brilliant trainer who’s horses run to form more than any other trainer and honest views set him apart from the rest.

I’m not a great fan of Paul Nicholls’ success (mainly so because I dislike domination in a sport by any one competitor a la Tiger Woods or Michael Schumacher) but kudos to the man today.

Great training performance to have the 1st 3 home today and indeed it seems not a Saturday goes by lately without him saddling at least one big winner.

Well done to Paul and all the team at Ditcheat.

Great training performance by PN to get the 1-2-3 in the Gold Cup.
What annoys me slightly is every owner wanting horses with him which gives him such firepower. Why can’t Clive Smith send a nice horse to Alan King, Pipe or Jonjo etc. This is obviously just my opinion but if I had a string of horses they would be spread around.

I’m not sure I’m annoyed by that per se, DM, as it’s not as if they’re sending horses to him without their actions being duly rewarded on the racecourse. However, it is showing an inordinate amount of faith in the Ditcheat yard remaining completely free of coughs and bugs forever. I’d always advocate a spreading of risk.

Clive Smith did have horses with Pipe – Cathcart winner of 2002, can’t rememeber the name, also Rainbow Frontier. Smith then moved his horses to Nicholls .

Why can’t Clive Smith send a nice horse to ______ Jonjo etc

    Possibly because he’s pants perhaps?

Paul Nicholls must owe a big debt of gratitude to Anthony Bromley, who manages to supply his wealthy owners with a seemingly unending stream of top-class ex-French horses, Master Minded being his latest purchase to achieve Championship status.

Astonishing to think that around 60 of Bromley’s purchases competed at the Festival.

I always think it is very difficult to measure a trainer’s ability in the same way as a jockey. Nobody can say for sure that someone else could not have achieved similar with the same horses. Paul Nicholls is fortunate to have a number of owners willing to spend large amounts of money on horses both proven and unproven. Very few have this advantage. I mentioned in an old thread about Fred Winter going back to 1973 – he had at least five champions in a string of about 50 – at a guess I suspect Nicholls has around 3 times that amount. Great achievement but great trainer I am not sure.

Despite the lavish praise he has never come accross to me as particularly likeable. Whenever interviewed he hardly ever seems relaxed and I always get the impression there is a bit of a time-bomb ticking – god forbid anyone who asks the wrong question. I was quite amused that it was he who was handing out advice to Alan King after the Master Minded spat. Yesterday I thought it was a little over the top grabbing his daughter and holding her up to the camera – almost like he had convince everyone he had a human side.

Some unwarranted stuff there i think. Would you rather a trainer who didnt say f all (like so many…) or came out with PR type guff?

Maybe hes had some luck but i dont buy into this at all. he didnt start out with an established operation (and look how often that gets fcked up) and it would be very fair to say that hes got the owners he deserves. None of them strike me as being mugs or the types to really suffer waffling fools

    Hes a superb trainer.
