I thought it was a poor enough renewal of the Derrinstown today. I think the winner is more of an Archipenko than a Dylan Thomas, Yeats, High Chaparral or Galileo. St Nicholas Abbey looks certain to be Ireland’s best hope of landing the Epsom Derby for the third year in succession. If Cape Blanco was very highly thought of I think they’d have gone the Ballysax/Derrinstown route instead of going to York. Jan Vermeer has clearly not had the most straightforward of winters either if Aidan is hinting at going to France with him.
Famous Name made very hard work of the Amethyst but I’m not sure he was suited to the ride Smullen gave him. I presume he’ll go to the Curragh now where he’s the only one I can see giving Fame And Glory a race (provided Michael Bell’s filly doesn’t travel over).
Gile Na Gréine is also heading to the Curragh for the Guines instead of going to York. Sets up a very interesting clash with Lolly For Dolly.
May 10, 2010 at 08:30 #295066Famous Name might be better off in the Lockinge rather than a strongly run 10f Curragh race which seems to stretch his stamina although his owner may have others for that race.
May 10, 2010 at 12:44 #295100Didn’t realise the Lockinge was this Saturday … the Curragh it is then.
May 10, 2010 at 14:38 #295113He’s in the Queen Anne at Ascot as well but I doubt he’ll get his ground there. DK said yesterday that he won’t run him on fast ground again and he’s probably more likely to get some ease at HQ. There might be something in France for him later on in the summer?
May 10, 2010 at 19:34 #295155Any news on Termagant got 12/1 with Ladbrokes for Irish 1000 guineas.Heard nothing about this horse.
May 13, 2010 at 00:16 #295489Seámus Ó Bolguidír looks to have plenty of good fillies to go to war with this year. Akdarena won very well and Gold Bubbles was only just collared at York. Interesting times ahead down in Coolcullen.
Zoffany looks an early candidate for the Coventry/Railway Stakes. Probably didn’t beat anything of note tonight though.
May 13, 2010 at 11:36 #295525Alsalwa finally re-appeared last night after her promising second to Sagacious last year and picked-up nicely to win the last. Imagine the 1000 Guineas will be next for her.
Sagacious looked like she might be the best of the Bolger fillies at the end of last season but she’s currently out of training after a poor run at Gowran.
The O’Brien filly that was second last night might be getting it together after looking like a bit of a madam in her earlier runs.May 14, 2010 at 08:10 #295634Termagant goes to the Curragh and then Epsom according to stable tour in todays Rag.
A winners race next for Alsalwa.May 31, 2010 at 08:41 #297717Poor enough stuff at Navan on Saturday although Carrigalawn may develop into a stakes horse.
The O’Brien fillies Dance on Bye and Ice Empress are dodgepots.
Expensive failures at Leopardstown in the shape of Duff (who didn’t seem to want to know) and Age of Aquarius (why no pacemaker?). Another good performance by Profound Beauty who really likes Leopardstown but a pity the Oxx horse went wrong in the race (esp as I had forecast it with the winner!).
Good performance by Prendergast’s in the 2-y-o maiden, looked a picture in the parade ring and picked-up nicely …. O’Brien’s ran on well into second after looking a bit green.
Reasonable crowd and probably not a bad idea to switch it from its usual midweek slot.May 31, 2010 at 09:08 #297723Poor enough stuff at Navan on Saturday although Carrigalawn may develop into a stakes horse.

Yes, shame about Haralan, I hope the horse is going to be OK.
I thought Profound Beauty was most impressive especially considering it was her first run for some time, she’s was high on my "flat horses to watch" list before the race, now she’s right at the top. I’m not an ardent follower of the flat, she was my third bet of the season, so my bet on her was pretty misserable really by my NH standards(see lays and plays).
I wouldn’t write off Age Of Aquarius yet, good ride by Johnn Murtagh kicking for home to try to catch out PB but she ate up the gap in the manner of a very high class racehorse
AOA was never going to cope with the winner’s turn of foot but with no outstanding stayer emerging he could be a Cup horse….or is Alandi still in trainin? If so she’ll surely clean up in the long distance Group racesMay 31, 2010 at 09:30 #297725Alandi was sold to race in Hong Kong where Mr Medici, who was in training with Prendergast a couple of seasons back, won a Group 1 at the weekend beating no less than Viva Pataca.
