I love this race and not just coz I’ve backed the winner for the last 3 years
It’s over the ‘big ones’ and they go one helluva clip. Trends are quite strong especially with weight and ORs, sadly they say Always Waining cannot win but at 12s he could be worth an EW bet BUT they want to try him in the National which is a shame as he has no hope of getting home!
So first place to look is last years race as that’s the best form, placed were Chance du Roy but his OR is now too high but I’ve taken a chance and backed him to win. Third was Fistral Beach but he has not been seen since but does win FTO and jumps well now, if he goes he wins IMO. Out the back we had Tartak who at 20s is too big.
Finally, if it comes up soft (not normally but the weathers been that bad who knows), White Star Line keeps threatening to win a good race
Good luck all who play
March 24, 2013 at 20:43 #433974I quite like Planet Of Sound, (EW) at 33/1 with Paddy but in last year’s national, looked like he took to the course, this shorter distance could be just right for him.
March 24, 2013 at 22:09 #433978I would like to see Big Fella Thanks swerve the National and come for this, doesn’t stay 4m4f despite some brave efforts, think he has the beating if Always Waining at this trip, think 2m4f is his ideal trip than the 4m4f.
March 25, 2013 at 16:49 #434011White Star Line is an interesting entry and one of the few to leap off the page to me at first look. I will be even more keen if Denis O’Regan gets the ride instead of B. Cooper.
March 25, 2013 at 18:16 #434012McCain’s Dunowen Point has excited me for years. Have always fancied him for the National one day, but at this stage in his careed; The Topham seems the perfect race for him.
March 31, 2013 at 08:04 #434513I am with Red Rum’s selection here – Planet Of Sound @ 33/1 with B365.
Lightly raced for his years, ran a nice pipe opener at Cheltenham, not knocked about and dropped 3lbs. from his National weight since.
Connections had stated the big race was their target (Daily Telegraph) but the decision to switch to the Topham with the change of mark interests me greatly.March 31, 2013 at 20:50 #434627Very happy with my prices, Chance du Roy backed into 10s and less from 16s, I got a nice EW bet on Tartak at 25s and the money has really come as he’s down to 14s and less but I’m surprised my main fancy Fistral Beach has remained at 16ss, I’m sure this is his race and hope to see the money arrive soon

Fistral ran ok last year but ran a bit of a stinker in the 2011 Topham how he’ll do again is anyones guess.I’m a big Tartak fan but to me he didn’t seem to enjoy it last year .
April 2, 2013 at 17:50 #434812I like Little Josh, won around here, generally is a good jumper and a front runner, the perfect tonic for the Topham.
Pacha du Polder is my other fancy, won well LTO and has more to offer.
April 7, 2013 at 19:58 #435747Love this race and been very lucky with my wagers in it too. Always Waining is a star and I’ve backed him each time to do the business. With him defecting to the National I spotted up the Nicky Henderson plot job.
My run has to end. I just wish I had as much luck with the big one itself!

What a terrible shame, RIP.
