Possibly one of the best evening cards I have ever seen and I think I shall go. Looks a nice betting card too, so hopefully should get some money for derby day!
May 29, 2008 at 10:24 #165802Almost certainly the best evening card theres been…
I was all for backing Royal and Regal but its odds on now. Huge money for it
Virtual has been backed too…and im pleased to have grabbed 7/2 early on
Brigadeer Gerard is tricky. Cant help think Lucarno will find this a bit short and theres a hint that hell need this. Pipedreamer is a threat but was Maraheels last run at Chester a real return to form? If so, then i think 8’s is fair enough
Im happy to avoid Happy boy and will pass Passage of time …
I liked Finjan’s last run and MT’s often improve a lot for a run
May 29, 2008 at 11:07 #165813Brigadier looks a very interesting race – can anyone explain to me why Hattan is 25/1? Clive Brittain has documented the amount of strengthening he has made prior to this season, apparanetly put a considerable amount of weight on in muscle tissue.
His 2L Winter Derby win against an ‘unlucky’ (read Nahoodh) Silver Pivotal (if the filly had run today she would have been a quarter of Hattans price – why?) was visually impressive 1st time out, but the run that really interests me was the 1/2l 2nd to Ask (levels) under similar conditions. If Ask was running today i would have thought he would have been favourite, or at the least a market leader.
May 29, 2008 at 11:19 #165815Agree with you Peruvian that Hattan looks overpriced at 25’s having said that I’ve just got 32 to a small stake on BF. Although the 7.2 a place is probably more realistic as I think Pipedreamer will take the race.
A forecast combination on the pair looks a good investment though.

Moynahan (2nd-fav) is a NR
May 29, 2008 at 11:51 #165822Regime 1/2 the price of Hattan on the back of winning a head in Ireland from a horse who hasn’t won a race except his Maiden. Am baffled.
May 29, 2008 at 12:20 #165824Looks a lively card right enough. Have backed a small stake on Fazbee in the 2yo Listed race. In the Brigadier Gerard, Happy Boy has a lot going against him. Is returning from injury, has travelled from Brazil to Dubai and then on to Britain in the last five months and has also changed stables. If he wins he could be very good but if not would definitely not write off yet. In the 3yo mile race it’s a shame Moynahan as a non-runner. You have the unknown potential of Virtual and Khateeb and the consistency of Redolent. I like Iguazu Falls and he’s expected to have come on enormously from his first run (where the horse box broke down on the way to Doncaster) but i’m worried about the uphill finish over Sandowns mile, especially in the soft ground and his ability to see it out – especially if he is keen again. Races to watch and Sky+ rather than get heavily involved in for me.
May 29, 2008 at 12:22 #165825Peppertree Lane in the 2m race for me.
May 29, 2008 at 12:29 #165826Just had a good look at the Henry II. A few things concern me about R&R at the price. The worst run form wise of his last 4 runs was in similar conditions to tonights at Newmarket in October. He only beat BN 1.5 lgths in a very slow race yet BN is 10/1 on BF for tonights race. Also the unfathomable Geordieland beat him in another slow race last time. Yes he has the best recent form but the price at this trip is very very skinny.
Unfortunately very difficult to be very sure about what can beat him. Allegretto will probably need the run and I’m not sure about the ground plus his run in the Prix Royal Oak looks very average formwise. PL and Finalmente look Group 3 horses, SC, ETM, handicappers and DeKocks would have to find a lot from his Longchamp Run.
That leaves Balkan Knight. He ran very well in this race last year, his 2 runs this year were over distances too short and the Newmarket form behind R&R is not reflected in the price. A 5/2 – 3/1 the place on BF would be a value bet, although he’s shorter than that at present. Damn BF place markets are way too efficient.
May 29, 2008 at 12:30 #165827I think Royal And Regal has to be a lay at this price.
He was only beaten a head last time; but by Geordieland(!), not Yeats, so it’s not that great form. And he had a hard enough race.
May 29, 2008 at 12:48 #165829Have to agree about Hattan. 35/1 now on the exchanges…
May 29, 2008 at 14:06 #165836Excellent card i have to say.
Will be interesting to see how Punjabi gets on.
May 29, 2008 at 15:08 #165841Def the best evening card I have ever seen.
I missed Punjabi last time out at 2/1…he could rack up a sequence.

May 29, 2008 at 15:59 #165842Excellent Sandown card and the field sizes are of both quality and quantity.
14 in the Gerard Stakes is amazing when you consider that the Corrie Cup next week will probably have half the field size or less.
Would love to see the Seargent bounce back but i think it is time for him to be demobbed.
Pipedreamer is full of imrovement but dont rule out the Godolphin horse who should relish the step up in trip and the ease in the ground.
BHB take note this is what an evening card should be.
May 29, 2008 at 16:06 #165844I can’t see anything being good enough to beat Royal And Regal but not confident enough in his ability to make evens a backable price.
May 29, 2008 at 16:08 #165845I reckon when North Light got turned over by a filly (who’s name escapes me) in the Brigadier the Temple was run on the same evening card, that was a proper evenings racing.
Why does the Temple get switched around, has it got a "proper home" (excuse my ignorance)?
May 29, 2008 at 17:15 #165853What I think we have here is how Sandown wants its late May portfolio of meetings to be, i.e. boiled down to one meeting on the Thursday night.
Last year it still raced on the Tuesday night of this week, but it has been looking to offload / swap that fixture for a while now, hence the action at Huntingdon instead.
Additionally, the Carlisle meeting on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon was actually one of Sandown’s as well until 2006, but this too was given up because – if memory serves – good horses, good crowds and good prizemoney were being spread a bit too thinly over three meetings inside four days for the course executive’s liking.
