THE FELLOW, who in 1994 became the first French-trained horse to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, has died.
The 23-year-old, trained through a glittering career by Francois Doumen, had twice been beaten a short head in the sport’s ultimate prize prior to his famous defeat of Jodami under Adam Kondrat.
As well as landing the Gold Cup, The Fellow also carried the colours of the Marquesa De Moratalla to victory in back-to-back runnings of the King George VI Chase and the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris. The Fellow spent his retirement at his owner’s St Albans stud farm, where he died after fracturing a leg while in his barn.

Smashing horse though and he was one of the horses that were on the scene when I first got into racing as a youngster.
September 3, 2008 at 20:47 #179213what memories of when he won the King George; I was sure he would win it that year but wouldn’t back a horse against my beloved Dessie….how well cared for he must have been throughout his retirement….condolences yet again to all concerned…
September 30, 2008 at 02:54 #182786I think The Fellow was a good chaser and if ever a horse deserved to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, it was him, especially after those two short-head defeats in successive years. Thank God he did so at the 4th attempt !
My condolences to his connections.
