-1 winner, but I only got 14-1 and the same applied to another16-winner for which I only managed the 9-1 SP. Prior to those years I just rang up „genuine information“ ads picked from the Racing Post. Great stuff really, they managed to put up 3 or 4 horses for the same race and ask you to put either £ 50 or £ 100 for them as well on the horse. I only found out about the multiple naps in one race when I asked a friend of mine to join the same line and he was told to back a different horse in the very same race.

I also followed Marten Julian’s “dark horses“, „NH dark horses“, „Christmas meeting dark horses“, „Cheltenham Festival dark horses“ and his Festival bulletin and further crap. It took me a while, but I was glad when it was over.

    4. TRUE

The first racecourse I ever visited was Woodbine, Canada.

We lived in Toronto, Canada from late 1981 till September 1983. I was (and still am) a huge Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays fan at that time, but when there were no home games to visit, my dad insisted to go with him to the racetrack. In those days it was called Greenwood (or Old Woodbine Racetrack). Dad always made sure I had a meal at the racetrack, cause he knew I’d tell Mum about how much he cared for me even when out gambling. I was ten at that time, obviously I told my Mother everything she wanted to know.

    5. TRUE

I attended all three days of the 2003 Festival without having to buy a ticket. (No invitation, no fake ticket, best viewing)

My girlfriend at that time, fell down a few stairs the Saturday before the Festival when we came home from a party. I was a bit worried that we’d have to postpone our Festival visit, so I took her straight away to the hospital and asked for X-rays to be taken which luckily didn’t reveal any fractures. She still couldn’t put weight on her ankle and wore a cast, so I organized a wheel chair for her the next day and we were off to Cheltenham. We hadn’t bought tickets in advance and when we got there we realized that there was a platform for disabled viewing (about half a furlong from the finish line) and the companion (which was me) didn’t need a ticket. The ticket touts were quite „generous“ when they saw a blonde girl in a wheelchair and no financial damage was done when talking about the ticket price.

    6. FALSE

When I’m on holiday in France, I regularly eat horse meat.

No, I don’t. I was just thinking of fake Seinfeld character Jay Riemenschneider who according to Kramer eats horse meat every day (Dear Ian Davies, I hope you’ve read this). The French have a lot of butcheries that sell horse meat, so it wouldn’t be that unusual, but I try avoiding it, if possible.

    7. FALSE

Dial M for Murder is my favorite Hitchcock movie.

No, for me it’s rather a tie between Frenzy and Torn Curtain. But, I guess I’m someone changing his opinion every new decade. What I like most about Frenzy is the 20-1 nap given by Rusk to Blaney for the 2.00 at Brighton later that day. Try to watch that scene with your non-racing friends.

    8. FALSE

I have my own YouTube Channel where I unpack and unwrap things on a regular basis.

No, but I would be interested in earning some spare cash with some useful uploads on YouTube. I already own a Hero Go Pro camera and have started filming car drives or city walks when on holiday. But there are already too many clips from people unboxing their products.

    9. FALSE

I have owned several Airbus A380 passenger airplanes – real ones (no miniatures or replicas).

After my less successful ventures with stocks (especially after 9/11) I switched my attention to container ships. My first investments (buying shares in single container ships, getting an annual interest return and then reselling the ship after 7-10 years) started in 2002 and were quite profitable. About 7-8 years later when the Airbus A 380 became a household name I was about to participate as an co-investor through equity shares. A good friend of mine was aware of the problems the A 380 would have to deal later with (tough to resell because not suitable for every airport, the high fuel consumption and not meeting the demands of the new decade) and advised me not to invest. In the end I came close to co-owning several Airbus A 380 planes, but I didn’t.

    10. FALSE

My wife is responsible for the 5 FALSE statements.

I’m not married and my current partner only knows me for about six years.

    The scores are:

Landafar, Marlingford, Ian Davies, Gingertipster, Nathan Hughes and homersimpson

    each EIGHT correct answers

Cork All Star, BigG and EK Flame

    each SIX correct

    Richard88

    FOUR correct answers

Well done to all of you, but I’d like to declare Landafar the winner. It wouldn’t make sense to have a tie-breaker with six people going into it.

It really is becoming a fun thread.
