Morning all, especially to Pete, Mike And Crizzy, apologies again if i have left anyone out.

Well thanks in main to the exploits of Fred Funk i managed to escape with a profit last week so i will have to do the Funky Gibbon more often .

I see that Pete and Mike were a tad unfortunate in that they caught a tartar along with most others with Henrik Stenson unless of course you backed Martin Kaymer, for about half an hour on Sunday i thought Henrik was going to do it, but in the end fair play to Martin because until his little misdemeanours he had burned it up.

So onto this week and first port of call will be the BUICK INVITATIONAL, can the mighty one get beat, personally i think not but at the price you know i will not be partaking.

Stepping up to the plate here will be Jim Furyk,Tim Clark,at the prices can’t resist a small investment on JJ Henry, but my main focus for this will be on Hunter Mahan who i’m sure Pete and Mike were probably expecting me to put forward :).

Moving on to the QATAR MASTERS and at first glance a re run of last week.

So what do we take from ABU DHABI, well obviously the first three will be fancying there chances again, Can Martin Kaymer repeat his antics i personally think not, whilst not suggesting he can’t go in again i will be looking elswhere.

First up i have to apologies to Pete and Mike as i will be jumping aboard the Henrik Stenson bandwagon this week so i will be more than happy to take the rap should he come up short :).

The supporting cast will consist of Anders Hansen and this weeks interesting one Scott Verplank i am intrigued that he has come over for this.

Next up is the TURTLE BAY C’SHIP, Freddy i’m afraid is a tad short for me this week Bernhard not much better so i will have an E/W on Mark Mcnulty more in hope than anything else.

Well That’s all from me for now thank god i here you cry.

Catch you all later as the day job beckons.

    CHeers for now.

Well done again last week Adrian and I hope your main hope in the Buick wins this week :)

This week’s golf is the best of the year so far in my opinion. I like the early season gulf events on the euro tour. This week it’s the Qatar masters which can often be played in windy conditions. It will be the first event of the year for Sergio Garcia who has had a rest from golf and it will be interesting to see how he plays.

My first choice is Richard Green. He lost his form at the end of last season but had previously played some good golf when winning in Vienna & finishing 4th in the British Open. Last week he showed a sign of a return to his best when finishing 17th in Abu Dhabi and his round of 66 on the sunday was the best of the day. He has played well at this event in the past and finished 4th last year and 3rd in 2005. Looks value at 35’s imo.

I have resisted betting on my jinx player Adam Scott for a while but I’m giving him another chance this week. He has not played in this event since winning it in 2002. He played reasonably well last week in his first tournament of the season but his putting was not good enough. I am hoping he can return to winning ways as he often plays good at courses where he has previously performed well.

Martin Kaymer won last week and there is no reason why he cannot win again if in the same mood but I am hoping for a good performance from another young potential star in the name of Rory Mcilroy who improved each day in last week’s event at Abu Dhabi.

Over in the USA, Tiger Woods makes his first appearance of the year at the Buick Invitational which he has won in previous years. This event takes place in San Diego which is a city I visited many years ago………it has a wonderful zoo but I did not see Tiger there :)

Tiger will probably win and his chances of doing so have increased with the news that Phil Mickelson is not well at the moment. Tiger’s odds are much too short for my style of betting though so my money is on Hunter Mahan who finished excellently in Hawaii a fortnight ago. I’ll also have a bet on Geoff Ogilvy who has not won since his victory in the 2006 US Open but is a good player and he may be due a win. My other bet is on Brett Snedeker who was voted pga rookie of the year for 2007 and finished 3rd at this event last year.

    Good luck.

    In Qatar I’ts……
    Westwood 12’s ish
    and Wall 80’s ish EW
and Jimenez 33’s ish (must be mad  )
Now a couple of quid on Webster at 66’s ew (jumped out at me!!)
    Sometimes you just gotta stick with’em… er… I think…

    Buick….
Just Choi 28’s and Weir 40’s bit of ew fun :?

Got to say I’m right in to the golf at the moment. Big prices and if you get a run for your money which I did the other week, great entertainment. Load of old bo…ks if they all miss the cut though!

Hi Adrian, Pete and Crizzy – and anyone who adds to this thread after me.

Well done Adrian on last weeks winner. I reckon Fred Funk could be well worth following in the Seniors, and as long as the likes of Langer is in the field, then the price about Funk should be decent. He often contends in regular tour events, so playing in the Seniors is a bit like stepping back from a group race to a seller :D .

    Qatar Masters

As Adrian said, the first name that sticks out like a sore thumb is Scott Verplank (36 win, 7.5 top five) and as I’ve backed him the last twice he has played in American, I can’t desert him her (that’s desert as in ‘leave’ not desert as in what the golfers are playing in  ). Verplank has never played in Europe before (other than Majors and WC events) so I wonder what the significance is in him coming over this week – perhaps a huge appearance cheque was the incentive :D

Henrik Stenson showed that his golf is in order last week, and as a previous winner of this even he should go well. But he is not for me this week at those odds, so my second selection is Nick Dougherty (38 win, 8.6 top five). Tied 50th last week is not ideal form, but at least he got four rounds in which I think will be a benefit to Nick. The last three times he has played in this tournament he has finished in the top 20 (haven’t lookey beyond the last three years), and I believe Nick to be a much improved golfer over the last 12 months.

I would be gutted if Colin Montgomerie (70 win, 12.5 top five) won without me backing him so until he shows that he is well out of form then I will be following him. There was enough encouragement last week to suggest he is ready to hit top form, and I can’t believe his odds are twice as big this week in arguably a slightly weaker field. One word of caution though is that Monty hasn’t played in this tournament for a while, citing the course lay-out not suiting him as his reasons – but those odds are just too tempting.

    Buick Invitational

With Tiger in the field, it’s imperative that we look at the ‘Top Five’ and ‘Winner w/o Woods’ markets on Betfair, though I will also quote odds for the outright win. Tiger probably will win, but he won’t be carrying any of my money at those amazingly cramped odds.

KJ Choi (34 win, 7.6 top five, 19 w/o Woods) did me a massive favour a few weeks back, and as I’ve said before, there aren’t many players who can go on a birdy streak like KJ when he is in the groove. I simply have to play up some of my winnings on him, though most of it will be in the ‘top five’ market.

As a multiple winner of this tournament, it would be foolish of me not to give Phil Mickelson a mention, and therefore a chance (18.5 win, 3.8 top five, 10 w/o Woods) – though my main bet here would be in the winner without Woods market. Quite simply, if Tiger is near his best he wins, and in a tournament he loves winning, there sholdn’t really be any reason to suggest Tiger won’t be close to peak form.

I think both Stewart Cink (120 win, 15 top five, 65 w/o Woods) and Lucas Glover (250 win, 20 top five, 95 w/o Woods) are players I would be interested in this week. However, please be aware that I will be swerving the ‘top five’ market for these players as odds of 15 and 20 for a place against odds of 120 and 250 for the win is ridiculous. So it’s just a few quid in the win market and a few quid in the market without Woods. I will be backing each player each way with a High Street bookies however, at odds of 80/1 (Cink) and 125/1 (Glover) at 1/4 the odds a place 1,2,3,4,5.

So that’s it from me guys – here’s hoping that Tiger gets cramp in his arms for four days and can’t swing a club accurately (presuming nobody has backed him that is :D ) and one of us can get a winner or two.

    Good luck all,

    Mike

    Buick Invitational

3 ball betting – Selection Brett Wetterich best priced 9/4 @ PaddyPower

This guys a big hitter and needs everthing to go right.
Last Season hit a first round 70,could possibly improve on that.
The other two players that make up this 3-ball are,
    Stephen Ames
They say hes an improved player, but last years stats he averaged 276yards with the driver which gave him a very low ranking of 142nd,he missed the Buick in 2007 which was no surprise as he hit 73 in 2004 a 75 in 2005 and 77 in 2006.
    Tom Lehman
Is not the player he once was,he did finish 2nd in 2005 and opened with a 62,but hes left that form well behind with an opening round of 74 in 2006 and a opening round of 75 in 2007,hes form is generally deteriorating with every season.

If Wetterich can keep on the fairway he could take this 3 ball easily.[/b]

Did we really expect anything different?

Tiger four shots clear at the halfway stage  . That’s why I thought it was important to refer to the market without Woods. The gulf between him and the rest is actually getting bigger don’t you think? I never thought in my lifetime I would see a full field golf tournament with the favourite at Even money, but that’s what he was and he is showing us why.

Anyway, I’ve got Cink e/w at 80/1 and Cink in the ‘Without Woods’ market (got matched at 60 and 55) so I’ve still got a lot riding on this event.

Overr in Europe, it’s far more difficult to call, and I’m happy with my win bets and ‘top five finish’ bets on Monty and Dougherty. Shame about Verplank

We’ve all still got something to shout for. Crizzy, good luck with Westwood, he’s in a great position, as is Stenson for Adrian. Good luck also to Pete who has Mahan (so does Adrian) and McIlroy (hope you backed them e/w) in with each way shouts.

Does anyone bet in running on golf, if so, what’s your strategy. I only have bets in running if all my selections are down and out and I want some interest – or sometimes I will lay a golfer at much shorter odds (if he is doing well) if I have backed him at much bigger odds – though I never get the maths right

Hi Mike – Cink still has a chance of finishing 2nd and big Phil is coming with a late run. I think Mahan’s chance has gone unfortunately. I am wondering if Tiger will be odds on in Dubai next week?

About 10 players still have a chance in Qatar including my jinx player Adam Scott but he rarely shoots 2 low scores on consecutive days. I think Stenson has the best chance of winning now.

I rarely bet in running on players to win in the golf. I do lay my stake or more off on one of my selections in the unusual event that they have a decent chance of winning and their odds get short. I do this to ensure a profit but I always make sure that I win about 3 times more if my selection does win. I also sometimes lay the leading player at short odds if I have doubts that the player will win.

    Good luck tomorrow

    Pete

Hi guys good stuff as usual with SwallowCottage highlighting Adam Scott in the Qatar event, and MikkyMo73 for Stewart Cink who goes into the last round lying second in the Buick.

Anyway one more bet in the 3-balls for me as my other lost.
Vijah Singh @ Evens to beat Shigeki Maruyama and Frank Lickliter II.

I see Vijay Singh as a strong finisher here, and cant say that of hes two opponents in this 3 ball,so im quietly confident here.

Cheers Cockney and I am extremely happy that I have at long last managed to back Scott when he has won – he played some of the best golf I have ever seen today. Good luck with your bet on Singh and a price of evens does seem a good price – one thing about VJ is that he never stops trying.
Also good luck to Mike with Cink – I can’t win now in the USA so I will be cheering for Cink now to finish 2nd.

Hi all, sorry a bit late on parade today, had to nip to St Neots this morning, have not long been back just flushed a Lager down much needed :), any excuse hey .

Well i see that a drum roll and nine gun salute is in order for PETE because at long last his Nemisis has obliged, even at the expense of me , only joking buddy, i don’t have and never will a problem with it :D or anyone else for that matter, just as long as we get some returns between us.

I think now we should all meet in London at the Racing Post office and formally apply for Chappers and Co’s jobs, i think we could do it very well.

    Will be back later.

    Cheers for now.

Well done Pete, great result mate.

Apologies to Adrian, at this moment in time, I don’t know how your selections went (other than the European and PGA ones) – so fingers crossed at least one obliged for you.

As for me, well it was so close but so far. As you know I backed Cink each way at 80’s so I just about broke even on the week – but believe me, if Monty, Dougherty and Cink had finished just one or two places higher I was looking at my best ever week.

I had Monty and Dougherty to finish top five for good money (they finished 6th and 7th respectively) and I had Cink to finish first without Woods at 60’s and 55’s – he finished 2nd (without Woods) but at least I collected on my e/w bet. I’m putting Cink’s final round performance down to the "playing in the final group with Woods syndrome" – where Woods just appears to scare everyone to death, making them shoot over par lol.

Some great selections on these threads, so a massive well done to all. Even our losing bets, like Cink today, Stenson this week and last week etc, are great profits if you follow us each way.

Keep up the great work guys…… here’s looking forward to next week where you just know I will be opposing Woods – I don’t think the Europeans fear him as much as the Americans do.
