Never? perhaps I was not clear. He didn’t drink while he was there.I have learned not to trust gentlemen whether they drink or not.My sainted mother used to say gentlemen are just rogues with manners. Is a gentleman who don’t drink an Oxymoron? or something?

Well, the one I heard was: "Never eat at a place called Mom’s, never play cards with a guy called Doc, and never take up with a woman who has more problems than you."

Another old one I picked up from a crooked – as I found out later from a newspaper article) outfit I once worked for, and who claimed to be financial consultants, but were actually insurance brokers who weren’t exactly disinterested parties in the advice they gave. I was never able to sell a darned thing.

"Never trust a man who looks you straight in the eye, shakes your hand firmly and smokes a pipe."

Very obvious to anyone watching today that Rachel Greene has just ridden the worst ride you will possibly ever see on a racehorse.

Just incredibly how she is allowed to ride based on that. Feel sorry for connections.

Can everyone finally now admit Mike Smith made a mistake, but that’s all it was, Rachel’s efforts today prove that Mike Smith’s efforts on Zenyetta were miles off anything near the title of this topic.

I presume you’re talking about Cresswell Crusader, Joncol?

    It certainly was horrific.

It wasn’t the worse ride ever but very poor that nobody from ATR even questioned the ride. You could sense what was going to happen – horse doesn’t find as much as expected and Murphy strength makes difference.

The problem, stilvi, is what Green did (or rather didn’t do) between the final two hurdles.

Cresswell Crusader lost 2-3 lengths at the second-last due to a sloppy jump, but was soon upsides and travelling well after a light flick with the whip. At that point Green stopped riding, deciding instead to try and lob past one of the best horsemen in the game. The horse made another mistake at the last and lost all chance in the process, despite running on again when finally put under pressure.

It was an appalling ride, but no worse than those of either McCoy (Bellvano) or Geraghty (Surfing) in recent weeks.

I guess I’m just using this example to highlight how Mike Smith’s was actually way way way down the list of poor rides when compared to efforts like this today, and as pointed out we see it week in week out.

I would have to agree with you regarding ATR, Matt Chapman slated Mike Smith after the race and said Smith should apologise to everybody at Churchill Downs so why not Rachel Green? Why does the same rule not applied to her?? She should be made go to everyone at Lingfield today and apologise right Matt?

People got consumed with the occasion at the Breeders Cup and as such wrongly slated Smith imo calling it the worst ride ever when the fact remains we see way worse rides in the UK and Ireland on a weekly if not daily basis.

In fairness to Chapman he did bring the ride up and was none to complimentary, maybe you missed it..

I did see it, but in fairness theres a difference between bringing it up and asking Mike Smith to apologise to all present at Churchill Downs.

I almost feel that a lot of people including Chapman owe Mike Smith an apology for their over reaction.

If Chapman genuinely feels that Mike Smith should apologise to a racing crowd for a ride like that then surely Rachel Green should do the same yes/no?

Can’t be one rule for a Breeders Cup and one for a maiden hurdle at Lingfield….

A lot of people owe Smith an apology imo

Yes, apologies to Matt (didn’t really expect anything from McGrath/Bird) as although he didn’t appear to say anything straight after the race he did go back and offer his own criticism.

I watched this a couple of times and the first signs that she might get beat came just after she passed the eventual winner. She looked to be going much better and even took a long look round but when she gave him a couple of slaps down the shoulder to go on and take a few lengths out of TM’s mount but the horse never gained a yard.

The horse has won on heavy which seems odd but usually when a horse does that so far out it because he can’t pick up on the ground.maybe it was tacky who knows? but that horse wasn’t going to pick up and shoot clear no matter what she did, so she did what any pro would do and held him together with some gentle persuasion ……He’s still travelling better than the eventual winner so why upset the applecart?

Most jockeys would probably have done what she did and hold him together but a more experienced rider would have made damn sure he got the horse right at his hurdles and no doubt got a bit more out of the horse between the last 2 than she did…..Her biggest crime was she made a complete bollox of the last 2 by allowing the horse to jump when he wanted, when she should have been in control. Their own fault should have booked a real jockey.

You’d have to say she was to blame but that’s something all punters have to factor into their betting. I actually backed the horse but I’ve got no complaints..I thought she rode a brilliant race….mind you, that could be something to do with the fact I backed him on the machine for a place only

If you want to see a worse ride you don’t have to look far….go back and watch Tom Scudamore he made absolutely no effort at all to keep his horse in the race and deserved a ban for that ride. Granted from a punting point of view it made no difference but he was blatantly not trying a leg.

Just incredibly how she is allowed to ride based on that.

Being Anthony Honeyball’s other half and of the two of them running a Dorset training operation together probably has a little bit to do with it.

Facetiousness aside, she’s usually a bit better than today’s ride would suggest (19 winners under Rules at a strike-rate of 18%, plus a slew of Pointing victories), but it does seem a tad mystifying that she’d not been more assertive on a gelding she knows will keep going in bad ground – remember she sent him on over 3f out when the partnership won a heavy-ground Chepstow bumper a year ago.

Just plainly a very bad ride. Makes you feel sorry for actual jockeys who can’t get a mount when you see idiots like her today.

Jeremy the horse was travelling well at Chepstow and got there himself all she did was sit motionless and steer.

She did the same thing here only he didn’t pick up and the writing was on the wall she still might have race on her hands when she gave him two slaps down the shoulder and got ziltch in return.

He’s still travelling for her and she did the right thing IMO just made 2 jumping errors a better jockey most likely wouldn’t have.

Don’t forget she tried thee push and shove tactics in his previous race and he found nothing that day and just ran on at the one pace.
