Don’t forget that RTE Radio broadcast commentaries of all the Cheltenham races – very handy for the last two races once C4 has gone off air.
In the west of the UK you get a really good signal on 252 long wave – I think Tony O’Hehir does the calling. As for Des Scahill, he wasn’t always jaded, as this link shows:

28 runner hurdles where the commentary consists of a monotonic delivery reciting all horses lead to tail then back to the lead again. There was an audible sigh half way through the commentary at Naas recently. Very accurate but very deadpan.
I think he can do quite a bit of belching during a race grey dolphin and don’t forget "Lost one there" but no name of horse quite frequently.

Did you read the Racing Post interview with him part-way through last year? In so far as it was a tacit admission that the job bores him pretty much all of the time now, it made for a depressing read – not just for those that listen to him on course and on the telly, but also for those more willing than he who would give their eye teeth for a job like that.
Jerry Hannon has long since surpassed him as the best Rules commentator in Ireland, I’d suggest.

March 5, 2008 at 10:29 #148547Not sure if it was cattermole again but when Pilca won the handicap a few few weeks ago on channel 4 racing, they were calling the wrong name until late up the run in. Cant remember who they were calling it though. Think it may have been cattermole commentating though.
That was Graham Goode, trying to remember what he called it now but it was definitely the wrong name he called until after it jumped the last.

Didn’t shine though when he called a finish a circuit early a few weeks ago
Would have Peter O’Hehir at the top of the tree in Ireland.March 5, 2008 at 11:39 #148564Did he? That’s very out of character. Naughty Jerry!
I find Peter’s delivery a little too soporific in comparison for my tastes, maybe a bit too like Father Austin Purcell in Father Ted.

Think the beast was called Picea, a horse Michael Jarvis trained about 20 years ago.

Would have Peter O’Hehir at the top of the tree in Ireland.Thats rather unfair- I think everybody thought that was the finish of the race. Jerry is certainly better than Peter, and better than Dessie most of the time.
March 10, 2008 at 11:31 #149424I can confirm that John Hunt is Commentating on Radio 5 for the Cheltenham Festival.
I heard Matt Chapman saying this morning on ATR that John will be doing the Commentary on Radio 5 so if your Driving on the road you will be able to hear the Live Commentary for the Gold Cup.John is starting to discuss & read the Racing News & Racing Review on a morning a fair bit now on ATR.
