Yeesh, this place is dead. A few more nominations to expand the list:

Flat Horse of the Year – Glen Shiel (from useful miler to G1 staying-sprinter)
Flat Jockey of the Year – Pierre-Charles Boudot – the first French jockey in a long time (maybe ever) who you’d place alongside the world’s elite in terms of tactical awareness and pace judgement. Now established on the world scene and putting his French colleagues to shame every day of the week at home.
Jumps Jockey of the Year – Jack Tudor – breakthrough year and an incredibly safe pair of hands for such a young man, reliably bringing home C. Williams gambles and impressively taking the right course in the Fontwell incident the other week.
Flat Trainer of the Year – (Paul &) Oliver Cole – Oliver’s influence bringing the stable up from borderline laughing stock to shrewd outfit status since sharing the licence.
Jumps Trainer of the Year – Fergal O’Brien – a force for good on social media, deadly in improving horses from other yards, gets them fitter than anyone first time out
Hero of the Year – Philip Davies MP – horse racing’s defender and protector
Riding Performance of the Year – Charlotte Jones on No Hiding Place at Carlisle, PC Boudot on Tankarville at Dieppe (went the Willie Carson route), Hollie on Glen Shiel in Champions Sprint
Broadcaster of the Year – Simon Nott
One to watch 2021 – Joseph Parr
Racecourse of the Year – Cartmel
Journalist of the Year – Maddy Playle
Villain of the Year – Mick Appleby (Spring Romance jockey change coup), Ben Jones (disgraceful petulant whip use on Sandy Boy at Huntingdon), Nicky Henderson/JP McManus (appeal against Dame De Compagnie’s handicap mark), Will Hoffman a.k.a. StopwatchRacing (scams/betting revelations), Mark Holder (recent behaviour on Twitter and activity in racing press), Andy Holding (tipping and recording P/L at prices long gone when column goes live)
Owner of the Year – In spite of the above, JP McManus. We’ll miss him when he’s gone.

Riding Performance of the Year: Paul Townend on Al Boum Photo (Gold Cup) – simulate that race 10 times and how many times does he win? 1? 2? Masterful judgment on the biggest stage.

I am very thankful for the POTY nominations and flattered to the point of embarrassment. Particularly as my contributions would not be discernibly more significant to the wellbeing of this forum than that of any other member. This is a medium which is inevitably going to struggle in the modern arena of social media, which is a great shame because the benefits of genre specific platforms – community, civility, accountability and genuine passion to name but a few – are much more palatable than the superficial chaos offered by the alternatives. I think anybody who helps to keep this forum functioning by contributing in any way, shape or form is doing a massive service for all concerned. To this end, if it does not go against the spirit of the award, would it possible to nominate “Everybody” as poster of the year? Especially as everybody has played a tangible role in helping to provide what has been a fundamentally useful refuge during an exceptionally trying year and it would be quite unfair to single one out over another.

Probably a bit wet and whimsical but for what it’s worth, I am grateful for everybody who has posted here in 2020.

Lots of good ones already so I have not much to add but will throw in a couple:

    One to watch
Grangeclare West. Lovely looking horse and hope he can start doing his price tag justice in the ’21-’22 season

    Broadcaster of the year
Rishi Persad. Could have sat quietly collecting his paycheque and pretended that everything in the racing garden is rosy but stuck his head above the parapet to speak about his first hand experiences of racism in the sport. He did it pretty much alone- I know Josh Apiafi was interviewing him but Rishi copped all the flak afterwards. He explained (“admitted” is the wrong word) that he was hired in the first place as pretty much a token, and what that feels like. He has grown into the role and is a calm, likeable presence on the ITV team. Seems a decent bloke with no side to him and handled the fallout of his Apiafi interview with dignity- he really seems to just want the best for racing and everyone who works in it.

    Journalist of the Year
Well I suppose he is a broadcaster really but didn’t want to put 2 in one category and he does a bit of everything-
Cornelius Lysaght. Didn’t sit around for long after the BBC dropped him but got on with it and now turns his hand to various things- sportinglife previews, started his own podcast, appears on some others and did a decent job standing in for Nick Luck I thought. Has the ability to keep his mouth shut at the right time and let his interview subjects speak. Also quite often puts up some interesting big ew selections. Another civil presence across various media.

Oh, I’ve thought of another one…next year will you do a podcast category Nathan? I would nominate Dave the Cheltmental guy. Easy to listen to, civil, explains his selections well. As well as Ante Up series also did a very interesting podcast where he explained how he looks through the cards for a weekend to find bets and his horses to follow one at the start of the season was good too.

Good shout about the podcasts Greenasgrass, I’m not much of a listener myself but I expect they are popular
