I’ve just being looking through a few of these to maybe try and eek a little value before the weights are published – especially with Bet365 NRNB offer.

Judging from his owners comments, HUNT BALL is a certainty in the Byrne Group Plate. The owner is talking about supplementing him for the Gold Cup – the trainer is trying to talks ense into him. He now has a mark of 142, and if he has any Gold Cup aspirations in the future, then he must go close. 10s generally, or 8s NRNB.

On the first day, the Festival Handicap intrigues me. In recently years, its been an unlucky one though as a losing bet on Bensalem testifies – as does a losing bet on Carole’s Legacy when losing to Alan King’s beast. This year though, QUANTITATIVEEASING will be carrying my money. I don’t care what weight he’ll be given (trends suggest anything ober 11st 2 can’t win), I’ll be backing him. The Cheltenham race he won usually provides an excellent pointer to the festival, and he has previous festival form, finishing placed behind Divers last year and in the Coral Cup in 2010.

Anyone have anything else in mind for the Handicaps?

I quite like The Package for the Festival Handicap. Obviously the time off would be a slight concern but if Pipey’s got him ready then the drop in rating could set him in good stead, and his previous run in this race off a higher mark shows he’s up to the task.

Also, after previously liking Astracad for the Grand Annual, I’ve had another look and found Silk Drum as a bit of a mad outsider at 40/1. Astracad probably is going to be going off slightly too high of a mark than is normal for the winner in this, and Silk Drum, although having a simply awful season so far, fits a lot of the trends for the race and could come good and run a big race at a nice price.

Just spotted it’s going at 66s in some places. I must be losing it!

Blunkett: You may wish to cover your HUnt Ball bet in the Byrne with a bet for him in his intended target race, the PLI HCap on Day One! This was always his target however there was a mix up with his rating and it was thought he would not be eligible, he is now, I believe running in this race so that’s the race I have opted for. :D

Gobbled up some 20s about baile anrai and tullamore dew for the festival handicap. NRNB

Tullamore placed two festivals in a row and ran well last time just missing out. Baile Anrai was holding his own ok in the reynoldstown before going down. His jumping is risky but off 133 he has to be in with a shout.

The pulteney i am all over ackertac to reverse with triolo.

Coral got a list of 8 some will go for other targets so will wait a while on these.

Waiting to see if Pentiffic gets in anywhere of 125. He ran a blinder jumping superbly on good ground against bless the wings last time and Williams has a good record in some handicap levels at the festival. Also like carrick boy of hers who is improving.

Annual – Like Astracad and de boitron a la zarks. Also like toubab but not sure if he is underpriced.

Another Venetia Williams horse who handles ground and been given a rest is rileyev, I’ll be waitning.

Hunt Ball would have 12st in the Novice according to the RP, I’m gonna hold fire for now.

SNAP TIE in the County looks interesting, has a vastly lower mark than its last appearance over hurdles. Would be carrying about 10st if all the top weights stay in. Only concern is the absence.

Batonnier looks nicely weighted in Coral Cup off 10-7. 12/1 NRNB B365 looks worth throwing a note or two at.

Given the fact he was Pricewise for the Neptune, 12/1 for him in the Coral Cup at 10-7 does look very generous. You’re not wrong Shack, could be worth a punt with it being NRNB.

Paul Nicholls’ inclusion of Ulck Du Lin in the Fred Winter looks interesting. He insists in his own words ‘it’s not a plot’, but he does have some decent form over in France, and he could prove to be well in off 130 and at 10-5. The moneys already piled in(20s into 11s in 48 hours). Well worth keeping an eye on.

Certainly won’t be backing anything just yet, but the ones that stand out at first glance are Harpsy Cord (in whatever he runs in), Jetson in the Coral, Bat Masterson in the Fred Winter and I have a sneaky feeling for Catch Me in the Pertemps. Fruity O’Rooney also looks well treated.

The Package is 2lb lower when he should have won 2 years ago. Yes, pocket talking.

Ulck into 11-1 would not be too much betting action. I suspect it is more bookies covering themselves. If there was heavy action it would have gone shorter by a long way in such an open event.

Has got half decent french form. i won’t touch him although i am wary.

I have backed Maljimar EW at 12/1 for the X Country

First have to fess up to having backed him probably at the last 4 festivals, so there is a bit of sentimentality, but trying ignore that still think there’s case to be made for him…

    • I still think he could have won if delivered later last year, so hopefully Reveley can hang on longer than Darryl Jacobs did
    • Won’t mind the ground (almost certain to be quick on the X Country)
    • A few lbs lower
    • Underrated trainer

    Renard 25/1 NRNB Plate.

Venetia trains, she’s a great record in this race. Nicely weighted well under 11st, french bred, has all the credentials for this race. Stats are stats, but first port of call always has to be an outsider in this race.
Having said that, i did get a few quid on Divers yesterday @ 12s NRNB and McCoy can hardly be a negative :).
