I think I once raised this subject before.

We all have views on things, but surely we should express them solely under our own names, rather than under a handle which makes it look like the author speaks for ALL the members of this website?

I’m going to illustrate my point by cutting and pasting a tweet, the sentiments of which I fully agree with and endorse, actually (so there’s no personal axe to grind here) but shouldn’t any personal opinion be appearing on Twitter under the author’s name rather than looking like it speaks for the entire TRF membership?

“Good to see and hear the bravery of these BBC pundits who’ve heroically set aside their personal disgust at Qatar hosting the World Cup to subject themselves to the horrors of 5 star hotels in order to ‘report’ for the benefit of all in our nation. True heroes all.”

I’m sure many here would join me in agreeing with the above IMO witty sarcastic sentiment here – but some TRFers might not.

I thought it was a fab comment and was delighted to see it. I refuse to watch any of the games from the World Cup as the poisonous Qatar regime has bought and sold FIFA which has acted disgracefully in threatening yellow cards for those wearing armbands. Blatter lives. Good to see the German team having the bottle to face down the oppression. I saw photos of the England team giving the Nazi salute at the 1938 Olympics, part of the plan to appease Hitler. That worked well.

I understand your point about pseudonyms and share it to a certain extent. But in today’s world we see the potential danger to those who have the courage to speak out, don’t we? They are subjected to a tirade of abuse and harrassment and have even been murdered by fanatics. There are very good and legitimate reasons why people use pseudonyms. Some of these are related to employment and so on.

IMHO it’s more than likely that Twitter readers will have been attracted to the TRF by the tweet.

The general line of the TRF’s posts has been on the record for a long time. Anyone joining it can easily look it up. It isn’t feasible to run a referendum before a tweet goes up. I don’t think you can put sport into a container which is hermetically sealed off from the real world and its major political issues.

No doubt there may be some TRFers who do not agree with the sentiment, but they are free to post their own opinions.

    Very fair comment!

I’m sure it caught the eye – as stated, I personally fully endorse it and considered it an excellent tweet in its own right.

Unless anyone posts here to oppose it, I guess I’ve fallen into the trap of taking offence on behalf of others who aren’t actually offended!

Maybe I need to “fetch me coat” on this one?

Hold on to yer big green coat.

I think unless it’s directly promoting the site, where the general moniker suffices, it should bear the author’s name.

Ian I love you mate, I think you need to take up a hobby, whenever I have too much spare time I find myself falling into the same trap of getting wound up by things that really shouldn’t be bothering me lol.

Though having just read Gambles comment I can’t say posting the authors name is a bad idea, that would seem a fair compromise.

“I think you need to take up a hobby”

You’re not wrong, Ben, but, sadly for all here, TRF IS my hobby!

Thousands of hours of free entertainment for me every year (and hundreds of thousands of Chezza words of misery for the entire TRF membership!)

I too think it was one of gamble’s more lucid suggestions

That sounds like damning with backhanded faint praise – and it is – but hopefully it will amuse the great man.

I hear what you’re saying Chezza. Ultimately it comes down to whether TRF is a democratic entity and therefore obliged to represent its members. I rather fear that this isn’t the case as I can’t envisage any way that this would work and, given the makeup of TRF, how it could ever work, without all of us getting at least questioned about our involvement, if not actually arrested!

I don’t know how long it’s been there but the account does state ‘Views expressed are those of TRF’s admin’.

Twitter is a complete mystery to me.

Purcell, I suggest you let it remain a mystery. A terrible waste of time.

Particularly sensible observations by Tonge and Richard IMO among others.

I now feel it’s (just about) turned out to be a worthwhile discussion thread.
