Well, Fist, I suppose you have to be wrong sometimes
February 9, 2010 at 17:57 #275198To quote Pipe in today’s Post ‘we would probably go straight to Cheltenham’ so have finally got round to backing Notus De la Tour. Ranjobaie upheld the form at Market Rasen. It would be a very strange decision to take on Dunguib so the Triumph looks the obvious race. Hopefully, the ground will not dry out too much.

I took the 25/1 about Notus De La Tour myself last night, stilvi, though I confess I’m a touch concerned that the Fred Winter is being touted as an alternative.

Is he not likely to follow the same path as Mr Thriller last year and take in the Imperial Cup before a crack at the Fred Winter? Mr Thriller went to Sandown on a mark of 145 – Notus De La Tour is currently rated 134 and not entered anywhere in the near future (which you would think he would be if either the Supreme or Triumph were realistic targets).
Owned by Racing For Change, too – what better advert than another of Pipe’s snaffling the Imperial-Festival double?

I haven’t read anything about the Fred Winter – can you reproduce the quote? With no outstanding candidate I can’t see any obvious reason to duck the Triumph but I am aware with Pipe anything is possible. Probably the biggest worry is the fact you can still get 25/1 which would suggest the Pipe money is not on. If he lines up he should not be much bigger than 12/1.
February 9, 2010 at 21:34 #275253I read it on (I think) the Sporting Life website this morning, stilvi.
February 11, 2010 at 09:46 #275546At this stage I would be very impressed with what i’ve seen from Pittoni. He reminds me a little of his stablemate Solhwit. His jumping still leaves a lot to be desired but he has plently of size and scope so expect him to get progressively better with experience. He has a very high cruising speed and already looks ultra tough. He should improve markedly on anything he has acheived to date when he gets a stronger pace and looks the type who’ll love cheltenham particularly the hill. His trainer has expressed doubts about his ability to act on quicker ground but his breeding suggeests that proper national hunt good ground shouldn’t be a problem. If he goes to the triumph he could well start close to favourite which would make quotes of 16/1 still freely available look very big.
February 11, 2010 at 10:58 #275558I must be the only one on here that doesn’t really fancy Carlito Brigante for the Triumph.
I dont think his races have been that impressive, and i definitely won’t be backing him for the Triumph.
Mille Chief is the one to beat in my opinion with Secant Star the main rival.
February 11, 2010 at 11:19 #275562I am sure there are plenty of people with doubts about Carlito Brigante just like plenty of the other contenders.
The Triumph, Albert Bartlett and Bumper are all races where there is still plenty of scope for backing an outsider.
There is a suspicion that Carlito Brigante may be essentially a speed horse who wants quickish ground. He may struggle to get home and his form may not be good enough. Having said that he has a better profile than the favourite who as I have said is essentially priced up on his trainer’s previous record.
February 11, 2010 at 15:20 #275626Sang Bleu beats a nice horse of Venetia Williams just at Huntingdon – maybe back on for Cheltenham (or am I clutching at straws?)

Clutching wildly at some very long straws, Martin
He probably did well to concede 8lbs to the Williams horse but it doesn’t look like Triumph Hurdle form.
Is he particularly well regarded?
February 11, 2010 at 15:32 #275630He’s very well regarded – mainly as a chaser for the future. Won a decent novice hurdle at Auteuil – won by Exoctic Dancer, Master Minded, Azertyuiop and Tell No ONe in the past (Nicholls also bought the runner-up Tanerko Emery) and was well backed for his UK debut in a Grade 1 at Chepstow over Christmas.
Come on Sang Bleu!! (Straws in hand)
February 11, 2010 at 15:50 #275634PN stated back in October that Sang Bleu’s target was the Pertemps Final.
February 11, 2010 at 16:04 #275637Not sure where you read that Rich – he’s not qualified for the Pertemps Final and back in October (they’d only just bought him) he’d have been too highly regarded for a race like that.

Straws! you need to be holding a 4" soil pipe, Sang Bleu already looks like a 3m Chaser,he has No chance in the Triumph hurdle,he will be well outpaced! Sorry Irish!
February 13, 2010 at 18:14 #276263Does anyone know anything about Royal Mix?
It’s not run for a while and now is no longer quoted for the triumph with a lot of bookmakers.
February 13, 2010 at 18:49 #276283Royal Mix has had a setback (per Nicholls RP column today) and may have to miss Cheltenham. He’s gone to Newmarket with American Trilogy and Nicholls says they’ll know more in a weeks time.
Also confirmed that Sang Bleu is going to be put away for next season and he’ll go novice chasing.
