I’m very tempted to back this Nichols favourite (11/8) but the Alan King trained 2nd favourite is a worry which is making its hurdles debut and is 15/8! Wayne Hutchinson chooses this fellow over the other King runner who came 2nd on his only hurdles start earlier this month. But maybe he just wants to get to know the horse for some later season handicap target?

The Nichols horse does look good, won 3 on the trot (the last 2 very easily) but all those races were this month and will the 4th in as many weeks be a bridge too far? Doesn’t look like it going by his win last time out, he does give weight away all round though.

Brian Ellison trains the 3rd favourite but to me is a complete unknown.

Is it worth backing the favourite? Or are there just too many unknowns regarding the main market rivals for it to be worth getting stuck in? You’d have thought Nichols wouldn’t be sending his horse here if he thought it didn’t have a great chance, but often you never know how fit a horse is until that final furlong or two and I’ve seen King win these sort of races before with hurdle newcomers.

Maybe worth waiting until half an hour or so before the off to see what the market makes of these unexposed ones, does King often back these types early? Annoying when a horse like the 2nd favourite drifts – giving you confidence in the fav – only to have the 2nd fav bolt up, it’s tricky to know when to believe/follow the market sometimes.

    Decisions decisions!

That is more than likely the wise move, just frustrating when you watch the fav win these kind of races, I actually made a profit last year backing these sort of 6/4 favourites who’ve won impressively over hurdles at least twice going up against horses that haven’t shown anything in juvenile/novice hurdles. You do get caught out every now and again though and it’s a bit of a guessing game as to when that’ll happen.

Master Blueyes is in the King list of horses to follow, whereas his other horse isn’t [likewise the Nicholls horse, although PN has so many horses I guess they can’t list them all]. The interesting thing is why AK has the two horses in the race. I’ve backed [as usual] the 80/1 shot; may fight it out with VTC’s horse [in my dreams…]. Wish I was at Uttoxeter today though; cracking card there.

    Cliffs of Dover for me
Had the horse the last twice and Nicholls has them running well enough
