I had to remind myself of some of the 1000 Guineas winners in the 21st Century. A lot did nothing subsequently.

To my mind Miesque is a clear winner. The Niarchos family should have had another candidate. Six Perfections got a shocking ride behind Russian Rhythm. I think she proved herself the better filly afterwards.

Minding was top class. I watched her Oaks again recently. I am still astonished that she won after the ride Moore gave her.

I had to pick Pebbles, partly because she stopped right in front of me the first time I ever went to the Newmarket gallops. Her win in the Champion Stakes when she cantered all over good horses is still one of my favourites. I miss those Champion Stakes on the Rowley Mile.

Tell me about it. I’ve still got the hole in my pocket from that one. :negative:

I’m surprised that there hasn’t been more recognition for Flying Water here. She may have been a bit before most of us got into racing but even the most cursory research reveals just what a talented, top-class filly she was. It’s a pity that her career was blighted by injury and an absolute tragedy that she died the way she did.

Yeah- I can see the recency bias kicking in with people overrating Minding here.

    The results are in…

1st Pebbles mid division, headway halfway, strong run final furlong to lead close home

dh 2nd Minding always prominent, led 2f out, headed inside final furlong, ran on well

4th Bosra Sham tracked leaders, stayed on but never able to get on terms

5th Salsabil always mid div, kept on one pace

6th Flying Water prominent early, soon lost place

The other four runners join the UK’s post-Brexit Eurovision entries on nul points:

You’re welcome, illavim and Jac. B-)

Illavim, it was your late vote for Pebbles that gave her the win, as she had been trailing Minding, and was level with Miesque, at that point.

Jac, your favourite filly ran a smashing race, looking all over the winner when she took the lead in the poll a couple of days ago. However, illavim’s late vote for Pebbles just swung things in the favour of Clive Brittain’s chestnut and she pipped Minding and Miesque at the post.

It was certainly a closer contest than Frankel’s romp in the colts’ equivalent!

Good for the smaller trainers to pip the O’Brien battalions once in a while
Racing tv has been reshowing 1000 and 2000 Guineas past few days, did enjoy seeing Speciosa romp home and the note of surprise in the commentary!

Amen to that. I like AOB- well, apart from his irritating habit of leaving his sunglasses on when being interviewed- but his stable’s domination (and it looks like his sons are going to follow in his footsteps) of the flat racing scene is so tedious.

I certainly wouldn’t mind a few more Speciosa-type results. :good:

Pebbles is a very worthy winner. She was a great filly trained by a great trainer.

I watched all the RTV replays at the weekend. Miesque’s performance was remarkable. If you stopped the recording at the furlong pole you would not have called her as the winner. She had dropped back and was being ridden. Yet as soon as she was switched to the stands side she absolutely took off and settled it in a matter of strides. Pure class.
