You could have lived up to your name and asked for the best tracks. Or does handle ‘happy’ just cover up for a sad and lonely soul?
May 15, 2009 at 11:37 #227778CHESTER! God knows how the Romans got their chariots round there!
We have trouble getting just the horse around it! A hare and 6 greyhounds
would struggle! its a JOKE!May 15, 2009 at 11:44 #227781But APK, excluding the horse racing, on a warm, sunny day it has to be a very pretty place. Some of my most romantic days have been spent in Chester, if my memory still holds up that long ago.
KMay 15, 2009 at 14:03 #227818How fair is the Chester track on the horse’s welfare?

Why on earth would you think a horse’s welfare would be at risk?
May 15, 2009 at 14:31 #227829Tom, I think it’s called a dog-leg course.
May 15, 2009 at 15:04 #227834Salisbury, Hamilton, Windsor and Goodwood are other tracks that aren’t "circular".
May 15, 2009 at 15:17 #227839Catterick, it’s a dog track in disguise.
May 15, 2009 at 15:32 #227845I’ve never been to Bath Racecourse, but every report I’ve heard from people who have been there has been most uncomplimentary about the place. Busloads of drunken day-trippers; poor quality racing; over-priced nosh; a management that only seems interested in flogging foul lager at inflated prices ………. are some of the complaints.
May 15, 2009 at 15:34 #227846I once interviewed Stan Mellor as part of an A-Level geography project on the hierarchy of racecourses.
He told me that the four worst courses in the country began with the letter ‘F’:
Fontwell, Folkestone, Fakenham and ******* Plumpton!
May 15, 2009 at 16:04 #227855I think it may be the only track not laid out in a circular fashion. i.e the furthest you can go is abt1m4f starting at the top boundary of the track and the pull up area after the post is abt 200yds.
Newmarket; Epsom.
May 15, 2009 at 16:53 #227867Never been to Chester but it sounds nice. If we change to the best tracks in idyllic surroundings then my favourite would be Brighton on a summers afternoon. Fish and chips on the front, a pint and then the magnificent views from the track. I may be wrong, but am sure someone out there will let me know if I am but I think it may be the only track not laid out in a circular fashion. i.e the furthest you can go is abt1m4f starting at the top boundary of the track and the pull up area after the post is abt 200yds.
I find the racing there to be quite exciting and tend to follow runners who have run there before…, it is definitely ‘ horses for courses ‘ at BrightonMeasuring from the Multimap aerial photo I’d say the pull up distance is in excess of 500 yards. That’s over two furlongs so I reckon that’s enough to slow down in.
Many moons ago I think the track used to stretch to two miles as it started back from the current 1m 4f start.
