In a four horse race, if tracking the pace Altior will – you could say – be “held up”.
Suspect Saint Calvodos will lead, Un De Sceau next, with Altior and Sceau Royal disputing last/3rd.
Altior hits flat spots mostly when unable to get a clear view of his fences, so I agree wouldn’t like a tightly packed field with him on the inside. Some horses also don’t seem to like rain and/or seem contented to follow horses during a downpour.

Class on any ground – surely only injury stops him

Didn’t look like he was hitting flat spots there..it looked like he was cruising. What a horse.

Great race to watch, marvellous jumping by both Altior and Un de Sceaux. I reckon a career best performance by both horses considering how far clear they were of the other two who are class horses too.

Using Saint Calvados as a good benchmark of 158, I would rate UDS at 173 and Altior at 177 as a result of that. Both career best marks. Great race to watch

Wonderful racehorse. I feel privileged to be around at the same time as he is.

How far would he win a King George?

Doubtful the other two handled the ground in any way shape or form as they were beaten before they got near the Pond Fence. Not sure how you rate the fiirst two on that basis.

Although Nicko didn’t use his stick, Altior looked pretty tired in the winners enclosure afterwards and that would have taken quite a bit out of him – assume next stop the Game Spirit in Feb and then Cheltenham.

UDS ran his heart out but at 10 rising 11 I think old father time (in passing) may have just had a quick word in his shell like and I think he is now slightly on a downward curve from his very peak years – however, another G1 (a possible 10th) and a 3rd straight Clarence House win at Ascot next month is most likely.

Interesting that either they must have went at it from quite a way out and/or that rain really got into the ground quickly as they ended up being almost 4sec slower than the novices.

2 lengths, ahead of Enable and Sea of Class.

Ground would definitely have been more cut up and the wind and rain would really have slowed them down too, and the novices were all carrying 5pounds less. Not surprising.

No guarantee he would stay 3m – remember Hendo’s Remittance Man (who won a Champion Chase but excelled at 2m4f) tried it and turning in looked all over the winner and then just didn’t get home.

Injury permitting we could be looking at a horse capable of winning 3 or even a historic 4 QMCC so why bother about going up in trip when you don’t have to.

The record of crack 2-milers going up in distance is not good, from Remittance man to Sizing Europe to Azertuiop; Kauto Star the obvious exception. But it should be worth trying, because 3-mile chasing is more competitive, more prestigious and more lucrative; 2-mile chasing slightly behind 2-mile hurdling in prestige and prize money. Perhaps horse show something at home that convinces the trainer they won’t stay; wondered why Moscow Flyer was never tried at 3 miles.

But this is speculation; what a spectacular race!!! The best since Moscow Flyer/Azert/Well Chief. Evn if UDS can’t be improving at his age, I’ve never seen him jump better. Once Altior puts the hammer down he really is something to see
