Salselon
Because the form of that win is possibly the best on offer, because she represents powerful connections, because plenty of things went wrong in the Musidora, she was hampered after leaviong the stalls, possibly raced on a slower strip of ground to the winner and there is every chance of reversing the form over a longer trip, one she’s bred to relish that Short Skirt isn’t guaranteed to stay. The Musidora form itself is slightly muddling with the proximity of the lowly rated third so I would be wary of taking it too literally.
June 2, 2006 at 08:55 #72709I’ve backed Riyalma, pretty much based on watching the video’s so i’m almost going completely on intuition… (probably a bad idea but I wanted to have a small interest) That was after looking at the form which didn’t really help as none of it looks particularly strong.. I saw short skirt win her maiden last year and was mega impressed but then backed her next time when she got hammered and never fancied her as a stayer.. Alexandrova has a lot to find to win this, she looks to have a turn of foot but she will have to come on a lot for the run. The big imponderable is if speciosa stays, if she does I think she’ll win, but on breeding you wouldn’t fancy her.. Riyalma’s form isn’t particularly strong either but I thought visually she looked to travel well and she travelled prominently so can hopefully worry speciosa out of it towards the end…

Especially as in a race with no excused the horse who beat her is a larger price??
Last time out she looked all over the winner 2f out and bottomed out as if she’d come on in leaps and bounds for the run. I’d back her to beat Short Skirt

Given that its an OBrien horse..maybe but in most circumstances no. She was afterall lucky to finish that close to the front one who spent ages looking for room.
I might back Prowess ew at a long price for this race

June 2, 2006 at 11:22 #72712Fair comments SHL, I don’t think she should be 5/2 but i like to think she’ll reverse the form :)
June 2, 2006 at 12:50 #72713My point is Alexandrova is only the price she is because of the colours on her back. I genuinely think she is the weakest favourite of any classic I’ve seen in a long, long time.
All I hear when Alexandrova has been mentioned are excuses. ;)
June 2, 2006 at 15:15 #72714No excuses needed today Salselon.
June 2, 2006 at 15:16 #72715Flippin heck Alexandrova destroyed them. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Horatio Nelson go off favourite for the Derby now.
Poor Oaks I think but a good performance from Alexandrova clearly appreciated the mile and a half and the fast pace.
June 2, 2006 at 15:18 #72716Good performance – probably didn’t beat that much but couldn’t have done it more impressively.
June 2, 2006 at 15:22 #72717Didnt have a bet but that was nicely done… :)

But probably not a good oaks
June 2, 2006 at 15:23 #72718True. Still don’t think she was a decent price. You can’t base your pre-race thoughts on the race outcome ;)
June 2, 2006 at 16:27 #72719If you trawl through the thread I think you’ll see that I didn’t.
June 2, 2006 at 16:31 #72720DJ, I wasn’t referring to you, more to myself ;)
As in I still think she was a very weak favourite, regardless of what happened. Making sense, probably not :)

I think you will find that it was a fast-slow-fast pace.
They dawdled in the middle half mile of the race.
June 2, 2006 at 20:49 #72722Indeed she would have been even more impressive given a genuine pace throughout. Intead she made her move as the leaders were quickening up front.
Yeah Fallon said as much, yet the time was pretty quick only just over a second slower than standard. Maybe the ground is drying out pretty quickly. The time of the first race was slower in comparison and Chancellor is a supposed softer ground horse, Shirocco also supposedly best on ground slightly slower than good.
Should get faster times still tomorrow, should be quickish good ground, maybe even a mention of good to firm?.
