I refer to four late “NQ” NR at Brighton today.

It should have been picked up a lot earlier, but IMO ultimately the trainers have entered their horses for a race they weren’t eligible for – if the race conditions had been fully read, surely that was clear enough?

It’s their decision to have trust in who they delegate to. The likes of Richard Fahey must delegate down with instructions involving masses of entries at this time of year, and must place trust in more than one individual to have read the entry conditions carefully.

Tony Carroll has said that he is going to check the racing calendar as he can’t understand how he missed the conditions.

Seems a hell of a coincidence that four trainers have all missed the stipulation that your horse had to have two wins or less.

I wonder how often Weatherbys has to flag up to trainers that their entry is ineligible to run.

For me, trainers can delegate as much as they like, but the buck stops with them.

It could have been clearer, it could have been flagged up earlier, but when I heard the line “I suppose the trainers are partly to blame” from one of them my reaction was: “partly?”

I recall a horse bolting up in a chase at Wincanton only to be thrown out a few days later because it was never eligible to run.

That was the Badger Beer CAS. Was it a Mulholland horse?

The interview conducted by Hayley Moore with the BHA chappie seemed to suggest trainers getting an NQ email was a regular occurrence, suggesting it was the fault of whoever checks such things that was at fault.

Patriot – yes, I think it was The Young Master.

Here are the details about The Young Master. He had only run twice over fences before when he needed to have run a minimum of three times.

A computer error at Weatherbys was to blame for the horse slipping through the net. Nevertheless, Mulholland was fined £250 because it was deemed (not unreasonably) to be his fault for not reading the race conditions.

To add insult to injury, the horse was put up a stone by the handicapper. Although as I recall, the horse did go on to have quite a successful career.

I just think we live in a world where literally everything is someone else’s fault and racing is no exception.

Many yards are clearly entering horses up all over the place without bothering to read the race conditions thoroughly and relying on racing’s administrators to flag it up if they’re “NQ.”

Hopefully, more attention will be paid by yards to eligibility at entry for now on – I wouldn’t bank on it, though.

Make the trainer pay the entry fee, or a sizeable fine, that’d sharpen their minds

Yes I backed the 2nd that day to TYM. I remember been rather calm at the time putting it down to one of those things. Horse was a decent price too.

I think I’m more peed off about it now as I’ve just been reminded of this.

Funny how TYM did may a big favour a few years later in the Bet365 Gold Cup bringing up a lucky 15 4-timer.

You would hope this is something which can one day be fixed using AI.

Jeezo trainers like mullins and elliot surely have to delegate. The conditions for that race are unusual so maybe it should have been highlighted. Also the racecourse itself could have seen this happening surely. The fact it was 4 trainers shows it is a highly odd one. Hopefully we can learn lessons to use the most overused cliche we have now.

Shouldn’t be too difficult to delegate to somebody who can read the conditions and match to the horse’s record. It’s a fairly basic skill. Certainly shouldn’t be down to the racecourse to check eligibility. It’s more understandable for mistakes to be made for early closing races where it’s possible that a horse was eligible when entered but then wins, runs etc in between making it ineligible but that’s hardly the case with a handicap at Brighton. The fact that the trainers are up in arms, blaming everyone else and looking for compensation rather than just admit to their sloppy admin is depressing (though not surprising).

I gather the word CONFINED was not in the normal place but further down the conditions. hence four trainers missing it, maybe more trainers missed it in the original entries.
