Like people have said on here before, he’d not have stayed in the business for so many years is he was as rubbish as everyone says.
GG’s been doing it a long time Kautostar1
February 18, 2008 at 18:21 #144532If Thommo is to do a Cheltenham commentary then perhaps it is the 3 day April meeting at which he could be used.
For the festival it will be i imagine Simon Holt for C4, Richard Hoiles,Mark Johnson and Mike Cattermole for the course and betting shops and John Hunt for 5 Live.
I have nothing against Thommo as he can make a really poor days racing at Southwell sound exciting and his Fakenham commentaries are always lively and he sounds enthusiastic and is much more a commentator suited to a fun crowd who need jollying up.
Personally im surprized that Stewart Machin has not been given a day to do at the festival as he does big field races quite well.
February 18, 2008 at 19:52 #144542Is it possible to commentate on a 2M hurdle without naming a single horse? We may find out on March 11th …….
Unless there’s one named ‘Big Fella’, that may turn out to be the case…
February 18, 2008 at 20:12 #144544On a much less serious, silly note. Whilst reading this thread I thought how funny it would be to have a red button you could press (like with Sky football) where you could listen to a Fanzone. Take for example in the GC. A fan of Denman in a booth along side a fan of Kauto Star giving their opinions as the race developed. Would be hillarious (unless one of them fell or PU I suppose). A cr*p idea possibly but it just crossed my mind and I would prefer that to Thommo!
February 18, 2008 at 21:08 #144556The mute button is preferable to Thompson.
I now realise why I don’t like watching racing from Fakenham, Towcester of Friday evenings at Newmarket!
February 18, 2008 at 21:10 #144558Like people have said on here before, he’d not have stayed in the business for so many years is he was as rubbish as everyone says. Give him a break for once.
If longevity’s a sign of talent how come Cliff Richard?

That made me laugh.. Everyone is a big fella to Thommo ho ho ho.. I’d prefer him on C4.. Better than any of their other "roving" reporters..
February 18, 2008 at 21:32 #144563I now realise why I don’t like watching racing from Fakenham,
Ach, worry not, he’s only there twice a year on average! Iain Mackenzie, JA McGrath and – curiously, given the rest of his portfolio – Dave Smith have tended to farm the rest of the meetings latterly.

February 18, 2008 at 22:12 #144573I can understand Iain Mackenzie doing Fakenham as i have never heard him do a flat commentary apart from bumpers at jump meetings but to me Dave Smith rarely does jump meetings apart from the odd one at Plumpton,Lingfield,Fakenham and Folkestone alothough i was at Uttoxeter once when he was calling them.

Go far back enough in time and you’ll have found Iain doing the odd stint at Yarmouth and Southwell AW, but I think he went all-jumps when summer jumping came in.
The aforementioned Thommo has already had an itinerant 2008 – Taunton and Wincanton were rare stopping-off points for him last month.

February 18, 2008 at 23:42 #144590Hey, don’t knock Tommo!
I’ve been in receipt of the "how does it feel" question when Katchit won the Triumph last year – very appropriate question and enjoyable
He’s even given great commentary on Zilcash winning crap hurdles at Aintree in May… what’s not to like?
February 18, 2008 at 23:58 #144592Simon Holt will be otherwise engaged, doing the commentaries on Ch4.
Apologies, I had assumed because I’d heard CH4 & racecourse commentaries clash before that the same could possibly be case at the festival. Is there a reason beyond surplus staff as to why in this particular instance this does not happen?
February 19, 2008 at 00:03 #144593I am genuinely stunned by people who I would mainly feel are sensible (I will excuse Zoso this honour) thinking that "Thommo" is acceptable in any form in racing.
Insincere, glib, immature, clueless – just the first four words (avoiding expletives) that come to mind.
And as for his commentaries…well, AP has said it all. Commentating by numbers.
February 19, 2008 at 05:58 #144604I can’t tolerate Thommo’s vox pop interviews, racing around the punters like a mad march hare, but I do like his laid back light hearted, people friendly commentaries on low grade races at Wolves etc. where the racing is only a bit of fun to be honest, and he gets into the spirit of the thing.
He’s far too light weight for Cheletenham though! That would be a disaster.February 19, 2008 at 08:13 #144613if it wasn’t for the fact that ap’s ‘thommo’ commentary didn’t include getting the faller wrong and causing havoc on betfair, i’d have sworn ap is thommo
nice commo, ap

Ch4 take the racecourse commentary when they are doing more than one meeting, because they also take the racecourse pictures in those circumstances – i.e. they broadcast the same Racetech coverage that goes into the shops and to ATR and RUK.
But at the main meeting, they have their own cameras and use their own commentator to ensure that the commentary matches the pictures they are showing. For example, Ch4 at Cheltenham will undoubtedly make use of the pictures from the camera car, whereas RUK will rarely use those and will stick with the wider angle provided by the Racetech fixed cameras.

February 19, 2008 at 10:27 #144636Katchit,
The problem with the question ‘how does it feel’ is that
a) most of the audience don’t give a monkeys
b) those of this that do can make an accurate guess how you feel
c) as a winning owner in the immediate aftermath of a race, you are highly unlikely to give a coherent and interesting answer anyway
