I suggested to the BHA to encourage British owners to have their horses trained in the UK,that perhaps a 25% bonus could be added to prize money for British owned & trained winners at Cheltenham,Aintree & in other Grade 1 races.

    Something needs to be done.

tbh Something does need to be done. Otherwise British jump Racing – at every level not just the top – will be in terminal decline.

I’d be dead against not letting Irish or any other country’s horses in – as long as they’ve faced the same tests.

Over jumps or on the Flat:
In Britain every trainer knows there is a threat of a drugs sweep at any time.
That threat needs to be the same for every trainer in every country – flat and jumps. Whether it’s in Ireland, France, Australia, USA or UAE too.
Fact is that if other countries authorities turn a blind eye to drug use then that authority knows it will make their horses have an unfair advantage. The authorities are weak in Ireland. With punishments that are a slap on the wrist.
Irish (or any other juristiction) trainers don’t have to let the British test team in… But if they don’t they have a lifetime ban.
Wesley Ward has been found out several times in his native USA for using drugs wrongly in USA races.. And (as far as I understand it) all we have to say that he isn’t using drugs on his horses for racing in Britain… is basically his word. USA authorities can’t do the same checks because their rules are different.

I’d also change the prize money:
One level of prize money for anyone… For any trainer owner and jockey anywhere.
Plus a separate prize money amount paid to the winner (second etc too) ONLY if it is British trained.

I propose Somethingmustbdone as the name of JP’s next Cheltenham festival handicap blot.
    Or Protection Racket.

    we think alike MissIsabella.
Wrote my post without seeing yours. :good:
    I’d go further though.
Reduce the official prize money by 33%.
With a 33% bonus for all connections of British trained horses, the trainers owners and jockeys.
ie If a horse is British trained then it’s not just the trainer that gets a bonus, but the owner and jockey too, wherever that owner and jockey come from.

That’s not just for winners either. All the way down to however many places get prize money.
British owners would come back if knowing they would win more money.

Mark, that’s a good topic: the use of drugs in horse racing.

I kind of like you ideas about tests being conducted by British “Authorities”. But, as you can see while just looking at the international scene, Bob Baffert can send whatever he wants to Saudi Arabia or Dubai. And, the Lads or anyone else isn’t complaining about it. I just wonder why?
Tell me why horses trained by “masters” like Jamie Osborne or Ian Williams all of a sudden rediscover their form – even if it’s for just one or two races – once sent to the desert? It’s not the sun on their backs, is it?

The separate prize-money for home-owned horses should come from a different pool and not be financed just by entry fees for the respective race.

Other countries are entitled to their own rules, ERL.
If any trainer in any country wants to run their horses in Saudi Arabia they must adhere to their rules.
Personally it would be the last place I’d send my horse.

Horses sent overseas to run should be subject to tests when returning.

There is not limitless prize money, it has to come from the same pool… And if the prize money to all conquering yard/s were reduced then maybe it would be uneconomic to send 10 horses from 1 stable over for 1 race.

If I was a billionaire I’d buy the old Tote and announce all profits will go to British Racing.
Bring the take out down too, so instead of 16% every race (or whatever it is now)… I’d do 1% per horse. So a 2 runner race has 2% take out, a 16 runner 16%.
Bookmakers odds compilers would imo not be able to work out odds that accurately.
Bring in a similar 1% “Racing Tax” on betting exchanges that could be worked into their charged commission – money going not to the government but to Racing prize money and welfare.

Agree with you about the Tote as well. Only trouble is there are just too many issues to be settled pretty fast and I doubt we have the right people at the head of the BHB.

Green, “JP’s next Cheltenham festival handicap blot”

Dontwaittillitstoolate could be another one as well…..

Newland is a trainer in decline though things may pick up with his flat runners now that Insole is training them.

Bit of a reverse ferret on the drugs issue.
