…and maybe everynight.
Just in case you’ve missed it, ATR are showing TVG’s "The Works" programme tonight at 5PM, as a run up to the BC at Santa Anita.
Before every big event, TVG (American equivalent of ATR), show a daily morning programme from the track, where leading contenders strut their stuff on the training ground, like a live gallop report. Subscribers get sectional times, strategy, trainer interviews and selections.
A panel of talking heads usually including Simon Bray (ex-Henry Cecil staff), Frank Burns (Irish trainer) and Gary Stevens analyse each significant work.
I remember watching this every morning in the States before Barbaro’s epic Kentucky Derby win and was well impressed.
RUK subscribers will be surprised at what American cable viewers get for their subscription: It knocks RUK coverage – with its Pinky and Perky style banter by the paddock, endless replays and minimal editorial content – into a cocked hat.
November 1, 2009 at 16:05 #256576Any chance we might get this at some point in the future since TVG are owned by Betfair.
November 1, 2009 at 17:34 #256595Just watching it now.
Very informative. Especially like the observation regarding Fatal Bullet’s ‘figure of eight’ action.
Why can’t we have something like this on ATR / RUK?
Listening to Tom Amoss, the Yanks are up for it!! They want the bragging rights…Are we gonna let them?

It would be a logical step to fill some of the blank autumn and winter evenings on Timeform Radio with TVG coverage, for sure, though I’m not aware anything is in the offing in that regard as yet – will post further if it is.

November 1, 2009 at 22:53 #256673Watch this space for ‘The Works’ for BC.
November 3, 2009 at 12:28 #256881I have to agree with the original poster here. RUK could learn something from watching other channels.
TVG make an effort to big up major events – good to see Graham Cunningham on there the other day putting across the European point of view, his straight talking no nonsense style will be appreciated in the US.
ATR has it’s faults – but they at least try.
In my opinion, RUK with the far superior racing are incredibly lazy. Since programme editor Jim Ramsey left the post, the product has become stale and boring. Some of the RUK presenters are excellent (some are shocking!)and would rise to a challenge if handed to them.
Someone needs to stand up, take charge of the channel and think of their subscribers. At the moment, a rainy Catterick Wednesday looks exactly like Cheltenham Gold Cup day.
Keep posting your ideas for RUK – one day they might just try one!
But don’t hold your breath.
November 3, 2009 at 12:42 #256884Maybe they don’t have the funds or viewing figures to do other things. ATR get subsided by Sky. This allows them to appear on one of the Sky Sports channels every day, and run from 11 am, knowing they have a larger audience base. Maybe ESPN should hook up with RUk and do something similar…although perhaps RUK prefer the independant route after their mis-adventure with Sentanta ?
In saying that it can’t cost much to open up a phone in or to read out e-mails with a guest ?
I e-mailed RUK a while back suggesting they offer people an archive of all races, instead of just sevens days worth. I asked if they has anything up their sleeve, and some woman replied and said "don’t worry we have something up our sleeves". Months later their archives are worse than ever, and bookies firms took the initiative and offered free replays.
Maybe it’s a mix of a lack of invention and a lack of funds ?
November 4, 2009 at 00:34 #257009It’s a shame that HRTV is no longer shown in the UK. The Pursuit of the Cup show-which is the equivalent to The Works-is awesome
November 4, 2009 at 08:08 #257017I love this show and am glad that Frank Lyons is back on!
Pursuit of the Cup is great. You can also access the videos at The Blood Horse.

November 4, 2009 at 11:11 #257046I would agree that RUK has gone backwards since Jim Ramsey left.

November 5, 2009 at 20:23 #257307So what do members think, then? Did you like the show? Would it transfer? How can we adapt this format for our racing? Is it possible? Whether you like US racing or not, I think you’d have to agree that these guys have given the Breeders Cup a serious build up.
If Sean or Luke are reading, are there any plans for something like this for Royal Ascot next year on ATR?
Any RUK pundits reading? What about having a weeks worth of shows like this in the week before the Derby? Cheltenham? Champions Day?
November 6, 2009 at 11:12 #257399Per an earlier post, I heard one of my radio colleagues mention on Wednesday night that we will be taking TVG commentaries on the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday night at least, as we did in 2008.

November 6, 2009 at 12:49 #257414Thanks for that, GC.
Do you think there is mileage for this kind of thing in this country? Would, say, Henry Cecil allow cameras in to record and have work analysed the week before the Derby?

Kosei Miura’s arrival in the UK generated much interest in Japan. So much so, a Japanese TV crew were dispatched to Newmarket to send home news of the "teenage phenomenon".
From The Guardian…..
The Japanese teenager Kosei Miura makes his British debut at Ffos Las this afternoon when partnering Royal Diamond for Sir Mark Prescott. The 19-year-old, who has already ridden over 150 winners, has been riding work in Newmarket for the baronet and Clive Brittain since arriving in midweek. Such is his popularity that the jockey’s every move has been trailed by a TV crew from his homeland. But filming budgets are not what they once were in these troubled times and having been on the gallops on Miura’s first morning, the crew had switched to long-range shots from the nearest public road by the time he was in action the following day. Seemingly the £250 filming fee which a member of the Jockey Club Estates management team attempted to levy upon them was enough to prompt a rapid relocation.
Some way to go yet Max.
November 6, 2009 at 15:20 #257447Why am I not surprised, Cav.
November 6, 2009 at 20:16 #257492RUK broadcasting free to air on Sky 432 tonight from 2100 GMT if anyone wants to compare the two programmes (RUK v ATR).
