I have opted for John Gosden’s Castle Harbour here.
Ribchester is early favourite but I get the feeling Richard Fahey wants to try him at a mile for now and after a 2000 Guineas third it is early to concede defeat and go down to 7F and group 3 company.
Gifted Master is generally next best, having somewhat surprisingly gone down to 6F after winning at a mile on his final start last year. I feel he may have caught Washington DC on an off day last time, when the O’Brien horse was only 7th as evens favourite. Washington DC has since bounced back, making the run in the Pavilion Stakes look like a complete blip.
I will pass on those two and go for Castle Harbour, who is 10/1 for the Jersey. He needs to improve again but the Racing Post have him at 102 for now and that is 16lbs improvement on his first official handicap mark.
The son of Kyllachy made his debut in a Newmarket maiden, where he seemed quite keen and made all for a win from the favourite who later won a maiden. Castle Harbour earned a handicap mark of 86 for his win and then ran at York, again over 7F, in a big field handicap. Well supported, he went off favourite at 9/2 and this time his jockey readily settled him and held him up at the rear of the field.
Once they hit the 2F mark Castle Harbour quickened nicely and came through smoothly to take it up. He was a bit green and wandered slightly when hitting the front but he was good value for his win from the promising Richard Hannon horse Chief Whip, who probably bumped into a class act on the day.
Castle Harbour is a horse of substance, he looked a size bigger than Chief Whip as they crossed the line and he looks like a horse destined for Group success this year. He travels well and can clearly pick up from off the pace. He looked a work in progress to me and I will be surprised if he isn’t a useful tool for Gosden this season.
The stable have been talking as if the Jersey is his next target and it can’t hurt that he’s won twice at the 7F trip of the Royal Ascot race.
I could easily envisage him being 5/1 on the day of the race and 10/1 has to be taken for that reason.
John Gosden has had a setback with So Mi Dar but consolation awaits.
The Jersey Stakes Castle Harbour 10/1Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 14, 2016 at 12:00 #1251262This race looks very tricky and its difficult to tell who is going to thrive on this soft ground. Castle Harbour looks a good bet but I have noticed that the last 4 winners of this came into it off the back of a group 1 race. The last one not to was Strong Suit for Hannon snr in 2011.
That trend only leaves two, Herald The Dawn and Ribchester. Both like slower ground and with Ribchester finishing well ahead of him in the 2000 Guineas, it looks like he is the best option of the two.
I know he is carrying top weight but for him to be almost double the price of Castle Harbour is a bit strange. He finished ahead of Attendu in his first start this year over in France (admittedly after bumping the s*** out of him, got disqualified and placed 5th). Attendu recently beat the group 1 mare Esoterique comfortably so the outright bare form is encouraging.
Its the price that is attractive, if he were any lower than 6’s then I shan’t bother. He is 9/1 now but I will wait and see what other firms price him up as.
June 14, 2016 at 12:39 #1251272Think the juice has gone out of Castle Harbour’s price. Clearly the gosden factor is coming into play.
On the other hand this is often a race that is won by a lightly raced three year old. Royal Ascot for me favours those horses that will travel well as the races are always run at a fast gallop so that should suit this horse.
I think Castle Harbour is priced up about right now. Anything against him? Ibn Malik is a horse I’ve always liked but you wonder if he’ll be quite good enough. Ribchester is solid but the four pound penalty puts me off him.
Another one at decent odds is light music, she handled soft ground very well when winning at Newbury.
All in all it’s a very open race.
June 15, 2016 at 09:51 #1251518Backed Ibn Malik. Much bigger price than the Gosden horse and others despite having a higher rating, will love the ground and stable won this last year. No penalty to worry about either.
June 15, 2016 at 10:34 #1251529With SkyBet money back special if finishing in the places, I’ve backed all of Gifted Master, Remarkable and Castle Harbour. Think they are the three best in the field by quite a fair bit.
June 15, 2016 at 12:04 #1251555Terrible race, Castle Harbour easy wins it
June 15, 2016 at 12:27 #1251557Shouldn’t The Jersey Stakes be for jumpers?
June 15, 2016 at 12:50 #1251561Milk it Joe for all its worth
June 15, 2016 at 12:54 #1251562This is a proper tricky race and I have backed three Remarkable Thikryaat and Ribchester but am not confident.
I could do with Thikryaat winning though cos I have it doubled with Jennies Jewel at 10/1 !!
On rating Gifted Master beats Steady Pace and Ibn Malik but there has to be improvers in this!!
You can keep going round and round in circles with this race!!
June 15, 2016 at 13:11 #1251567Terrible race, Castle Harbour easy wins it
What will you do if it drifts out and gets usurped by something in the betting, as you only ever tip favs
June 15, 2016 at 13:18 #1251572Don’t wind him up Judge

If it loses it loses but definitely the one to be on especially at 13/2. Caravaggio yesterday 5/2 that was an outstanding price! Castle harbour isnt a fav is it, its 13/2 so not a fav…
June 15, 2016 at 13:32 #1251582I tipped Castle Harbour first, at 10/1, so I have exclusive bragging rights if he wins. I hope people will respect that
Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
June 15, 2016 at 13:43 #1251585Most open Jersey stakes I can remember. Wouldn’t write the queens horse out of it either and Forge is also interesting.
June 15, 2016 at 14:20 #1251591Shouldn’t The Jersey Stakes be for jumpers?
Lol, like it Joe
June 15, 2016 at 14:28 #1251597As already alluded to by many on here, it’s wide open. I do think that
GIFTED MASTER looks a very decent horse and I think he will handle
the going which is a big bonus.THIKRIYAAT won’t be far behind.
June 15, 2016 at 14:40 #1251598Form horse was only danger to Castle Harbour so good result really. Position is always key, cant miss the break and then have your horse isolated simple as that.
