The new racing/sports newspaper The Sportsman is published wed 22 March.
Im going to give them a chance and will be buying it.
Anyone else thinking of buying it or staying with the Racing Post?
I would not want to be buying 2 racing papers a day though.
March 21, 2006 at 08:34 #70383Isn’t the Post going to be producing a slimmed down version during the week for a reduced fee of 50p? That might appeal to those who just want the cards and form without the tedious editorial.
I’ll be buying the Sportsman (unless we get it at work which is possible); competition has got to be a good thing, so I’ll do my bit for progress.
March 21, 2006 at 09:48 #70384Rarely buy any racing papers but I’ll give The Sportsman a gander tomorrow. It’ll be added to my collection of first editions.
Keen to see who they’ve recruited and just how much coverage Racing will be getting.
March 21, 2006 at 11:28 #70385A visit to thesportsman.com is very revealing. It’s a sports paper not a racing papaer.
March 21, 2006 at 12:56 #70386didn’t you get that from the title fsl?
March 21, 2006 at 13:47 #70388Yeah, it has all sports. I’ll buy it tomorrow to see if it’s good, and take it from there. But i certainly won’t abandon the RP.
March 21, 2006 at 17:23 #70389Sorry that was a very unclear post by me DJ. What i meant was i expected to see a racing cover but instead its got a football manager. It seems like racing is an unfortunate but necessary addition they have made to the paper to steal custom of the racing post. If Timmy Murphy is their best inside writer for racing I’m getting worried.
March 21, 2006 at 17:28 #70391The editorial will change to suit the story of the day ~ not exactly great racing at the moment, is it? There are plenty of decent racing journalists on the payroll so expect the sport of kings to be well represented.

Thas a good idea rory
I will buy the Sportsman to have a look but probably have more of the sports I don’t get involved in. Good to see another publication coming out on the betting front.
Any idea what the price is??

March 21, 2006 at 19:35 #70395It has been just annouced that Kieron Fallon will be writing for the Sportsman
March 21, 2006 at 19:47 #70396Sportsman £1 weekdays £1.20 weekends
March 21, 2006 at 19:55 #70397I remain unconvinced that there is a any kind of market for a sports betting daily and even more unconvinced that there is an appetite for one called the Sportsman – Punter Daily perhaps  As mad as March Hares, methinks !
What do the TV Adverts look like on the website ? Can’t download them. Are they like something out of The Sweeney ?
http://www.thesportsman.co.uk/
March 21, 2006 at 20:14 #70398I’ll certainly buy it for the first few weeks but only for its racing content. I wouldn’t expect to buy both papers on a daily basis in the long run. The Post is clearly in pole position as far as I’m concerned but I’ve an open mind and Lydia Hislop’s comments about the results section were interesting.
March 22, 2006 at 08:31 #70399Got edition one, and while I’m not impressed by the layout or print quality, the results section in particular looks very interesting at first glance.
March 22, 2006 at 08:56 #70400It’s better than I thought, but feel large parts of the paper seem to be looking to attract tabloid reading folk.
Alan Brazil? Don’t get me started…
June 6, 2006 at 14:27 #2752I usually use the Racing Post but I thought I’d give the Sportsman another chance. I don’t really read the sports section so thats not an issue for me. In the racing section the insight section to the 2:30 race at Lingfield says:
Nordic Light is worth looking at in the market on hia degbut. Peggy’s Flower and Baby Strange have run decent races against decent rivals and …….
Firstly Baby Strange isn’t a maiden. Secondly Baby Strange isn’t in the race and was never enterd in it. I’m happy to overlook typos but I’m sorry I can’t buy a paper that doesn’t even know what horses are in the race.
June 6, 2006 at 14:38 #73075It should read Lingfield TDK. That’s a mistake of my own;)
