Correct me if I’m wrong, but Highclere and Elite Racing are racing syndicates with at least three or four Royal Ascot winners each.

Dandino (one), Soviet Song (one) and New Seeker (two Royal Ascot wins) would equal four Royal winners for Elite Racing.

Elite Racing claims to have around 7,500 members, why shouldn’t Mr. Marlingford be among them?
By the way, the Racing Post only lists Pattern winners as what they call Big-Race winners.

    You’re right Erl,

Am sure the page I looked at last night about Elite did not include New Seeker.
Or maybe I was looking at just Group winners.

    X X X X X X X X X X Landafar scores 0 zero. (pot luck, especially for someone who doesn’t know me)

You couldn’t get 0 if you tried. But thinking about it you would get 10/10 as you would put the opposite answer to what you thought. Maybe this is the way to go.

    5) Clare Balding has stopped me in the street to ask for directions.

FALSE- shurely she gets driven everywhere.

    6) My favourite racehorse of all time is the staying chaser Just So.

Thanks for the further entries. I think nearly all the people who’ve been doing this quiz have had a try at my questions now, but if anyone else wants to they have until the end of Sunday.

If you have a go and win, you then have to take a turn at providing your own set of outlandish statements (five TRUE and five FALSE).

    I might be on a 0 / 10 myself here, Homer’.
    Marlingford’s got me foxed.
If doing these again I’d do four of them differently. LOL

I’m more worried about winning than losing. I’ve got more that I can’t
tell than that that I can

That’s what comes of doing your bit for the country, BigG.
You’d better think of some stuff soon.
You’ve got two chances of winning this one. :good:
Are you allowed to say what’s happened without naming names?

Thanks to everyone who had a go at my TRUE or FALSE quiz. The answers, together with some brief explanations, are below. Where a statement was false, I tried to base it on at least a loose connection to real-life.

    1) The only person to have ever blocked me on Twitter/X, or any other social media, is champion jockey Tony McCoy.

FALSE – Back when the Bryony Frost/Robbie Dunne controversy was at its height, I read that Tony McCoy had been blocking people on Twitter when they challenged his views. It’s probably also fair to say he has a reputation for being a bit grumpy. Therefore I thought this statement might sound convincing. However, nobody has ever blocked me as far as I know, and it’s a relief not to shatter IanDavies’ illusions on this point ;-)

    2) I have been to Necker Island in the Caribbean and met its owner, Richard Branson.

FALSE – A friend of mine recently visited Necker Island and met Richard Branson, so I used this as inspiration for this lie. They were attending some kind of corporate event rather than a member of Branson’s social circle.

    3) The first racehorse I ever patted was the 1993 Melbourne Cup winner Vintage Crop.

TRUE – I visited the Irish National Stud while on holiday in the late 1990s. I did not know Vintage Crop had been retired there, and it was a very pleasant surprise to meet him and get to pat him. He was lovely.

The stud still has a Living Legends section of retired greats to this day – one of its residents, Hardy Eustace, has sadly been announced as having passed away over the weekend.

    4) I won a car without realising I had entered a competition to do so.

FALSE – As some of you speculated, a car was probably a bit too far-fetched, but I have won a TV in this manner. I was entered into a random draw after opening a bank account many years ago. The first I knew of it was when I received a call telling me I’d won. Nowadays I’d have hung up thinking it was a scam.

    5) Clare Balding has stopped me in the street to ask for directions.

TRUE – As celebrity anecdotes go this is very dull, but I have been asked for directions by TV’s Clare Balding. It was an extremely short conversation and she seemed pleasant. I know she isn’t overly popular on this forum, but I like her and wish I’d asked for a selfie. I didn’t as she seemed in a bit of a rush.

    6) My favourite racehorse of all time is the staying chaser Just So.

TRUE – My username is the name of a racehorse, so I thought this might make people think this statement was false. For those who don’t know, Marlingford was a Grade 2-winning hurdler back in the early 1990s. His big win was in what is now the Adonis Juvenile Hurdle at Kempton in 1991. Marlingford is definitely one of my favourite racehorses. He was around at the time my interest in racing was growing, and there was something about his big white face and front-running style that I found captivating.

However, Just So is narrowly my favourite racehorse of all time as I love staying chasers, especially those who are absolutely stamina-laden and are keeping on when everyone else has given up. The 1994 Grand National is my favourite race; I could not believe Just So was so prominent that day.

    7) I have beaten snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan in a sporting competition.

FALSE – Several of you got the sport that this question is connected to. I have competed against Ronnie O’Sullivan in running rather than snooker. He has been a keen runner throughout his adult life, and it’s something that he talks about extensively in his several autobiographies. Annoyingly he is pretty good at it too, and I have only competed against him, not beaten him.

    8) The historian and broadcaster Mary Beard once knocked a book off of a table onto my foot.

FALSE – I went to a talk given by Mary Beard last year where she was promoting her latest book. Afterwards she signed a copy for me, but no foot-related violence took place.

    9) I have owned several Royal Ascot winners.

TRUE – Yes, it is time to reveal that I am Sheikh Mohammed! Or perhaps not. Well done to CAS, ERL and GT who were all on the right track. I was a member of Elite Racing Club during their glory days when Soviet Song, Dandino and New Seeker all won at Royal Ascot. New Seeker even managed it twice. If you want to be fussy, you could say that I didn’t really own the horses as the club did, but it was marketed as an ownership experience and I received a tiny share of the owner’s prize money, so I considered this close enough.

    10) I turned down the opportunity to appear regularly in a reality TV programme.

TRUE – Back in the early 2000s, I lived in a shared house. A TV production company was looking to make what was essentially a real-life soap opera about a group of young adults making their way in the world, and we were introduced to them via our landlord. The show could be thought of as a predecessor to rubbish such as The Only Way Is Essex and Made In Chelsea that is so prevalent today.

We were a diverse group including some big characters, and they seemed very keen on us. However, myself and one other housemate had significant reservations about how intrusive it would be, and this led to our group’s involvement falling through. I later found out that the programme made it to air with other people, but it was unsuccessful and soon sank into oblivion.

I hope you enjoyed the questions, and will give the scores in the next post.

The scores are as follows, in reverse order:

    – BigG and homersimpson scored 2.
    – Cork All Star, Gingertipster, Nathan Hughes and Red Rum 77 scored 4.
    – Ex RubyLight, Landafar and Richard88 scored 6. A particular well done to Landafar for having another go after his previous zero and nearly winning this time.
    – The winner is IanDavies with 8. I became a bit worried the questions were too obvious when he was the first to answer and got such a high score! Well done Ian.

    @IanDavies
, as we have already had a set of questions from you, would you like to nominate someone to go next in your place? Alternatively I can come up with a tie-breaker for the three people who tied on 6 points.

    LOL Fooled me, Marlingford.
    Great set of questions.
Talk about putting two and two together… and making… well, four as it happens.

Far be it from me to tell ID what to do but ERL, one of the tied trio in second place, did tie with me for first place in response to ID’s questions right back at the start of this thread. It would seem fair he goes next.
