Yesterday’s edition seemed dull.
I thought Bruce Millington was fine (agree about the jumper) and also noted a bit of edge between McCririck and he – although it seemed to come from the McRirick direction rather than the other way. Possibly some old wounds surfacing.
There are lots of very able, more dynamic presenters in racing broadcasting at the minute. I’d like to see a couple of them promoted to the Ch4 gig – if indeed it is a promotion these days.
March 18, 2012 at 12:14 #397572Betting, betting, betting. Adverts for the bookmakers, and then straight to the Female for more betting.
Tanya’s got her very own betting pod, would you believe?
Tommo’s in danger of peaking too early (again) and Sam Thomas, the new roving reporter with the jockeys, seems to be trying to make a new fashion accessory of his curly earpiece wiring (no attempt to hide it at all).It would be better if Tanya did her bulletin entirely by means of Tic-tac, thereby saving us her attempts at proving she has mastered English as a foreign language.

I just cannot, for the life of me, fathom why so many people defend Tanya Stevenson.
The usual defence is that "she knows her stuff". Lots of people know their stuff about all sorts of things but that doesn’t make them qualified to go on national television and become a presenter.
Broadcasting skills and ability should be the main factor, along with the ability to speak fluently, grammatically and without constantly tripping up.
It’s the same in other sports when some so-called celebrity becomes a pundit for no better reason than he or she used to play the sport and is therefore deemed an expert. The days of the trained specialist journalist and broadcaster, where being a wordsmith or a competent speaker, seem to be dying.
Only today, on a new thread, Tanya is being put up as one of a possible dream team of racing TV presenters. You couldn’t make it up……April 7, 2012 at 08:34 #399568Tanya struggled again this morning with the golf and racing.
I’m watching it on +1 and 40 minutes in and they have discussed one race and are only just about to discuss Haydock where there is valuable racing and the trainers championship interest.
5 minutes spent on Haydock but not discussed in the studio – pathetic.
Come on, guys. You should be much, much better than this.
April 7, 2012 at 09:58 #399581Dull again today and no more than cursory discussion of the day’s racing.
It needs a bit of life.
Chappers anyone?
April 7, 2012 at 10:08 #399583Matt Chapman at 8am on a Saturday morning… discuss
April 7, 2012 at 11:28 #399593If you want to lose all the remaining viewers then employ Matt Chapman, otherwise no – just no
April 7, 2012 at 13:02 #399603Matt Chapman at 8am on a Saturday morning
I can just picture it: "And now, we welcome our very special guest, he’s a former top policeman who’s now one of our very best racing commentators, he can enliven even the dullest three-horse race, it’s Mr… John….HUNT…"
Er, yeee haaaa (I think).
I suppose Channel 4 would see it as a chance to get rid of its Dubai sponsors (after criticism of Dubai on this forum) and replace them with Brylcreem if those two ever teamed up on the Morning Line.
Could just imagine the first question for Hunt on the Guest Test: "What is Britain’s top-selling hair gel?"
Question two: "How much does it cost a bottle?"
Matt Chapman, John Hunt, Tanya Stevenson, Tom Lee, Lesley Graham and Tommo. Imagine the tonic for the Morning Line’s flagging viewing figures.
The amount of criticism Chapman is getting elsewhere for his comedy commentating efforts at Folkestone is amazing. Nobody seems to like his over-the-top antics. One of the posts says that, as Chapman is rapidly spreading his wings as a racecourse commentator, it now means that at least Tommo is not now the worst commentator on the circuit.
This is ironic as Tommo, Jim McGrath and the others facing the axe will soon be getting the boot to make way permanently for Chapman and the other commentating newcomers (not to mention helping to secure John Hunt’s well-deserved place).
The fact that virtually everybody seems to hate Chapman’s commentaries makes it odds-on that other doomed but competent commentators such as Iain Mackenzie will soon be given the heave-ho to make way for him. The clueless powers-that-be will doubtless believe that, because Chapman has become "high-profile", this is a good thing in terms of publicity. All publicity is good publicity, right?
Jim’s poor tipping and his liking for picking favourites as his uninspiring selections on At The Races is also proving a source of complaint on other forums.
Interesting to see again on one of them the fascinating article in the Observer from years ago about the appalling record of Tommo’s tips on his telephone line after reporters monitored his dreadful selections for several weeks. Nothing seems to change in the last few weeks, by the sounds of the host of recent complaints about his tipping line.
Why DO people waste their money on telephone tipping lines instead of sitting down and working the form out for themselves?April 7, 2012 at 22:28 #399649The Morning Line is much too predictable now they just concentrate on a review of the weeks racing…yawn (we can all access Racing Post) The movers and shakers of the day and what Pricewise has tipped up..yawn again and the most boring waste of 30 seconds The Guest Test…who cares.
We hardly ever get a good review of the whole days racing ahead, very few interviews with trainers, they take one or two top races then tip at least 5 or 6 hopefuls, there is no inside information as to the fitness of the horses etc. Why not have a review of the 2yo races of the day and who has been performing well on the gallops, that’s where the winners of the day will be found. Forget Pricewise, Tanyas titbits and get out and report whats been flying up the gallops in the past week, then maybe we might find ourselve bagging a few pounds from our local bookies instead of filling his satchel each week courtesy of Nick Luck & Team.
Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out...April 7, 2012 at 22:54 #399651Forget Tanya’s titbits
I notice Tanya Stevenson has been likened elsewhere to Wurzel Gummidge because of her scarecrow-like outfit. I believe this is grossly unfair, very offensive and totally uncalled for.
People should remember that Wurzel does his best, knows his stuff and has feelings. I remember seeing him looking very smart one day — wearing a tie.
At the other end of the spectrum, I still can’t quite believe the unfeasibly tight trousers Emma Spencer was wearing at Lingfield the other week.
Have only just watched the video today and had to freeze-frame to double-check. As has been said before, the last time I saw legs that thin, they were on a flamingo. - AuthorPosts
