He doesn’t make me want to laugh or cry, just heave half a brick through the television and scream. :)
August 30, 2006 at 06:31 #74892Quote: from Maurice on 11:44 am on Aug. 6, 2006[br]Think what you like of Thomson, he has countless years experience in presenting and works on the premise that the programme has to try to appeal as much to the first time viewer with no understanding of racing as seasoned pros.
McCrirck is a bookies mouthpiece who doesn’t nkow where to draw the line between impartial presentation of the facts and subjective chestbeating. I’ve seen him in action off-camera at the track and concluded he’s a moron.
Tanya is, I’d presume, sleeping with someone in a position of influence. She may have sound knowledge of dogs (being one herself, in my opinion) and the market but she makes Angus Loughran come across as articulate. I feel sorry for her.
I think you will find Tanya plays for the other side.

August 30, 2006 at 11:09 #74894and ill-informed.
No need to drag back the discussed and dismissed ‘betfair’ style comments on an otherwise entertaining thread.
August 30, 2006 at 13:53 #74895I think most underestimate how hard it must be to host live TV and while he makes mistakes so does everyone it just happens that horse racing is a sport that the purists know inside out and is based on much more than just opinion (For instance I think hlf the football pundits talk out of their @rse but because they’ve played before their opinion is deemed to be valid)..
I think Alistair Down is an intelligent writer but he’s drab, cattermole is almost too polished and doesn’t bring much peronality to the table and the women on channel 4 are rubbish (the girls on ATR are much better). Personally I prefer it when Thommo presents because he brings some enthusiasm and personality to the table and yes we want intelligent considered opinions but if the sport is ever going to expand that has to be garnished with a bit of charisma and appeal

how old are you lot?
I’m 50..but I’ve still got a sense of humour..you need one with my betting accounts;)
If you watch someone like Tommo and expect him to be intelligent..then anger and frustration must ensue..if you had a striker at football..would you play him in the nets?..no..you pay him to score goals..they pay Tommo to present…if anyone expects more..then no wonder you are so disappointed with him.
I’m 32 and I have no sense of humour, infact I have no sense at all. :giggle:
Thommo would be fine if he just presented like a normal, sane human being, why the constant Coco the clown act? Just makes me want to chuck the remote at the Telly. I tune in to watch a racing programme not a panto.
August 30, 2006 at 18:01 #74898If the only qualities that C4 require of their racing presenters in order to please the advertisers and the racing industry who are paying for coverage is "enthusiasm" and "personality" how about firing Thommo and hiring either Ant and Dec or Davina McCall?
Thompson is especially annoying when he points at the camera.
The second most irritating man eking a living out of racing on terrestrial TV is the lightweight ,vacuous and over promoted Rishi Persad ,last seen at the Beeb’s Goodwood farewell asking inane questions of Fanshawe and others.
I would expect the BBC to further reduce racing coverage over the next few years to preview the London Olympics. Will Clare Balding spit the dummy in protest, relocating to Castleford and becoming the full time rugby league anchor thus leaving Persad in charge of what racing remains?

Exactly! He tries way too hard to be funny, and fails anyway. He doesn’t have a single ounce of wit in him. I don’t mind presenters trying to be amusing and being light hearted, but he’s so over the top and not actually a tiny bit funny! Now give me James Willoughby any day, who’s so laid back it’s a wonder he doesn’t fall over, yet manages to make me laugh more times that I can remember.
June 19, 2010 at 08:16 #15397Now a bland, clicky, poorly produced racing program, where the presenters spend more time giving banter to each other and telling each other personal jokes.
I struggled to get through it this morning. Gone are the days when they actually discussed the racing in detail. I do not understand why they are showing a poor card at Newmarket today when most of the target audience will be tuned into Royal Ascot, then cannot show key Derby trials earlier in the season.
Racing For Change no doubt have something to do with it. Bring back McCririck, Graham, Francombe and Down.
Even the phone link with Barry Dennis was poor. I wonder why nobody new will get into racing, and then you watch drivel like that and think it was a personal members club.
I know I will probably get slated for this post but it has really got on my nerves. Before anybody says I am a Brian and not a Ben, I am a 20 year old male and therefore I am surely what RFC are looking to appeal to.
Yet they want to recruit people my age that attend university, never the working class man such as myself. My friends and girlfriend cannot understand what I see in horse racing and see it as a boring sport which I am only focussing on because I am an addictive gambler. Racing needs to shrug off this stereotype and make television that appeals to the masses, not just those 4 or 5 sitting in the studio.
June 19, 2010 at 08:21 #301873Yep i have to concur with that. It has turned into a load of old rubbish. TBH i dont know why they bother with BD’s bit anyway (never have done).
Emma Spencer annoys me too. What does she bring to the party??………..absolutely nothing!!
June 19, 2010 at 08:31 #301876I have to say I agree with the gist of your comments Mick.
Very cliquey today, fuelled by Nick Luck’s in-joke banter, a little section around Spencer and Cattermole’s Jeremy Noseda socialising (or otherwise) being particularly alienating for the majority of viewers I’d have thought.
The pity of it is they all know their stuff but are made to look lightweight by the show’s new direction.
It’s becoming racing’s version of Loose Women (only with men)!
June 19, 2010 at 08:36 #301877It has certainly lost its appeal of yesteryear. It’s a tired format with bland presenters and either needs scrapping or a much needed re-vamping.
One thing I did pick up on this morning was Nick Luck’s condescending manner towards Tom Lee. Lord Snooty spoke to Lee as if he was his public school "Fag"
… and does anyone else feel the vibe between Mike Cattermole and Emma Spencer ?
Gambling Only Pays When You're Winning
June 19, 2010 at 08:38 #301879I actually enjoy it and see… nothing wrong with it.
June 19, 2010 at 08:44 #301881Emma Spencer annoys me too. What does she bring to the party??………..absolutely nothing!!
A pretty face and ……
No idea of form.
YM,
Surely the reason why you are seeing Emma, Tom, Nick etc. because they are looking for new, younger people.
Yet you want to bring back McCrirrick and Francome?
They want educated people. What’s wrong with university?
If Lord Snooty knows his stuff, then he should be there.Value Is EverythingJune 19, 2010 at 08:50 #301882To be fair it’s been heading this way for some time … seems they would rather have the ‘in-joke’ style of presenting than the serious journo analysis of someone like Alistair Down … not sure who they think is actually watching … someone ought to remind them it’s still the regular punters and not the so-called ‘new’ audience they seem intent on trying to attract.
Glad I’m not the only one irritated by the contributions of Emma Spencer … they might just as well ask her, "so, Emma, I guess you can’t see past the favourite / Jamie’s ride again ?" (delete whichever applicable)
June 19, 2010 at 08:55 #301883… btw, my comment doesn’t mean I’m not aware of the need to constantly try to attract new blood into the sport … just not convinced that what I’ve seen so far from RFC suggests they have any idea how to do it either
