Drone. Rawnsley is superb but Hutton can be very muddled and a bit obsessive. Simon Tisdal is excellent though but Nick Cohen is juvenile and petty.
They should go paywall. People claim papers are “dead” but thats nonsense. I know a few people who have migrated to the times online (which is top class) simply because they’ve tired of the rubbish news outlets. I suspect there is a craving for good writing
March 2, 2021 at 20:03 #1526696Not the first time that someone has erroneously reacted to one of my observations as though it were aimed at them by quoting the first part of my post back, but last time it was a different username.
I remain of the view that there’s lots of needless posturing in this thread, and in the context of journalism it’s not a giant leap, or ‘assumption’, to point to those media sources which have a recent (and objectively proveable) track record of wilfully misleading their…audience.
March 2, 2021 at 20:27 #1526710Isn’t that something Trump said, Coney?

March 3, 2021 at 14:16 #1526908Looks like he’s joining the RP.
On the one hand, I’m pleased he’s got a job, on the other hand, I’m worried he’ll be hemmed in by the RP’s stance.

So don't run, just like the others always do
March 3, 2021 at 14:33 #1526913Glad Chris has been signed up but I hope he’s allowed the freedom to write what is needed and what he wants for the Post and his wings will not be clipped.
March 3, 2021 at 17:46 #1526949Can’t see Chris Cook putting up with clipped wings.
He’ll be poking people’s eyes out with those wings before long.Value Is EverythingMarch 5, 2021 at 09:34 #1527169That’s not how newspapers work.
Writers file their copy and have no control what happens to it thereafter.
The Editor and the senior Management and proprietor above the Editor call the shots.
Glad he’s found another job, but doubt we will see the same freedom of expression in the finished product we did when he was at The Guardian.
For all it’s failings The Guardian was never owned by Sheikh Mohammed, nor does The Guardian depend heavily on bookmaker and bloodstock advertising revenue.
It will be a different ballgame.

Chief, you’ve got its/it’s wrong twice on this thread. Typical RP journo mistake; as we discussed recently on here

Just think of ‘it’s’ as always meaning ‘it is’ and you’ll never make that mistake again

I’m now beginning to wonder if mad Ricky and even madder gamble were right. Maybe I did create the joined-up IanDavies!
I’ll just go and check on that

Cheers. Nathan, you are typical of someone who will take note of what people point out to you- like the of/have I put you right on recently. But you’ll still have a moan at them. Bad form!
My grammar is far from perfect, but I like to think I know the basics.

Coming from someone who constantly moans about the forum
but always comes back for more…

I’m just trying to help as I’m quite fond of this place that used to be a good sanctuary from the outside world.
People like yourself who aren’t very bright don’t understand that.
March 6, 2021 at 06:16 #1527463Tank,
As Nick Godfrey, the then (circa 1990) young Oxford University English graduate, subsequent Deputy Editor, and all-round top bloke, at the Racing Post, once said: “The English language is our servant, we are not its servant.”
“The language evolves – that’s why we don’t say ‘ye olde….’ any more – and text speak is actually permissible, if not in newspaper print but in every day life.”
I agreed with him.
Being snobbish/elitist about grammatical error – often brought about by auto correct in a casual environment where few double check what they have written before posting – ill behoves you, even in jest.
As long as we all understand each other, it’s job done.
So **** right off, sir!
I trust I spelt THAT correctly!

It's the "Millwall FC" of Point broadcasts: "No One Likes Us - We Don't Care"March 6, 2021 at 11:21 #1527523I’m sure our resident grammarian Tank knows this, but for the benefit of others:
‘the’ was never spelt or pronounced ‘ye’ in past times: it’s a false rendering of the Old English letter ‘thorn’ prounounced ‘th’ whose symbol was a bit y-like
March 6, 2021 at 12:57 #1527575It certainly benefitted me!
Thanks, Drone!
