Less exposed horse for me in Carlingford Lough.
it’s wide open and on there best form any one here has a decent chance. Good LuckDecember 28, 2014 at 14:53 #499767The forgotten horse in the race is
First Lieutenant
at 16/1,1/4 odds first 3 with Stan James by the way.Wherever ‘Bobs worth’ finishes this fellows never far behind and I would love to see this seasons Grand National winner take this en-route to Aintree.Of course had the Lieutenant ran in last years Gold cup I probably wouldn’t have backed
Lord Windermere
so I have to back both today as loyalty does occasionally pay off.
Hard to see First Lieutenant winning but a place is possible.
It’s been a while since he won now and I thought he put up a poor effort last time out. He’s got tongue equipment fitted for the first time today so perhaps they are getting a bit frustrated and trying anything that might wring some improvement from him.
Boston Bob’s connections said they wanted to avoid soft ground for their horse and Road To Riches’ team have said the same about their fellow. I feel the soft/heavy ground could scupper them.
Sam Winner was game last time and looks like a grinder, it’s hard to get excited about winning a 4 runner affair from the disappointing Medermit though, with Holywell unseating and the under-performing Ma Filleule finishing third. He’s got a lot more on in today’s company but at least it seems that the ground may have gone against some of the field.
Lord Windermere surprised me when winning a Gold Cup that saw strange performances on the day from both Silviniaco Conti and Bobsworth. His seasonal re-appearance was promising and certainly more encouraging than his first three runs last season, which left him as an outsider going to the festival. A win today would see him go 2nd favourite behind the King George winner for The Gold Cup. I am still to be convinced by him though but maybe I’ll be proved all wrong and become a convert today.
I’ll give Bobs Worth another go based on an impressive win in this last year. He ran two rare poor races last season and that needs to be forgiven to have faith today. He’s been reported as in good form and today’s the day we probably find out if he
is
gone at the game as suggested earlier.
Good luck everyone.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2014 at 15:06 #499768That was shocking from Bobs worth.
Fair play to connections to road to riches – turning out to be a good one he is.
December 28, 2014 at 15:09 #499769Paddy Power have opened a book on The Lexus Chase and the odds are as follows:-
Bobs Worth (5/2), Boston Bob (4), Lord Windemere (9/2), Road To Riches (11/2), Shutthefrontdoor (7), First Lieutenant (10), Rocky Creek (10), On His Own (12), Lyreen Legend (16)
As we can see, several of the J N Wines runners are in the mix again and
I am drawn straight to the winner, Road To Riches, considering that those who were behind him that day have a lot of ground to make up, even allowing for the fact that they probably needed their first runs of the season.
The two Bobs will be popular but my two bob would be on Noel Meade’s horse to confirm the form at 11/2.
Sometimes your first pick is your best pick.
Poor effort from Bobs Worth. I’d say he’s a spent force but he was disappointing first time out last season. Just shows that listening to jockeys can be very misleading with Barry Geraghty saying Bobs was "in the form of his life" and that Sign Of A Victory was a "serious contender to Faugheen"
There should be a "Three tripes and you’re out" rule for Jockeys.
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2014 at 15:18 #499770What a strange race. Several were ridden like non-triers, then looked like swamping the early leaders, then faded away again.
Bobs Worth is probably finished now, but I’d love him to prove me wrong. Something is seriously wrong at Seven Barrows with practically every one of their Grade 1 horses injured, absent or ruined in the past two years.
I might be biased towards him, but Boston Bob is the one I’d take out for Gold Cup purposes. Willie Mullins seemed convinced that he’d be much better on good ground in spite of some solid wins and today’s decent effort in softer conditions. If he can attack the spring in the way he did last year, he could be a contender.
December 28, 2014 at 15:51 #499777Sam Winner
ran an interesting performance at this level.
He is done for Cheltenham and I won’t be surprised if he is third (or even second, perhaps) in the next Gold Cup. Is the National still his priority for next spring?I also begin to get worried about Nicky Henderson’s yard.
Bobs Worth
isn’t known to be a horse which need preparation races to perform well in competition (he won the Berkshire and the Hennessy without running before..).
Silviniaco Conti
is a real solid Gold Cup favourite at the moment.
December 28, 2014 at 16:41 #499789Everything I’ve read from Henderson and Geraghty prior to this race was riddled with negatives regarding the rain softened ground. Put me off him majorly, no surprise to see a flop.
Winner
December 28, 2014 at 17:20 #499793Road to Riches has surprised me; seems to be improving, obviously stays well, and as a Galway Plate winner will appreciate the better ground at Cheltenham. On his Own could also be a contender; gave a way significant ground jumping to the right, tho I recall he wasn’t that fluent in the Gold Cup either. The proximity of Sam Winner casts a doubt over the form, but perhaps I’m being unkind.

Winner
The ground wasn’t as soft at the time I backed Bobs Worth. His original odds of 5/2 didn’t appeal to me and that was why Road To Riches was my pick at the opening odds.
Seeing Bobs Worth at 4/1 and a glowing report from Barry G suckered me into switching allegiance but even allowing for the softer ground he never looked to have a prayer at any stage.
Road To Riches won it, but not in the manner I had envisaged. The trainer believes he’s better on a sound surface. Given those conditions, which we know aren’t Silviniaco Conti’s favourite, I could see Road To Riches being a live contender for The Gold Cup.
Given his upward profile and with youth on his side I believe he will go off a single figure price with so many doubts regarding others in the field.
I’ve had a few quid on at 12/1, which is generally 4 times bigger than the favourite, who still has to prove it up that hill in March.
Road To Riches 12/1 Cheltenham Gold Cup
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 28, 2014 at 23:38 #49984112/1 (gone now I think) looks a bit big for a horse that fair and square beat half a dozen of those it’ll meet in March.
But, the Gold Cup is hard to fathom and I’m not sure Road To Riches is the answer. Bobs Worth was never going to be suited by today and, at 18s on BF, is not one to be writing off.
The one that appeals to me at the odds is Sam Winner at 35/1 on BF. A strongly run Gold Cup might suit him and he is finally beginning to live up to his strong early promise. Although I agree he is an ‘unlikely’ winner, I think he’s a little bit more likely than 35/1 suggests.
December 28, 2014 at 23:50 #499842Not a bad shout Cormack, perhaps a bit of a Synchronised type to outstay everything up the hill.
Not for me though.
December 29, 2014 at 00:42 #499847Road To Riches is still 12/1 in a few places. Bobs Worth is 20/1 with a few firms and makes no appeal to me. He couldn’t win it last year when a lot seemed positive and his imperious record of consistency is a distant memory now.
Sam Winner has time on his side and I think he’s a horse that might win a Grand National some day.
At similar odds to Sam Winner Don Cossack makes some appeal to me at 33/1. On the up, he has ground to make up with Holywell on last seasons form but it’s possible he’s improving and while Holywell is being titted about with by an out of form Jonjo, this horse is winning races which could help build confidence. He held off Boston Bob and Lord Windermere last time despite a couple of sticky jumps and, if he can sharpen his fencing, 33/1 could be big looking odds come Gold Cup day. He’s as short as 14/1 in places.
Don Cossack 33/1 Gold Cup
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
December 29, 2014 at 11:09 #499861Lord Windermere imo ran a better race yesterday than last year and 16/1 about a reigning champion is bonkers, he’ll be half those odds in march.
December 29, 2014 at 12:17 #499866Don Cossack a fair play too.
December 29, 2014 at 17:55 #499881Given that Silv Conti is 0 from 3 at Cheltenham, and that Road to Riches has everything going for him, he seems very good value, even now the 12s has gone. Plenty 10s around for a young improving horse who’s highly consistent, quick enough to win the Galway Plate (22f) on good ground, yet stays the Lexus trip (now believed by The Blues Brother to be over farther than advertised) and jumps well.
Meade’s dire Festival record will be held against him, but this horse looks great value, along with Bobs Worth at 20s.
