I was at Lords last week for the county game and the picth was tedious. Nel and Jordan bowled with good control but there was nothing in it for them at all. Admittedly it was a blazing hot day

At Oval tomorrow. I suspect it will be the usual reasonably fast and quick scoring but bit in it for the spinners later on

Do you mind me asking how long you have been going to the Oval? There have been some great finishes to a series there (though I’m assuming you weren’t there in ’53!)

Ponting was top class today. England are going to have to work hard over the next few days. Monty has to go.

Jeremy – the Times? Hardly an authority on anything sport-related, is it?

That’d be in the eye of beholder, ultimately, but the thrust of the article is little different to that of Andrew’s post above. England, and Pietersen himself, both need him to convert more "will this do?" top scores in an innings into total-and-utter-put-match-beyond-doubt top scores in an innings, because he (almost) alone in the batting line-up has it within his gift to do so.

Having said all of that, the jammy sod will probably be given one over of twirling before they take the new ball this morning and bowl Ponting through the gate, so what do any of us know! 8)

    Newbie question here

What are the probable tactics of the Aussies in this test now – keep batting up to, say 600 or until lunchtime tomorrow, and then declare and hope to bowl England out?

They would love to but the ball is definitely moving now. Severe rain forecast for tomorrow.

What does this mean? I really am clueless BTW!

They are 417 for 4 now. Rain is coming Sat so they are unlikely to get another innings . If they can get 250/350 ahead of Englands total, they will be left to bowl England out for less than this total,on a rain affected pitch,to win the game.

Once again a brilliant atmosphere at the ground.

David, the phrase just means that the ball is veering off a straight line in some way, through spin, seam movement or swinging, thus making it harder to bat. Although Australia don’t seem to be finding it too difficult…

Just watch Mitchell Johnson on day one, and the ball that removed Prior, David, and you’ll understand the various acts to which ‘movement’ refers.

Whilst on the subject and from a relative newb in comparison to the real cricket mob, I can clearly remember Graham Gooch bowling what can best be described as a ‘loving’ pace in a test against ????? and got the ball to swing like a boomerang. I was amazed at the time and asked a friend why he doesn’t bowl more often, only to be told simply that ‘he wasn’t any good really’. :?

I know he could bat, but was he generally regarded as decent swing bowler, or even someone who possessed more ability to do so than most? :?

I’ve been wanting to put this to bed for ages.

G Boycott too was capable of generating swing on the few occasions he bowled his ‘military medium’, but line and length was the problem, and this is probably the reason he like Gooch and other part-timers "wasn’t any good really"

When bowling he also anticipated by some twenty years the dubious fashion of wearing a cap backwards :)

It has been said that spin, seam and swing are relatively easy to master; the tricky bit is doing so on the line-and-length intended

Quite impressed with Collingwood yesterday though, who would just about qualify as part-time

Just compared the two on wikipedia.

    Gooch, Test – 23 wickets at a average of 46.47. First class – 246 wickets at a average of 34.37. f/c best 7/14

    Collingwood, Test – 14 wickets at a average of 55.00. First class – 119 wickets at a average of 39.84. f/c best 5/52.

What I want to know is who did Gooch get the 7/14 against?

It was almost put to bed until the 7-14 figures emerged!

Thanks Drone, Gooch was obviously a jammy git on occasions!

I know English spinners are an "endangered species" and nobody’s expected to emulate Jim Laker, but Graeme Swann is just bland.

At least Emburey could extract some drift in his deliveries.

England in deep dooh-dah at 20-2 at tea. Can’t see them getting out of this one. Australia have been so superior in every aspect of the game, this just looks a cruel mismatch.

The surprising thing is that anyone would be surprised by the way the First Test has gone. England have been a distinctly mediocre outfit for a number of years now and Australia, though they are going through a rebuilding phase, showed themselves to be a tough and determined unit in going to South Africa and winning the series.

Australian cricketers, even when they are not as talented as their predecessors, are always tough. England batted like millionaires, apparently happy that this was a 400 pitch. Ponting knew it was a 600+ pitch and played accordingly.

Now we will see whether the English batsmen have the mental toughness to save the game.
