First, the trivia:
Emma Spencer looks less stickly in real life than she does on the telly, Nick Luck likes a crafty fag & Lester Piggot can’t be approached for an autograph directly unless you ask his minders.
Anyway, my serious point is this:
All the talk saying that big races shouldn’t be focused on a Saturday because racing can’t compete with other sports is absolute rubbish.
Within 30 miles of Haydock, Manchester City at home (on Sky), Liverpool at home, Blackpool vs Blackburn & Wigan (rugby league) in the Super League Semi Final.
Yet Haydock was heaving & Chester was too. Get the right weather & racing can compete with any sport you like. Don’t get the weather & it really doesn’t matter what day of the week it is.
On the fixture list, I have no complaints although I really don’t like twilight fixtures. If you work & you don’t get away in time to watch the daytime racing, what good does an evening meeting starting ten minutes later do you?
I also noticed today at Haydock the tannoy gave the results of what sounded like two stewards enquiries yet the ‘klaxons’ didn’t go off at the time. Is it really worth starting an enquiry knowing that you’re not going to ammend the result?
