    Thanks VTC!

Finally, here’s a question for you.

Name the horse that ran in The Derby in 1990s, but ran 39 times under Rules without losing his maiden tag. His best placings were a number of seconds in staying chases, though he did win a point-to-point!

Was the Derby runner who never won a race called Colonel Colt? He finished 23rd of 25 runners in Erhaab’s Derby of 1994. Of the two he beat, Foyer unseated his jockey, and Plato’s Republic went on to win one selling hurdle and one chase (off a mark of 68) in thirty-eight starts; a stellar career in camparison with Colonel Colt.

    Well done, Marginal Value.

I saw Colonel Colt finish a distant second of 2 finishers in a desperate 3m 2f heavy ground novice handicap chase at Fontwell (Dec 98) where the top weight was rated 85.

    Over to you…

I had a question all planned for this eventuality. Unfortunately, it was a Derby related question, and I do not think it a good idea to have two Derby related questions on the trot. This is a mixture of topical and ancient; Cheltenham next week, and the recent excellent TV series Wolf Hall which was set in the time of King Henry VIII.

Which Cheltenham Gold Cup winner had in his second generation the name of Henry VIII’s first daughter (although some say the name also applied to one of Henry’s sisters); in the third generation the name of one of Henry’s wives albeit with a French spelling; and in the fourth generation the name of Henry’s other daughter?

I hope it doesn’t sound too much like a history test.

Questions for NATHAN ONLY, the rest of you must suffer the history question.

Talking of Gold Cups, in which year was Arsene Wenger a year late for a date with Henrietta Knight?

Of Arsene Wenger’s many charges, which:
striker from Amsterdam could be described as the Gold Cup winner of 2003
midfielder from Dakar could be described as the Gold Cup winner of 2010
defender from Oxford could be described as the Gold Cup winner of 2000

Henrietta Knight wouldn’t be so stupid as to date Mr Wenger, don’t talk so daft Marginal.

    Bergkamp? Vieria? Ray Parlour?

Ray Parlour wasn’t a defender so I’ll have to have a rethink on that one.

    Bergkamp is the Best, mate.
    Vieira is an Imperial Commander.
Keown Looks Like Trouble, and always has.

Henrietta Knight won the top Cup in her sport in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Arsene Wenger was on course to win the top Cup in his sport in the same years, but did not get there in 2004; but got there one year later in 2005.

So, back to the real question: Which Cheltenham Gold Cup winner had females related to Henry VIII in the second, third and fourth generations of his pedigree?

    I’ll have a bash MV

No idea which Gold Cup winner it is but are the antecedants

    Mary Tudor
Catherine d’Aragone / Katerina d’Aragona or summat like
    Elizabeth Tudor

If correct, are Owen Tudor and/or Tudor Minstrel also in the pedigree?

You are right about the first and third in your list. The second name is also the name of a Donizetti opera, or tragedia lirica, and it was a bit of a tragedy that the timing of our excellent CGC winner’s career overlapped with the career of one who was better than excellent.

There is no Owen Tudor or Tudor Minstrel in the pedigree, except that our CGC winner’s sire was a half brother to Owen Tudor. The three Queens are in the female line of the sire of our CGC winner, and obviously of Owen Tudor.

Against my beloved Yorkshire in 1901 Somerset were bowled all out for under 100 in their first innings, but what was there 2nd innings total?
