December 2, 2014 at 11:18 #497159*Poster of the Year
Venture To Cognac
: God only knows how much time and effort VTC puts into the race previews in the Big Races section. Always in depth and comprehensive. Couple this with his work running the TRF Ten to Follow, generously sponsored by Cavelino Rampante, and VTC has to be a leading contender this year.
*Flat jockey of the Year
I expect there will quite rightly be plenty of nominations for Ryan Moore but I think
Pat Smullen
deserves a mention. A career best of 108 winners this season saw Smullen comfortably win the Irish Riders Championship, some 25 winners more than Joseph O’Brien and over twice as many as Kevin Manning and Fran Berry, who were third and fourth in the table respectively.
*Jump jockey of the Year
Barry Geraghty
: a string of big race triumphs in the spring, the pick of which was the Champion Hurdle.
*Villain of the Year
John Hughes
, the Nitrotain-importing former veterinary inspector, who should be doubly nominated for refusing to name the trainers for which he was supplying.
*Hero of the Year
Sizing Europe
: a respectable fourth in the Champion Chae, the 12 year old claimed his seventh Grade 1 at Punchestown and returned with a Grade 2 victory at Gowran in October.
*Flat Horse of the Year
Kingman will no doubt romp home here but for pure excitement in a race I’ll go with the Champion Sprinter
Sole Power
. Over five furlongs he’s exceptional.
*Jumps Horse of the Year
Hurricane Fly
: Notched Grade 1 victories 17, 18 and 19 last season, setting new records in the process. He returned this season to win his 20th Grade 1 against Jezki in the Morgiana.
*Flat Trainer of the Year
Even though he inherited a lot of firepower, it was a fantastic achievement for
Richard Hannon
to win the trainer’s title in his first season at the helm.
*Jumps Trainer of the Year
Willie Mullins
: The firepower he has assembled over the last few years is phenomenal, exemplified by the team of novice hurdlers he had last season. It will be interesting to see if they maintain their dominance in novice chases and in open company over hurdles this season. Won almost £1.4 million more in prize money than Paul Nicholls last season.
*Owner of the Year
Mrs S Ricci
, owner of nine individual Grade 1 winners last season, including two very impressive Cheltenham Festival winners in Vautour and Faugheen.
*One To Watch in 2014
Tell Us More
: has only won a bumper and a maiden hurdle but already looks to have the star quality that could see him a warm order for Cheltenham victory in March, possibly in the Neptune.
*Racing Journalist of the Year
The Irish Field’s
Kevin Blake
, who as well as writing in the paper, has a weekly blog that is always worth a read.
*Racing Broadcaster of the Year
Gary O’Brien
: never get tired of listening to ‘The Voice’ on ATR, knows his subject extremely well and always good interviews with trainers, owners etc.
*Commentator of the Year
Always like listening to
Simon Holt
‘s commentaries. He makes a big race seem, well, big!
*Racecourse of the Year
Galway
: everything is so well organised during race week. Plenty of shuttle buses in and out from the city, never waiting too long for food/drink. They know what people are there for and they nail it.
*Riding Performance of the Year
Has to be
Paul Townend on Boston Bob in the Melling Chase
for me. Some sticky jumps had Boston Bob at the rear of the field and looking a very unlikely winner about half way round but Towned didn’t panic on him. He nursed the horse into contention, despite some more slow jumping, and when he came to the last he knew what he had under the bonnet, extending away for an ultimately comfortable success.
December 2, 2014 at 21:08 #497219a few from me
*Poster of the Year
SteveCaution
excellent contributions made and talks a lot of sense with in an depth thought process. The forum was poorer for his absence when he went AWOL for a while. Good sense of fun aswell. Too many to mention but hitting the crossbar were VTC, thehorsesmouth, Triptych and Steeplechasing.
*Flat jockey of the Year
Richard Hughes
champion jockey despite having to take time out early in the season with a back injury. Won his fair share of group 1’s again.
*Hero of the Year
Lady Cecil and Noble Mission
fairy tale story in winning the champion stakes against all the odds.
*Flat Horse of the Year
Tiggy Wiggy
destroyed some good fields, coming out the stalls like lightning and burning them off early and just when they looked like closing she accelerated away again.
*Jumps Horse of the Year
Faugheen
unbeaten, never off the bridle.
*Flat Trainer of the Year
Eddie Lynam
dominated the sprint division which is possibly the hardest one to dominate with any loss of ground from the stalls and more luck in running involved.
*One To Watch in 2014
Cam Hardie
winners for Hannon and Godolphin, has a cool head on young shoulders
*Riding Performance of the Year
Frankie Dettori
on Olympic Glory in the Foret
the horse was outpaced and looked dead and buried but Dettori kept him up to his work and the horse responded to win snuggly.

*Riding Performance of the Year RM TGG IRISH CHAMPquote]December 2, 2014 at 22:08 #497226I am a part-timer current poster
of the year and to some daft as a brush.
My view counts though just as much as
yours in this totalitarian sometimes
democratic collection of bleating voices we
live in.Poster of the year…
I nominate Nathan Hughes. He has had a very
good year eclipsing the last two years
for merit in my opinion.
Held himself together very well in some very
edgy threads and some interesting live takes
and good background work on the site all helped
him.Horse of the year… has to be the now retired Frankel
and I would have done the same for Arkle – these horses
come around once in a generation.Jockey of the year is MCILROY I mean
Tony McCoy I never go in a
sauna running on empty – what dedication.Trainer of the year – must be Pipe’s son
who has come of age and his Dad was a
difficult act to follow but somehow he has
achieved his own following and stardom.
I would like to mention my affection
for the late Henry Cecil who has contributed
greatly to the history and the old era
when horse racing stood hoof to hoof with other sportsVillain of the year
Has to be the Rickster and best ride of the year too
just outdoing the chopper in a breathtaking finish.
( Sorry David you did not quite qualify this year )Biggest Loss of the year..
Has to be the ever present absence of the ghosts
and added to by the gun sucking Pilsen who complained
my victory last year was a gigantic fix. I forgive
him this erratic outburst – after all who cares what
people say ?Thread of the year…
Hmmm may come back on that one – certainly Pott’s
leap into the past today is in the running but more
as post of the year
as the thread is as yet underdeveloped.Biggest slip on a banana of the year
Has to be Steeplechasing and his swearing
in front of the ladies
in the poster of the year at the back end
closely followed by Billynomates – you are
not a ghost Bill – and tonight Mathew I am
appearing as ghostybill singing Seagulls
last ride !(Both Steeplechasing and Bill
are terrific in the respect stakes though)December 2, 2014 at 22:40 #497229Good thinking Nathan. Here are my nominations:
*Poster of the Year
A close call between
Stilvi
and
ricky lake
for me. I don’t always agree with their views, but they clearly love racing and want the best things for the sport.
[b]*Flat jockey of the Year
It has to be
Ryan Moore
. Too busy to be Champion Jockey because his time is filled by being the best jockey in the world. The strongest, the best judge of pace and one of very few jockeys on the flat who regularly leaves you thinking "nobody else would have won on that horse".
*Jump jockey of the Year
I know we haven’t seen him in action much lately, but AP McCoy is still the man. I followed the summer jumping quite closely this year for the daily marvels he produced. He rides as though he’s in the head of a horse – nagging and motivating at the first sign of laziness.*Villain of the Year
I’ll put up the annual nomination for
Animal Aid
then. They’re spewing poorly-researched bile about racing at a even more prolific rate and hit a despicable new low with their Wigmore Hall articles this year.
If I’m allowed two, Nicky Henderson’s disregard for ante-post punters must earn him a spot.
*Hero of the Year
Victory Gunner
, still plodding along merrily and doing his level best in staying chases deep into his teens.
*Flat Horse of the Year
Toast Of New York
– from all-weather also-ran to international superstar.
*Jumps Horse of the Year
This is a difficult one since there are no real standouts in any of the divisions at the moment. I’ll give my vote toBalthazar King
for his raw desire to win and immense run in the Grand National.
*Flat Trainer of the Year
I don’t know how he does it, but
David O’Meara
is working miracles. From taking G1s with other people’s castoffs to improving exposed handicappers for 15lbs, he’s doing things that nobody else is.
*Jumps Trainer of the Year
It’s easy to forget
Jonjo O’Neill
now his yard if having a quiet time, but I’d bank on him to get a horse ready for a big day above anyone else.
*Owner of the Year
JP McManus.
*One To Watch in 2015
Emerging Talent
*Racing Journalist of the Year
Probably a wasted nomination since bloodstock isn’t the most popular topic in the racing press, but
Nancy Sexton
‘s articles are compulsive reading for me. Her research is superb, she offers unique insights and shouldn’t be skimmed past.
*Racing Broadcaster of the Year
Matt Chapman seems to put more work in to his job than anyone else on the racing channels. He’s very busy with his work for Sky, ATR and Coral TV, but is always well-prepared. Even with American racing or the greyhounds, he knows what’s likely to make the running and how a race is likely to shape. His enthusiasm for the job can spill over into making him grate on some people, but I really admire his work.
*Commentator of the Year
I’m with
Simon Holt
in the annual Holt v Hoiles battle.
*Racecourse of the Year
I can’t speak for facilities as I didn’t visit many tracks this year, but as an armchair pundit, I’ll nominate
Newbury
. It feels like the fairest course with testing fences, where the best horse generally wins.
*Riding Performance of the Year
Pat Smullen on the very frustrating Short Squeeze in the Clipper Logistics Stakes at York. Perfect judgement of pace, brave execution and very strong.December 3, 2014 at 09:18 #497243*Poster of the Year – a few I’d like to mention. All those who contribute to Daily Lays and Plays. We put our reputations on the line but the support on that part of the forum is fantastic. In particular I would mention Nath, Boz, VTC, THM, Darren, The One and Only Legend in his own Lunchbox Gord, the brilliant and hilarious Stevie C and of course the Ginge! My nomination will go against the grain though. It is JollyP. He winds everyone up, especially me, but I admire the way he fights his corner, very often completely by himself. He showed his class with his preview of the Melbourne Cup which almost looked as though it could have been written after the race such was its accuracy.
*Flat jockey of the Year – James Doyle
*Jump jockey of the Year – AP
*Villain of the Year – Richie Mcgrath – take it from me, you couldn’t wish to meet a nastier piece of work
*Hero of the Year – Toby Balding
*Flat Horse of the Year – easy, Noble Mission. Come on guys – who would have thought at the beginning of the season……..?
*Jumps Horse of the Year – Faugheen
*Flat Trainer of the Year – John Gosden
*Jumps Trainer of the Year – Venetia Williams
*Owner of the Year – David Johnson
*One To Watch in 2014 – (surely that should read 2015?) Lady Correspondent
*Racing Journalist of the Year – Alistair Down
*Racing Broadcaster of the Year – Lydia
*Commentator of the Year – Ian Bartlett
*Racecourse of the Year – Newmarket (much maligned but really impressed with how they looked after my young family on Guineas Day)
*Riding Performance of the Year – James Doyle (Epic on Noble Mission in The Champion)"this perfect mix of poetry and destruction, this glory of rhythm, power and majesty: the undisputed champion of the world!!!"
December 4, 2014 at 20:55 #497394*Poster of the Year
Venture To Cognac
: God only knows how much time and effort VTC puts into the race previews in the Big Races section. Always in depth and comprehensive. Couple this with his work running the TRF Ten to Follow, generously sponsored by Cavelino Rampante, and VTC has to be a leading contender this year.
Not forgetting his running of TRF vs Pricewise comp, unbeatable systems and that ice bucket challenge in his boxer shorts….

*Hero of the Year

Blackbeard to conquer the World
December 5, 2014 at 10:28 #497438Those were my best boxers Nathan …………..a horrible sight, I thought all who were subjected to it would have blocked it out of their mind by now
December 5, 2014 at 10:55 #497441I didn’t understand why they left off Pinocchio’s nose?

Blackbeard to conquer the World
December 5, 2014 at 10:59 #497444Poster of the year…Bobby (VTC) by a mile for my money. His appetite for hard graft is astonishing, topped only by his good nature.
For the other awards, I’m unqualified to say, as I’ve only dipped in and out of racing in the past year (for various reasons). Hopefully, I’ll be able to contribute sensibly (for a change) next year.
Good luck to all.
December 5, 2014 at 17:21 #497488My contribution:
*Poster of the Year
I won’t reply to that one as I don’t know much of you, but there are some posters that I appreciate reading (Venture to Cognac
,
Nathan Hugues
,
Steeplechasing
,
stevecaution
, to name a few…)
*Flat jockey of the Year
Ryan Moore
. I can’t type anything else. He was great.
*Jump jockey of the Year
AP McCoy
, once again. No hesitation.
*Hero of the Year
California Chrome
. He won two races of the US Triple Crown, then finished third in the Classic, and went on recently to win at Grade I level… on turf. I imagine that breeders certainly like horses which are able to win on various surface. I hope he comes to Ascot next year.
*Flat Horse of the Year
Taghrooda
. Oaks-KGVI and QEII. Third in the Arc. A marvelous filly.
*Jumps Horse of the Year
Hurricane Fly
. An unbelievable record with 20 Grade I races… so far!
*Flat Trainer of the Year
Criquette Head
. Life wasn’t always nice for her, and what Trêve did in the Arc may be seen as a kind of justice. Criquette did an amazing job, she never lost faith and kept focusing on Trêve’s main objective.
*Jumps Trainer of the Year
Willie Mullins
. He definitely hasn’t something to complain about.
*One To Watch in 2015
Epicuris
*Riding Performance of the Year
Olympic Glory in the GI Prix de la Forêt at Longchamp. I watched that race many times andDettori
simply did a magic trick.
December 6, 2014 at 18:29 #497706Not going to get too bogged down with nominations but a couple of categories:
Poster Of The Year –
for sheer volume of work he’s put in, particularly his efforts in the Ten to Follow.
Riding Performance Of The Year –
in January. Superb judgement of pace throughout the race to get the absolute best out of his horse to beat higher rated opponents.
Rob
December 6, 2014 at 18:31 #497707Hero of the year – Outlaw Tom for that demolition job at Hexham in April.
…with an honourable mention for the Official Handicapper for dropping him to 93 and giving us such a golden opportunity!
Rob
