Apparently it’s the sponsors Hills who’ve insisted that the race remain at Kempton so given the fact that the BHA meekly comply with what bookmakers ordain that is Newbury, Cheltenham or Ffos Las (would love to see the KG there) ruled out this coming week.
So with one hand tied behind their backs the logical alternative the BHA and Kempton should have considered given the ‘window’ of mildish weather we’re promised up until New Year would have been to slot an extra meet at Kempton this week. Can’t understand why they haven’t done so, particularly as my seaweed and pine cone are forecasting a return to ‘proper winter’ again after next weekend.
In a normal winter concerning oneself with ‘it may be snowing and/or freezing on January 15th’ would be daft as it likely wouldn’t be but this winter it appears to me that it’s a shade of odds-on to be, so every effort should be made to get as much racing on while able to – viz the coming few days
It’s only horseracing we’re talking about admittedly, not matters of life and death but in our own little microcosm it is ‘important’ that we give Kauto Star every opportunity possible to have a bash at a fifth KG.
For goodness sake the words King George and Kauto Star even made the front page of the BBC website and Ceefax index pages following the abandonment.
The interest of the public-at-large has been kindled. This is racing marketing itself as it should – a great race featuring a great horse. Undersell it at your peril BHA etc etc
Get it on this week for chrissakes
Pretty much agree with every word of the above. With only Cheltenham offering any semblance of quality over the long weekend all parties should have worked rogether for either a "Super Saturday" (which CH4 could have doubled up with Cheltenham. A missed opportunity.
December 29, 2010 at 12:16 #334134No no no no no to the King George being run at Cheltenham. Why don’t we just have every big race run there and be done with it?
December 31, 2010 at 01:15 #334371Would I be right in thinking that Southwell can pretty much race any time they like given that it’s basically just sand?
Not quite as cut and dried as that, I don’t think. Southwell clerk of the course Roderick Duncan is just massively proactive where harrowing the course non-stop day and night (if so required) is concerned, and I suspect Rolleston regular Maxilon will agree that Mr Duncan has played an absolute stormer again so far this winter. Freezing fog and course access have been the chief problems rather than an imperiled racing surface, if I remember correctly.
Likewise, if Market Rasen had been the last meeting standing for Boxing Day, I’m pretty sure they would’ve made the same noises that Fontwell made & with probably the same result.
I don’t. Lekha’s got more bloody sense than that!

Anyone watch Kempton last night? Did anyone see any sign of snow?
An absolute disgrace that Puchestown can rearrange theor meeting which was a raging success and Kempton can’t do the same thing.
Not one trainer or owner would have complained had they put it back to Wed Thus or Friday damn nonsense!!!
