I’ll be honest I’m a big McCain fan , he,s had difficult times esp the recent flu outbreak yet he still gets plenty winners , I very nearly put king on my list , I don’t think he kicked on when he had that good spell in 2000,s , he seems to spend as much time on the all weather rather than jumps now yet I reckon he could go close in the Scottish national , Martin’s a good shout , bookies use to be terrified of him getting one in at the bottom of a handicap
March 28, 2019 at 20:52 #1411040Hannon had a big loss when he lost Richard Hughes
not only was he an exceptional jockey he also had a lot of input into the horses as to where they should go next or how well they were working.Blackbeard to conquer the World
March 28, 2019 at 21:05 #1411093You could say the same about mark johnston , huge yard yet how many classics won …just the 2 isnt it
March 28, 2019 at 21:14 #1411139Donald McCain’s only trained more than 100 winners once in the last five seasons, he was doing that routinely before then. Just nine winners in 2019 so far. Seems ages since he’s had horses the calibre of Peddlers Cross, Overturn, Weird Al, Ballabriggs etc. In the media a lot less too.
Seems a nice guy though, hope he gets back on track.
March 28, 2019 at 21:20 #1411163I’d agree he has t got the quality but then he doesn’t have the owners bar and he odd hemmings horse , took a kick when the Rooney’s took there horses out , there’s something , Rooney’s went back on there decision not to run horses at Cheltenham …did they run any at the festival ….I wouldn’t shout any of them home …def not a fan of there’s
March 28, 2019 at 22:14 #1411289The horses do the talking. Good horses make good trainers and success breeds more success because owners keep sending good horses. The trainers are mostly the same, some just a bit better at placing their horses in the right races than others. It is the horse that wins the race and makes the trainer. Henry would be the first to tell you that.Without the ammunition of the good horse there are no good trainers.

He’s had to rebuild though, from losign his largest owner. He’s had a problem with the equine flu this year (2019) for the whole season, according to RP, he’s had 60 winners, 12% strike rate + 110 placed. From 500 runners 170 win or placed, seems reasonable enough to me!

March 29, 2019 at 23:05 #1414120Alan King has had a very odd season, barely had any Saturday winners over jumps yet his AW string have been doing very well and his midweek jumps horses are running OK. Never been a big Twiston-Davies fan but he seems to be more static rather than declining as such.
If Jonjo was a racehorse he’d be dropping down into selling company. Has the best facilities in the country and consistently underperforms. Noticeable that, after AP’s retirement from the saddle, they have barely had any big race winners (Minella Rocco aside). Isn’t just about the big days though, plenty of the more moderate horses (such as Compadre) have improved for leaving the yard.
Jeremy Noseda seems to be on a gradually downward trajectory. Still has a healthy strike rate but the number of runners is decreasing. 334 in 2009, 190 in 2014 and only 97 last year. Only 30 horses this year, according to Horses-In-Training.
Tony Martin has been struggling in Ireland, Mouse Morris likewise. The latter has only recorded 3 wins so far this season (only 1 since July). Whilst the Gigginstown horse removal would have been a big blow, it was hardly like they were unjustified in doing so.
Pipe has a couple of nice young horses coming through, Eden Du Houx and Umbrigado spring to mind so might stage a recovery. Strike rate for the last 2 seasons has been poorer but wouldn’t give up on him yet.
March 30, 2019 at 08:59 #1414788Why is David Pipe on the downgrade? When was he ever good? I know he won a GN with Comply or Die, but that was under his Dad’s influence. Otherwise he hasn’t achieved that much at the highest level.
One that would really fit on the list is Sir Mark Prescott. The quality of horses like Alborada, Albanova, Last Second, Pivotal is long gone. He doesn’t get anything decent from Kirsten Rausing or Cheveley Park Stud and gains most wins on the AW.
March 30, 2019 at 10:17 #1414798Here’s a clue to the decline of Jeremy Noseda:

The woman in the picture is his ex-wife, bloodstock agent Kerri Radcliffe, who was closely connected with Phoenix Thoroughbreds. The removal of all their horses from the Noseda yard may of course be purely coincidental.
Prior to the marriage, Ms Radcliffe was the ‘other woman’ in the divorce of Keiren Fallon. Lovely place Newmarket, the people there all get on so well together.
March 30, 2019 at 13:17 #1414844Lol which vice to choose , women or horses , both can kick you and empty your wallet , find it strange that prob the top trainer about, Gordon Elliot learned his trade in pipes yard yet his son didn’t
March 31, 2019 at 13:50 #1415169Any trainer can have a bad virus in the yard that’s extremely difficult to get rid of – imo sometimes taking years… And – because of it – trainers lose owners and/or quality horses. McCain one to suffer badly. Health of a the trainer also may play a part. You might have put Sir Michael Stoute in this thread just a few years ago. Sir Henry Cecil even went through a downturn too at one stage. So although some seem on the downgrade they may well recover.
Anyone know if there’s a reason the Jim Bolger yard seemingly does not had the quality it used to?

The likes of Lough Derg, Our Vic, Madison Du Berlais, Grand Crus, Junior, Dynaste, Un Temps Pour Tout or Vieux Lion Rouge amongst others not enough to consider him as “any good”? Is he as prolific as he once was? No, but to say he was never any good is lunacy.
March 31, 2019 at 14:33 #1415174Our Vic was rated 158 and started running under his name when Daddy retired.
Lough Derg was also Daddy’s horse and was 0-8 after being taken over by David Pipe. And even though he won a Long Walk Hurdle, he never was a horse which was brought along by David Pipe.
Junior, another 140+ horse when switched from Alan King to David Pipe. Can’t see him as a proper champ.
Grand Crus had about one and a half good seasons and that was it.
So, please tell me what defines David Pipe as such a good trainer you see in him.
March 31, 2019 at 14:41 #1415175Sir Henry Cecil even went through a downturn too at one stage
That was when his wife told Sheikh Mohammed that Mark of Esteem picked up a bad injury and would have to miss the 1996 2,000 Guineas. He was switched to SBS and won the race first time out.
