April 1, 2009 at 16:36 #219521A two horse race it should be but boy what a two horse race. I don’t envisage any problems with conditions for Denman but again some people are underestimating Exotic Dancer. There isn’t much between the two horses at peaks yes Exotic often loses but its usually to Kauto Star.
I think Denman will win. Aintree is a fast track and Denman can go one hell of a gallop. Exotic Dancer I think is better over a fraction shorter trip but he’ll stay Ok on this course.
Two points to take Fist up on :
1 Denman not liking the Cheltenham hill – That was on soft ground over an incredibly strongly run 3 1/4 miles where he did the donkey work. It was impossible for him to have been going away up that hill.
2 Two milers often don’t stay three miles at Aintree because they are running over a mile further a good percentage are bound not to stay.
April 1, 2009 at 23:21 #219570I shall be staying loyal to Albertas run as i feel we still haven"t seen the best of him!
April 2, 2009 at 06:43 #219628I’m not sure denman is backable in this. If he drifts then I don’t want to know him and if he’s supported he will be too short. An early double is the only option I guess but at this stage I see no certainty to double him with.
I’m convinced the only reason evens was available is the track.
I see PN reckons it won’t be a problem (that’s a worry)

I think he proved at Cheltenham there is more to Denman than this resolute galloper we know him to be.
Due t the fact PN feared he would blow up he ran a normal type of race with no attempt to force the pace. When you consider he beat Exotic Dancer fair and square without his major asset what is he going to do to him if reverting back to his old way? Even round Aintree you would have to think he can beat him.
We have horses like Alberta’s Run who might appreciate the faster conditions along with Pipes horse and PN 3rd string but they have as much as 50 lengths to make up on the big two.
This looks very much like a 2 horse race and there is no doubt in my mind which is the better horse. Air Force One would be my idea of an EW bet as he is a funny bugger and could end up running a big race.

April 2, 2009 at 17:50 #219721yes, very difficult race, but i hope so much, that ED finally gets head in front again. he deserves so much to win a race like the bowl. this must be one of the toughest and reliable horses in racing. and id be very happy for my friend jonjo too…
April 2, 2009 at 18:18 #219728Oh ye of blind faith
April 2, 2009 at 18:20 #219730Strange race. Denman looks very sore after that nasty fall. ED pulled too hard early on….again. Well done MDB….again!
April 2, 2009 at 18:23 #219731i do hope denman is ok i was willing him on, they just said it was bad cut now, hope its nothing else

April 2, 2009 at 18:23 #219732You have to say well done to Madison Du Berlais, they have let him do things his own way again, and he has run them into the ground.
April 2, 2009 at 18:28 #219735There are a few times in this sport when your heart sinks. That was one. Just wanted him to finish. Glad he’s not too badly injured.
(Did not have a bet, was a race to watch IMO)April 2, 2009 at 18:34 #219737My pre race concerns ( sadly) came to fruition. In my opinion, Denman was not suited by the course and I very much doubt whether he would have won had he stayed on his feet.
He is clearly not the horse he was. Glad he got up straightaway.

April 2, 2009 at 18:35 #219738Thank goodness he seems to be ok but the end of the road for the Sam Thomas/Denman partnership I would imagine. I have seen Denman step at fences like that before and get away with it…the Gold Cup always takes so much out of horses even if they appear fresh afterwards..look at Dessie all those years ago.
April 2, 2009 at 18:41 #219742You have to wonder what PN was thinking. Last year he tells Ruby to his annoyance to force the pace on Kauto and gets him beaten. This year it’s seems he gave Sam instructions to hold Denman up and give a Pipe horse a start.

To be fair I only listened to the race so far and have no idea whether Denman would have won or not. Any opinions on that?
April 2, 2009 at 18:42 #219744Like everyone else I’m just glad he got up. Hopefully he’ll be ok.

Difficult to say, Fists.
Madison Du Berlais was going well, but Denman was stride for stride with him, but Denman jumped into the fence rather than over it.
It would have been a very interesting finish, as Madison Du Berlais was very, very tired towards the end.
April 2, 2009 at 18:46 #219748Why are people saying Denman is not the horse he was?
Prior to his Gold Cup win Denman had NEVER run in a race as good as todays. Yes he was superb in the Gold Cup but they were conditions that played to his strengths. A track like Aintree was never going to suit him as well as Cheltenham does. I haven’t looked into it but I’d be willing to bet that Denman today would’ve run to a mark somewhere near to his best IF you take away last years Gold Cup. I don’t think its fair to say he’s not the horse he was judge him when he has conditions to suit. He was never really going today everything was just happening a bit quick for him.
Exotic Dancer ran his usual good race but didn’t settle great and didn’t jump great. Madison Du Berlais on a flat track at this trip is clearly a very, very good horse.
