Well the card is out for the Brocklesby, the first race of the flat in britain.
I always love looking over the card to see what new sires have progeny entered in this, and its nice to see Antonius Pius, Avonbridge, Pastoral Pursuits and Whipper all have entered runners.
Have been waiting for Antonius Pius first crop coming for some time now so he is quite exciting however he only has a filly out in this (Benbanine) but will still have a little go anyway if she runs.
Mick Channon has spoken well of Archers Road but suspect he may be better on better ground (depending on what saturdays ground is). Interestingly enough the year running up to when Archers Road would have been bred, Titus Livius didnt have a bad year in 2yo 5f races, with quite a few winners including Titus Alone winning the Windsor Castle and Lady Livius winning the Newbury Supersprint, but both of those were on firmer conditions than is likely on saturday.
A bit of a lottery really but I quite like this race, anyone else have any fancies in it.
March 23, 2009 at 23:09 #218079Well, it’s a bit of a lottery unless you know of a horse that’s been working well on the gallops, but as I fancy Avonbridge to do really well as a sire, then Iver Bridge Lad would be my selection, if I was forced to have a bet.
March 24, 2009 at 02:05 #218110WGM (Bill) Turner usually has one tuned up for this (won 2 of last 3 renewals and also won back in 2002) so I’ll probably plump for Could It Be Magic. At least you know the horse will be fit FTO and is more than likely aimed at this as opposed to not knowing whether something will come on for the run or is using the race as a step up to future races.
March 24, 2009 at 04:30 #218127Only concern with Turners horse is that it may find this trip a bit sharp on pedigree, even at this stage in the calender.
If I was to make up a shortlist of those that have jockeys booked already, going on good-sft or so then I’d say.
Swilly Ferry
Koo and the gang
Iver Bridge Lad
Chicita Banana
And possibly Hearts Of Fire toowould expect there to be more jockeys confirmed later in the week

The Brocklesby is undoubtedly one of the worst betting propositions of the season unless, as Venusian says, you happen to be approaching it from an ‘alternative angle’.
At this stage only Duke Of Rainford and Eight Hours interest me.

Yeppers – his horses often end up in the finish of this race.

You would really need to be there on the day to have a look at some of these sorts. No bet for me
March 25, 2009 at 17:13 #218315Last I saw the ground on the straight course was given as on the fast side of good- the gd/soft was the round course.
March 25, 2009 at 18:14 #218326Not a race to be backing in? Someone better tell Harry Findlay as George Baker’s Chicita Banana is already being touted as a good thing
March 25, 2009 at 23:34 #218383Well if Carvs is right about the ground, the I would have to review the shortlist but in a conventional brocklesby on softish ground I would definitely have Chicita Banana in the shortlist, but not if the ground is gd-fm. Channon’s Archers Road would be a definite bet if it is gd-fm.

Unless one of the fillies wins narrowly against a colt and the colt would be rated higher conceding weight.

March 26, 2009 at 15:16 #218462Hi All
Last years Brochelsby winner was SALLYS DILEMA. It was ridden by Tolley Dean and i am mates with his brother. This year, Jack Dean, Tolleys brother will be riding COULD IT BE MAGIC for Bill Turner and Bill said it is better than last years winner at this stage. The only thing is it needs a low draw!
March 26, 2009 at 16:57 #218476Drawn 18 of 22
March 26, 2009 at 17:50 #218484Why does it need a low draw? Draw bias as such hardly exists at Doncaster these days, and if you’ve identified a pace bias already in that race, you are a better form student than me. Didn’t Sallys Dilemma race up the stand side anyway last year?
March 26, 2009 at 18:18 #218487All winter, every single NH winner has been on the far side so I just presumed that that is where the better ground is!
