Am I right in thinking that a most of the horses in the first 7 were ridden by claimers?

Good place money for Niceofyoutotellme but great training performance from Marcus Tregoning to bring the winner back again after winning 2 years ago

Thanks everyone, it’s nice when a plan works out.

Looking at the "big one" it seems that a good few of those fancied have high draws and the action may take place on that side.

Even though I like Cornrow as a prospect I can’t back him in a field this size at the odds. Coral only go 5/1 and I won’t take less than 16/1 in this melee.

Drawn right next door to the fav is stablemate Maverick Wave and he seems friendless in comparison. Buick has rejected him but it wouldn’t be the first time he’s got it wrong. A couple of small race wins saw the Elusive Quality colt go off fav for a four runner handicap at Newmarket, where he was run down late on and finished second.

On his next start he ran fourth, with two of today’s runners Bronze Angel and Velox in front of him. Maverick Wave was deemed to have potential that day, as he was a warm favourite at 13/8, so it seems odd that Velox is almost a third of the odds of the Gosden horse today. Maverick Wave tends to race prominently

and I just have a concern whether he is going to be used to set the race up for his more fancied stablemate. 25/1 is a big price for a horse rated just 1lb behind the fav and lining up in the stall next door with a similar profile.

Maverick Wave each-way 25/1 and a cheeky reverse Gosden forecast bet for the crack!

Quite happy with Tenor in 5th at 40/1. He was written off as a two star chance by Timeform, who, unsurprisingly, gave their five stars to the hot favourite Cornrow.

As I said, Maverick Wave usually makes the running or sits very prominent, so it’s a bit disappointing to see the race report read "Held up, never a factor" beside his name. Even more galling when you see that the horses I mentioned in his last race, Bronze Angel and Velox were a 1-2 (Dead-heat) today.

Much was made of Cornrow dropping back to 7f from a mile last time, and that was put forward as a reason for him not winning. It was assumed he would be suited by the 2f extra today but he didn’t look like he got home to me. Yet another example of a ridiculously priced horse from a big stable relieving punters of their cash.

Can’t complain and good to see Marcus Tregoning enjoy a bit of success as a Derby winning trainer who has had it pretty quiet in general these past few seasons.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.

    I believe you’re right…

    1st: Bronze Angel drawn 11 (5lb claimer)
    2nd: Velox drawn 28 (5lb claimer)
    3rd: Niceofyoutotellme drawn 14
    4th: Buskstay drawn 10
    5th: Tenor drawn 26 (5lb claimer)
    6th: Tigers Tale drawn 25 (3lb claimer)
    7th: Big Johnny D drawn 5 (5lb claimer)

5 of the 7 claimers riding were in the first 7.

    Good spot.

Well done Steve, Bronze Angel one that I follow as I’m a big fan of the sire Dark Angel. Did the forecast with Niceofyoutotellme as well thanks to the dead heat for second place. :D

Trip: amazed it was a dead heat, as they crossed the line Velox was 2nd, saw the slow mo and Velox looked clear 2nd, must be some photo bias at Newmarket :-) Niceofyoutotellme ran a cracker despite not getting away and not having the clearest of runs, well done and congrats :-)

I haven’t seen a replay but did Velox run straight? I’d read that, in his previous runs, he’d wandered about a bit.

G M Hopkins runs again tomorrow but is in to 2/1 from 3/1 already.

The form of the race he won has seen five losers but only the stragglers have run from that race thus far. He’s up 9lbs but should still have scope and he’s won on softer ground before. The only fly in the ointment might be how he handles his racing after some setbacks earlier in his career.

Thanks for the good crack. Time for me to move on. Be lucky.
