Yes, that was one. The other well-known ones I spotted were Rock Sand, Dante and Mill Reef. I suppose I ought to do a proper check tomorrow morning to see if there are any others.
June 16, 2010 at 18:15 #301226Persimmon sired the only horse ever to win four English classics.
What was
a) the name of that horse ?
and
b) the name of the man who owned and – after his "professional" trainer quit him for a saner boss – also trained it for those classics ?
June 16, 2010 at 18:36 #301232Sceptre (1902) trained by Bob Sevier, bred by Duke of Westminster. (Sevier’s biography
Neck or Nothing
by Miles Napier (I think) is a great read.) Sceptre’s only classic defeat came in the Derby. Her first race at 3 was in The Lincoln Handicap!! (In which she was beaten).
Sevier was many things, bookmaker, actor, sort-of policeman in South Africa, big-time gambler, racing publisher and a bit of stud.*Correction – as Wit points out,
Neck or Nothing
was written by John Welcome, not as I put above.
June 16, 2010 at 21:06 #301276well done.
Siever had an interesting method of running her over successive or near-successive days for her 3 yo career:
2nd in the Lincoln
Won 2000 Guineas
Won 1000 Guineas
4th in Derby (left at start)
Won Oaks
Unplaced Grand Prix de Paris
5th in Coronation Stakes
Won St. James’ Palace
2nd in Sussex Stakes
Won Nassau
Won St. Leger
2nd in Park HillNeck or Nothing I think was by "John Welcome", nom-de-plume of ex-solicitor John Brennan (hence maybe all the detail about Siever’s Court cases), also sometime Irish steward and biographer of Fred Archer.
June 17, 2010 at 00:14 #301331Didn’t realise the Nassau was that old.
June 17, 2010 at 01:04 #301342Q) The dog that won the 1968 Greyhound Derby was best known because of who owned him. Name of greyhound and owner please.
June 17, 2010 at 06:11 #301374Camira Flash owned by HRH Duke of Edinburgh
…at old White City, capacity for 150,000 and track circumference of 500 yards. Now all buried under the BBC.

June 17, 2010 at 07:23 #301383Phar Lap’s skeleton is moving from New Zealand to Melbourne, but only for a few months. Not sure if that is the answer you’re looking for.
June 17, 2010 at 08:19 #301392Kiwi, but claimed by Australia as their own???
that’s the one.
from the scmp:

"….Australian media may have overstepped the mark yesterday by dubbing New Zealand "Australasia" after their historic draw against Slovakia, prompting paroxysms of rage across the Tasman Sea."Australasia 1 – Slovakia 1: Kiwis get the point," trumpeted the Sydney Morning Herald’s front page headline, over a picture of New Zealand’s Winston Reid celebrating his late equaliser.
The tongue-in-cheek description was taken up by Australian breakfast TV, prompting New Zealanders to pause from celebrating one of the country’s finest sporting moments to lash out at their neighbours.
"Aussies struggle with All Whites’ result," read a headline on stuff.co.nz, while the National Business Review’s website ran with, "Dirty Aussies lay claim to NZ’s World Cup glory".
"New Zealanders are today celebrating our nation’s first-ever World Cup point following the All Whites’ 1-1 draw with Slovakia. So are Australians," the Review’s report said, slamming the Herald’s "stunning gall".
"Bloody Australians, unbelievable, they will claim anything as their victory," tweeted one disgruntled Kiwi.

June 17, 2010 at 09:33 #301404Okay, name a Gold Cup winner that has won the Prix du Cadran in the same calendar year.
June 17, 2010 at 10:04 #301414Sagaro 1976
June 17, 2010 at 10:49 #301430Yes.
This is another question that I have to check what the other answers are. I’m creating too much work for myself.
June 17, 2010 at 18:21 #301572There were any number of uncompetitive staying races around in the ’70s and ’80s Gerald for which one horse was admirably suited, as I’m sure you’re aware. Sagaro I remember but there may be others. Check out Exceller, Le Moss, Ardross and Teamster for example who may well have completed the ‘double’… I dunno or don’t recall
Anyway, my turn (what fun) :
These two all-round gents spent their summers at New Road; one their winter at Bramall Lane, and the other at Sincil Bank
