January 9, 2021 at 16:56 #1517052Very nice of Richard Hoiles to respond Nathan and nice to know that he pops in here from time to time.
Very well done to Bachelors Hall on winning Thread Of The Year..the amount of time and effort and all the information contained in that Thread is amazing and the insight into young horses taking their first steps to possibly becoming top class chasers is invaluable .
I know you’ve had you knockers on here BH and I don’t care for all that, but nothing can take away from your outstanding contribution to TRF this year..Also a quick thank you to all who voted for Meydan Thursday 2020 it was a real curved ball of a Thread that started out trying to find a few winners in the desert at Meydan on 1st Jsnuary 2020 and found itself at the heart of the pandemic with a great bunch of TRFers posting not only great tips but updates on how they and families were getting through these awful times ..that Thread belongs to everyone who posted..many thanks
Many thanks also to Nathan for all the hard work you have put into this. Jac
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...January 9, 2021 at 17:09 #1517053Well done to all winners, especially Bachelors Hall with the juvenile thread. I’m surprised that any other threads even got nominated, never mind voted for, over that one.
January 10, 2021 at 15:29 #1517115Seeing as the finest commentator in the land has done an acceptance speech of sorts…
I think the award goes to show how progressive the sport has become over the years. Given that a horse racing community collectively bestowed its second most prestigious award upon a homeless vegan, it would be difficult to argue that our beloved pastime is anything but modern and inclusive in its ethos. That being said, this should also serve as a stark wake up call to everyone contributing to these boards. After all, if some homeless vegan can win thread of the year then something must have gone terribly wrong!
In all seriousness, I am sincerely grateful and rather overawed by the kudos. Though my contributions are broadly a personal exercise of a didactic nature, the respect that they have been given is not taken lightly.
While the bulk of my attention on these boards has recently oriented around horse racing, I fear that I might have misrepresented myself in the voting thread by unwillingly implying that anything on TRF outside of the sport is possibly superfluous. For the sake of clarity, I can state categorically that this is not my opinion. The community spirit which emanates organically outside of our common interest is palpable, and the Meydan Thursday thread did not just demonstrate, but unequivocally proved that the bonds made on this forum are tangible, sincere and, last year especially, crucial. Indeed, in this regard I am quite embarrassed that the juvenile hurdlers thread won the vote. As much as I strive for the thread to be informative, it pales in comparison when it comes to the appreciable positive impact it has on the real lives of others. To this end, I offer only my heartiest congratulations to Triptych and everybody mesmerised by the desert sands for creating something truly remarkable. I would also like to express praise for ExRubyLight for his Southwell thread. The welfare of the horses to whom we owe our passion is paramount, and any compromise to same should be held to the most uncompromising scrutiny and admonishment. It takes a brave person in this current climate to address the occasional trespass of the proverbial elephant into our proverbial house. Although we as racing fans are aware that the elephant is usually meandering outside and staying out of harm’s way, we can not use the antagonism of zealots, or the fleeting and fickle waves of the uninformed public, as an excuse to not maintain vigilance on our own affairs.
As an aside, I don’t know if I ever formally conceded the poem of the year contest, but for what it’s worth, well done Nathan, you were the worthy winner. After all, you wrote an actual poem whereas I just wrote the same word ten times. I can see now that I was beaten by the better scribe. I am not sure if there is, or ever has been, any needle between us. Given that I was rather more mercurial and prone to biodegradable memories in the past, it is entirely possible. Nevertheless, for what it is worth, I think your efforts here are laudable, and whatever is beneficial for the forum is beneficial for me so you are definitely in my good books
That should just about cover it. So thanks everybody for voting, whoever you voted for, thanks everybody for contributing, however that may be, thanks to everybody on the admin team for their tireless and worthy work, and I wish you all a peaceful and enjoyable 2021.
January 11, 2021 at 05:44 #1517191Congratulations, BH/Kotkijet.
Unbelievable amount of work must go into your pots.
January 13, 2021 at 12:18 #1517404And on the seventh day he rested …. and here I am. I have put both Elon Musk and the tortoise to shame with my furious schedule of late, plus a spartan regime of no TV (apart from BBC online with my first morning tea followed by a bit of Al jazeera) no alcohol and no internet (see above). I have been attributed key worker status so can park more or less freely in the parts of the quickly sickening bankrokeciti that need me – so the Alien looking creature that frightened old ladies in the subway system has been temporarily confined to vacant aisles in Tesco.
Enough of me – I would like to congratulate all winners in this yearly fest of who can toss the caber further. But first mention goes to the tug of war winner Richard the HEAVER Hoiles whose leg muscles and firm grip were too much for Simon the HO Holt winning him his seventh year on year truffle tussle.
As for the BIG ONE Venture to Cognac has sealed his sixth consecutive win which is an unassailable record in my book and testament to what he does so well on this platform. Every good wish to you VTC and keep that secret potion to yourself
I now have something rather unpleasant to write as life is not all peaches and cream but has the occasional puppy dog tail with a rabid dog lurking on the other end which leads me on to ….the list
Sadly a deficient list as those pre 2007 are lying seethingly set in a murky Dead sea nestling next to a fed up looking Davy’s locker list. Put that to rights or risk the phantom’s return year on year to throw his bells.
We have at least one further GRAYSONS COLUMN ( lets hear it for Jeremy’s third column) At least one DAVID CORMACK ( lets hear it for David who came to fame escaping on a horsey as 15 in the Prisoner series )
Next we see an airbrushed IAN DAVIES who has two big ones to his name and goes by several titles but we will ascribe him his favourite today ‘chief’ – So let’s hear it for the Chief. You see COMPLETE SILENCE… they are all under the sea and there’s the rub and time for me to take my third tea…
( Time passes )…tick tock tock goes the forum tick.Someone almost two decades ago once said ‘gamble is God’ and I know for a fact Ian Davies was also ascribed the same three letters ( or were they something different ?) but given two possibly confirmed gods dogs or logs we have a new one to consider – the biggest improver who heralds and confirms the benefits of living in a confined dripping space and Veganism to boot – the one and only Bachelors Hall ( Thread of the Year ) stand Tall when you enter the Hall and welcome to the deity.
flatcapgamble… let’s hope he goes back in his box like me.
Tortoise…The only way is my way as little slow steps can get you anywhere
The corrected list…
January 13, 2021 at 12:34 #1517407Looks like the TheRacingForum and Football have the same issues here Gamble
