Is it me or is the walk back to the winner’s enclosure at Sandown Park particularly far? There’s an initial sharp incline to get off the course proper, then a winding uphill walk past the stands which seems to go on for ages, before a big drop back down to the enclosure. Conscious this could be at the conclusion of a 3M chase so it’s all relative however, I always have some sympathy for a horse at this time.
I can’t think of one but is there a course where the walk back is as far?
February 25, 2025 at 12:24 #1721357I am pretty certain that Cheltenham is quite a bit further (what with its long walkway that runs the length of the main stand just to get on/off the course – the horses tend to canter down it when going out onto the course) and then you still have a fair walk up the chute leading to the parade ring before you then have to walk right through the middle of the parade ring to the opposite end before dismounting.
February 25, 2025 at 13:49 #1721365I am not aware of the walk back at Sandown Park ever causing any problems.
The Rhododendron Walk is one of the best sights on a British racecourse. Spectators can often get a good, close up view of the horses on the walk from the paddock to the course.
The winners enclosure is perhaps the best in the country. It is like a small amphitheatre.

As for Sandown, it was just an observation that it seems quite a walk from the finishing line to the enclosure. Agreed though Cork All Star, it is picturesque.
