I like unbeaten horses. I like supplemented horses. Three to choose from here, and I’ll go with the man who could least afford the £17,500 fee – Paul Smith who owns just one other horse besides Kingston Hill.
KH showed a fine attitude for one so inexperienced last time, having to go through a couple of different gaps in his run from last to first, finishing like a proper stayer and an improving type from a yard in form.
Pinzolo’s a better looker than KH though he took quite a bit longer than that horse to put his rivals away in both races, albeit he was in a pocket for a while last time. The ground will help him through the flat spot he’s likely to hit, but I expect KH to have too much pace for him.
Another fascinating Saturday race in prospect. I could get used to the Flat lark
October 25, 2013 at 22:59 #456161With Sudden Wonder and Munjaz (beaten a nose by Moontime) franking the form at Newmarket on Wednesday. I’m going with
Pinzolo
as best bet of the day.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...October 25, 2013 at 23:48 #456169Thirdtimelucky, there already is a thread for the Racing post Trophy, but you already know this, you’ve posted on it….discuss
October 26, 2013 at 03:39 #456181Hi Big G..Yes you are correct..about Racing Post..and the reason why I created another thread is quite simply to help all the other members on here to make some easy money by backing Johan Strauss..OK hes into 9s now from 25s…hehe…so perhaps some have taken my advice…Incidentally someone mentioned JS form at Naas…lol…Yes he lost…that’s not the point…he looked incredible when asked to race…likewise in his first test at Newmarket(oh and I wonder why AOB sent him to UK for his racecourse debut)where he showed incredible speed and stamina absolutely flying near finish to just being pipped…this horse wasn’t supplemented like Century..the derby is his target..He could possibly destroy the opposition today…
October 26, 2013 at 04:32 #456184Interesting how two people can watch the same race and come to two different conclusions. For me Strauss failed to reel in the winner despite Naas having an uphill finish.Joseph was sitting like he was riding Black Caviar yet when he pushed the button he got the normal response not the one he expected.Same happened at Newmarket . Mark Johnston is my man for today.
October 26, 2013 at 05:33 #456186Dear oh dear…7/1 now Johann Strauss…Guys and Girls..time for a change….The value has gone..Derby calling and lets not forget..this is Johans target…50/1..Get on Get on…HAPPYDAYS!
October 26, 2013 at 06:26 #456190It makes you wonder why the trainer who had stated this horse trains at half speed..has left him in this race atall..and unlike the other ballydoyle runners he hasnt been supplemented..and unlike Toormore he hasn’t been taken out…Perhaps (reading through the lines)..this was/is a very highly thought of colt whose aim is the Epsom derby!!!
October 26, 2013 at 09:52 #456232Johan Strauss won’t win. End of.
October 26, 2013 at 10:23 #456242A win is a plus but Rich..come on I did say a few days ago 25/1 eway…I think he will win doing handstands..but if not hel deff be placed..Come to the party..lol

Infact little late Rich…Get on Johann antepost Derby 2014 @ 50/1 Skybet like me….Oh dear I see that’s gone now…40s still available…Come to the party.
October 26, 2013 at 12:04 #456265Look, I wish you all the luck Thirdtimelucky, and I think you couldn’t have made it clearer that you fancy this horse strongly, but it does risk becoming a tad tiresome if you are repeating the same opinion time after time.
I accept that you would like other people to gain from your suggestion, fair play, but can I suggest you rein it in a bit. I would add that, from my experience anyway, there is no such thing as easy money in racing.
Best of luck mate, I do hope you get a good return from your bet.
October 26, 2013 at 12:07 #456267If I was on Pinzolo I would be a little bit concerned that having been very well supported when the prices were released that initial support appears to have dried up even though given the Monsun/Barathea cross you wouldn’t have thought conditions would be much of a problem. Somewhat has the form in the book so it is perhaps surprising to see that he has also failed to attract much support. Perhaps he is one of those deceptive horses with a pounding action who doesn’t actually want soft ground?

Stilvi, I mentioned before that I thought Somewhat’s action suggested he would handle softer ground. I’m glad that Mark Johnston has stated "We expect him to appreciate some give in the ground. Everyone who has ridden him said he’d prefer give in the ground, even after he ran at Newmarket last time"
I think the reason he hasn’t been backed down from 8/1 (17/2 in a couple of places) is that he isn’t one of the sexy "could be anything" horses, three or four fit that mould here.
As I said in my summary earlier, he isn’t maybe open to as much improvement as others, but what he has done has been very solid and his Newbury win was impressive. His last three races could very easily been three wins, in which case he wouldn’t be 8/1.
It’s a case of you know what you get with Somewhat, not what you might get if rumours are to be believed.
I’m not wanting to suggest Somewhat is some kind of plodder, I actually think he is better than his results suggest, and he has improved. He was beaten 8 lengths by Berkshire at Ascot in the Chesham in June on his second run, whereas in his last race in the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes he was beaten a neck, and having watched the race, he was unlucky as he was "mugged" by Berkshire coming from behind and racing up the rail away from Somewhat’s race. When he was clocked, he ran on really well and I feel was a bit unlucky. That form is pretty solid, given that Berkshire looks a very good horse….5th fav for the 2000 Guineas and as low as 14/1 for the Derby.
I’m taking the "bird in the hand" approach and backing on what the known form is. There may be something special in the race, time will tell, but I’m hopeful that Somewhat is better than he is being given credit for. I took the 8/1 on Tuesday, and I’ve topped up with the 17/2 at Betvictor.
October 26, 2013 at 13:21 #456283Somewhat for me too, somewhat of a proven quantity in the field, his Berkshire form is very good.

Somewhat the first beaten and a woeful display by the Godolphin horse. Good scrap for last place though.
October 26, 2013 at 15:06 #456299Impressive. I wonder if he just takes time to hit top gear or if that is greenness – I suspect it’s the latter and the more he learns the quicker to pick up he’ll be. I took some 25s for The Derby, but might need a lot of rain in late May!
October 26, 2013 at 15:08 #456300Not sure what we learned there, except that my choice Somewhat didn’t handle or get home on the ground. There’s nothing that ran that would have me penciling in a winner in the 2000 or Derby. Bit of a damp squib really.

Steeplechasing, I was typing up my last reply whilst you were posting yours. Well done with your assessment of the race and most of all being on the winner.
Hope he does well for you in the Derby, I don’t mean to knock him, just that I don’t know how good a race it was, nothing else got into the race and a 200/1 shot just got pipped for 3rd. I’m keeping my powder dry at this point.
